Dear Friends,

Welcome to the refreshingly green monsoonmagic!

The cover page of the July issue of Contacteulogises the rains that leave behind a sparklinglyclean environment. The waste and dirt that wehumans and living organisms have created iswashed away by the rains, and we now breathein fresh and healthy air. Rain has been describedas a link between heaven and earth, a symbioticrelation between all life and the naturalenvironment, that is a prerequisite for the realisation ofcosmic harmony. This issue celebrates the rains.

The focus of this issue is the ‘5S’ concept of TQM (TotalQuality Management). The '5S’ is a Japanese concept thathighlights the importance of Seiri – Organisation, Seiton –Neatness, Seiso – Cleaning, Sieketsu – Standardization, andShitsuke – Discipline in all walks of life, be it at theworkplace or at home.

We would like to add another ‘S’ to this, Save. Thisword has a wide application, i.e., save water, save trees, save nature, save resources, save the earth… and just abouteverything else that is needed to be saved for a securetomorrow.

Recently, there has been a lot of talk on ‘Global warming’.

Global Warming is the increase in the averagetemperature of the Earth’s surface in the recent decades, and its projected continuation.

In India, the Himalayan glaciers are melting at anaverage rate of 50 feet (15 m) per year, consistent with therapid warming recorded at Himalayan climate stations sincethe 1970s.

All over the world and in India, temperatures are rising. We have all witnessed this during the recent summers. Whyis this happening? Well, it’s due to global warming. Andglobal warming is here to stay because we have beenneglecting the earth. We are habituated to waking up tomistakes only when they grow out of proportion.

Nevertheless, it’s better late than never. I urge all ofyou to take a pledge to ‘save’. Save in little wayseverywhere. Save a drop of water, save a piece of paper, save a small paper clip... .If we learn to save today, we willundoubtedly make a lot of difference in saving wastage inthe organization, at home or in the world.

An earlier issue of Contact (Vol. VIII Issue XXXII July2006) had carried an article on ‘How the earth would be

in 2010’. All indications point towards this. If we do notsave now, we shall repent later… .

Let this message go down the line, to your colleagues, your kids, and every one else, and see the change foryourself. If you pass on the concern, the intention will turninto reality and we will all learn to save.

Let us give our kids a better and healthier future.

Yoga camp was one notable event with allhealth conscious Ipcaites attending theprogram. The participants devotedly practicedall asanas and pranayams that they were taught. All shared their enthusiastic feeling of how theyfelt by practicing and doing pranayams. Theyfelt as if they were actually repairing the wearand tear conditions of their body.

We appreciate the trouble taken by all theparticipants in reaching the venue early. Weare confident that the pain they have taken willbenefit them in every way, if they practise theyoga regularly.

The yoga trainer, Mr. Ashok Sharma isDGM-HR in our Corporate Office. He has aheavy travel schedule and hence is notavailable on all days. We could arrange theprogram this week since he was present in theoffice the whole week. The program wasscheduled (5 days) from 21st May to 25th

May'07.

Mr. Sharma is a yoga expert and conductedtraining in a very disciplined manner. Heexplained the concepts of all asanas andpranayaams. He also chanted and taught a fewshlokas which were repeated by allparticipants. His training was appreciated byall present and many were unaware of the factthat we have an experienced Yoga traineramong us.

All learners were requested to come on anempty stomach and after practising yoga in themorning, breakfast was served to them. Butonly after having one cup of Bottle Gourd andCarrot (Doodhi & Gajar) juice. Few participantsdisliked having it but for their health, all hadto compulsorily drink it. They were servedbreakfast after they had practised yoga. Butfirst, all of them had to drink a cupful of BottleGourd and Carrot (Doodhi & Gajar) juice andthough same disliked the idea, all were askedto drink the juice for the sake of their health.

Notes on yoga as asana and pranayamscollected and circulated were to all participants. We have received requests to continue theprogram. We assure all participants and thosewho have missed that we would repeat theprogram but only when you assure us that ‘Youtake good care of your health.’

What is angina?

Angina is the chest pain or discomfort that occurs whenthe heart doesn’t get as much blood and oxygen as itneeds. Angina is also called angina pectoris. “Pectoris” isLatin for “chest”.

What causes angina?

Coronary arteries are the blood vessels that supply bloodto the heart. Over time, they can get blocked from abuildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances. Thisbuildup is called plaque. If one or more arteries are partlyblocked, not enough blood can flow through, and onecan feel chest pain or discomfort.

Angina can occur due to other conditions that may affectthe way blood flows to the heart as well. Abnormal heartvalves, abnormal heart rhythms and anemia can also leadto angina.

Who are susceptible to angina?

Smokers, elderly people under stress, people with diabetesor hypertension or high cholesterol levels overweightpeople are susceptible to angina.

What are the symptoms of angina?

Here’s how a patient suffering from angina says it feels:

• Chest feels tight or heavy.

• Pressure, squeezing or burning in chest.

• Discomfort may spread to arm, back, neck, jaw, orstomach.

• Numbness or tingling in shoulders, arms or wrists.

• Feels short of breath (or hard to breathe).

• Indigestion or nausea.

What are the types of angina?

Commonly angina is of two types: Stable angina andunstable angina.

Stable angina is the most predictable and prevalent formof angina. Physical exertion is the most common triggeralthough emotional stress and exposure to extremetemperatures may also lead to anginal episodes. Angina

Medical

Medical Core Team

attacks are usually relieved by rest and/or takingmedication like nitroglycerin.

Unstable angina is unpredictable. Patients experiencesymptoms without an obvious trigger, often while theyare at rest. The discomfort may be more severe, prolonged(as long as 30 minutes) and different in character thanstable angina symptoms.

At what juncture might a patient get on attack of angina?

The patient may get angina when he/she.

• Climbs stairs or carries groceries.

• Feels angry or upset.

• Works in very hot or cold weather.

• Has emotional stress.

• Exercises.

What is the difference between angina and a heart attack?

Sometimes coronaryartery which suppliesblood to the heartgets completelyblocked by plaque orblood clots. Whenthis occurs, bloodflow to that part of theheart stops. Withoutblood, the cells of theaffected heart musclewill get permanentlydamaged; this is whathappens during aheart attack.

The signs of a heart attack are similar to those of angina, with 3 main differences in heart attack:

• The pain is more severe.

• The pain usually lasts longer.

• Medication or rest does not relieve the pain.

If not treated, angina could lead to heart attack.

How does a doctor diagnose angina?

To help determine thecause of chest pain anddiscomfort, the doctorwill first take a medicalhistory and carry out aphysical examination. The history of pain onexertion, which isrelieved by rest stronglysuggests angina. Todetermine if the patienthas angina, the doctormay carry out severaltests. An electrocard-iogram is one of thecommonest tests to

diagnose angina. A stress electrocardiogram may alsobe done. During this test the patient is asked to exerciseon a treadmill or a bicycle while his/herelectrocardiogram is taken. Changes in theelectrocardiogram pattern help the doctor to determineif the patient has coronary artery disease.

An echocardiogram is another test that measures thestructure and function of the heart. The doctor analyzesthe image of the heart function on a screen.

If the initial tests show that there may be blockage inthe blood vessels of the heart, the doctor mayrecommend angiography. During angiography, the doctorinserts a thin tube, called a catheter, into an artery inthe groin or arm. The catheter is guided to the heart, and dye is injected into the coronary arteries. X-rayimages are then taken which can show blocked heartarteries.

Medical

What are the precautions to be taken by a patientsuffering from angina?

A few simple steps can help a patient suffering from anginafeel more comfortable every day:

• Stop smoking, and avoid other people’s tobacco smoke.

• Be physically active.

• Lose weight, if overweight.

• Check the blood sugar. If it is high, keep it under control.

• Eat healthy meals low in saturated fat, cholesterol andsalt.

• Control high blood pressure and blood cholesterollevels.

• Avoid strenuous activities.

• Learn to relax and manage stress.

What are the treatment options for angina?

The first line of treatment for patients is drugs that helpincrease the supply of oxygen to the oxygen-deprivedheart muscle by dilating coronary vessels or decreasingthe demand for oxygen.

Nitroglycerin can prevent or stop angina by causingblood vessels to relax. This increases blood flow to theheart and reduces the amount of work the heart needsto do. Other drugs decrease the blood pressure and heartrate, thus decreasing the demand for oxygen. Examplesof these are beta blockers, calcium channel blockers.Other drugs like lipid lowering drugs, antiplatelet agents, antioxidants are also used.

Surgical options for angina include angioplasty andcoronary stent placements, as well as coronary arterybypass grafting (CABG).

Ipca being one of the most valued clients of TheOriental Insurance Co. Ltd., Mr.A.K.Jain – ExecutiveDirector was invited as Chief Guest to the AnnualConference of Divisional and Regional in charges. Theprogram was held on 29th June, '07 at Khanvel Resorts,Silvassa.

Mr.A.K.Jain was welcomed to the meet, with a bouquet byMr.G.R.Saool, Sr. Divisional Manager of the insurancecompany. There after, Mr.Jain was honored with a mementoby the Regional In charges of the insurance companyMr.V.K.Bhatia and Mr.Ish Kumar. Finally Head RegionalOffice of The Oriental Insurance Co. Ltd., Mr.A.J.Kulthe,requested Mr.Jain to start the meet with lighting the lampand deliver the key note on the “CUSTOMER NEEDS FROMTHE PRESENT INSURANCE INDUSTRY”

Mr.Jain fascinated the gathering of more than 50 seniorinsurance personnel with his well etched out speechbringing to a win-win situation. Mr. Jain said that thepartnership and relation between a client and an insurerhad to be emphasized upon with the need to foster theInsurance Company to act as a shock absorber. He furthersaid that the customer should have faith to place hisproperty at risk with the Insurance Company to getabsorption at the time of any major catastrophic loss.

According to Mr. Jain, the need of the hour was Olympicmotto “Faster, Higher and Stronger” and the fastest one is thewinner in the changing environment. Gone are the days of“Bigger fish eating the smaller one”. You need to perform atspeed better than others. While pointing out de-tariff andprivatization of insurance, he said, if one check the historyof evolution, one would observe that after an initial inventionof a particular thing, the improvisations have come at atremendous speed, may it be a sector of medical science, telecommunication, electronics or insurance.

Mr. Jain said, its’ the “age of packaging”, and hence oneneed to, not only have a better product but also need topresent it, to the customer in an attractive package. Hesaid, one should develop specialization, instead of depend

on only generics. He admired the insurance company fortheir wonderful risk analysis and valuable suggestions ofvarious factory units of Ipca. On this he further said, extending this expertise based various inspections ofpharmaceutical companies, insurance company candevelop a product on “Risk Analysis” which would beuseful to the entire Pharmaceutical Industry.Correspondingly “Risk Analysis” products can also be madeeach and every industry.

He advised to look beyond than Traditional Insuranceswhere risk coverage such as Fire, Marine, Burglary etc.The need of the hour is to focus more on Personal lines ofinsurance like Householders, Shopkeepers, PA/GPA/JPA,Nagrik Suraksha, Mediclaim and Universal HealthInsurance. With the GDP (Gross Domestic Production) andinflation rate on the high, minimal per product changingto 25% was to be appreciated and those workers and strivershad to be rewarded / commended with the need of thesystem and reward / punishment being introduced andstressed upon. India is producing so many billionaireshence there is also a need to have special risk coverage forthese strata of society.

Mr. Jain felt, there is a strong perception that, insurance isrequired only for middle or older age people. He opinedthat, this is to be eroded indeed by interdiction of insuranceas protector and benefactor educational topic at schoollevel to understand its need from the beginning of thecareer. He said, knowledge has to be managed, inculcatedand person should learn to grow and adapt with thechanging times faster to feel imbibed upon adaptability.

All participants felt that, Mr. Jain drove home the messagequite loud and clear with his vision of a better future andto achieve high goals in the short span of time he had. They also expressed heart felt gratitude and sincere thanksfor the views shared with them.

This quote is proved rightby Mr. Shailendra Rao whois working in QualityAssurance Department since 2004. He started hiscareer with Ipca in 2004 and in the same year whenour facility faced the USFDA inspection, hecontributed a lot in this success under the guidanceof Mr. S. K. Darh. At that time he impressed everyoneincluding Mr. J. L. Nagori, who rewarded him forhis contribution during the audit and suggested toabsorb him as an Ipca employee.

“When man takes something upon himself hecan manage more than one would think”.

He had joined the organization as a RecordKeeper involved in all the QA functions andcontinued his study also. He passed the graduation(B. Sc.) examination in 2005 and focused on highereducation and we are pleased to announce that thisyear he got his Master’s degree (M. Sc.– OrganicChemistry) with good marks.

World Water FactsIn the US and many other places,

you are almost certainly paying more forbottled water than for gasoline.

A Canadian study notes that a one-litrebrand-name bottle of flat water costs about$1.50. That’s about 3,000 times moreexpensive than an equal amount ofmunicipal tap water.

70% of the earth’s surface is covered withwater.

3/10th of 1% of all the world’s water isusable by humans.

17% of the world’s population lack accessto clean drinking water. This has improvedfrom 22% in 1990.

About 1 billion people lack access to safeclean drinking water.

The UN Children’s Fund reports that over 1.2 billionpeople who were without access to safe water in 1990now have it.

37% of the world’s population lack access to water forbasic hygiene.

Households without plumbing spend on average 90minutes a day hauling water for family needs.

Women, usually responsible for hauling water whenplumbing is absent, on average carry 45 pounds of waterat a time.

4,700 died on average every day in 2005 - mostlychildren under 5 - due to lack of clean potable water.

Every 8 seconds a child dies from a water-borne disease.

Global sales of bottled water reached$100 billion in 2005.

The cost to provide clean drinking waterto half the 1.1 billion who need it is between$10 and $30 billion a year.

Massive water bottling is a form of defacto privatization.

Water shortages near water bottling plantshave been reported all over, includingWisconsin, New Hampshire, Florida andTexas.

Countries that have made decisions to notpermit the privatization of water includeUruguay, Malaysia and India.

The NRDC tested 103 bottles of water andfound over 25% were simply tap water-Several tested failedthe bacteria test.

Many labled “natural” or “pure” had been run throughbasic filters that removed bad taste and odors but not othercontaminants.

1.5 million barrels of crude oil are used annually toproduce the plastic used to bottle water.

Bottled water is hauled long distances for distribution, burning massive quantities of fuel.

90% of the cost of a bottle of water is for label, cap andbottle.

Water is the lifeblood of earth.

Time I have heard is always on the move,Some time it seems it has wings,And just flies through. Some time it has a pace of a snail,And seems to crawl. Some time ‘time’ seems to be having a mind of its own,Gliding and surfing just like the waves,Not knowing what rhythm to follow. Some time ‘time’ feels like a never ending tunnelCreating a sense of timelessness. Some time ‘time’ seems to be in a hurry,Just rushing past, as a ferocious tornado. How I get out of breath trying to keep up with it.How bored I get waiting for it to pass. How confused I am about its instability.‘Time’ to me seems to be a birth at times,At times it seems to be the end of life. How do I measure it?How can I give an account for it?What a waste of time, what a futile effort.Does any one actually know what time is?When was its beginning and when would it end.

Time

Parents often go through hardships in life in order to bring up theirchildren well. They teach their children values, care for them, takecare of them when they fall ill... but once the children grow up, theyoften separate from their parents in their quest for a 'better' life or'greener pastures'. Loneliness surrounds aged parents since theirgrown up children are no longer close to them. In today’s competitiveworld, where all of us are constantly chasing money to live in style,we hardly get any time to look back and care for our parents.

Experience has taught us the essence of life but in the true sense ifwe ponder on these questions; ‘What have I done for my parents’,‘How are they’, ‘Do I spend quality time with them’, ‘Am I takingthem out’. Most of the questions are unanswered.

Many parents out there are spending their grey days unaided, unattended and there is a lot of loneliness in their life. In their youth, they were busy taking care of their little ones and now they are spending their lifein isolation.

What we have done today, will be understood and learnt by our kids tomorrow. The state of a parent today, will be our state tomorrow. We need to wake up andgive due respect, importance and love to our parents which they rightfully deserve. Please do not take this as a lecture or an article written just to fill some space inthis magazine, this is a tiny drop in the vast ocean of good advice: ‘Care for ourFamily and family includes our aged parents’.

If this has touched your heart, do something different for your parents soon, let them know you care for them. Because, every parent would feel, ‘ I have donemy duty…let us see our faith.’

Did you knowINFRASTRUTURE

The next time you spot a flyover, airport or even a power plant under

construction, take a deep breath. After all you’re staring at a small part of a

multi-billion dollar industry. The Approach Paper for the eleventh 5 Year Plan

has proposed an investment of USD 320 billion (Rs. 14.5 lakh crores) in the

next 5 years in infrastructure. Much of the credit goes to the successive

governments, which have been highly instrumental in encouraging this

infrastructural boom. The public private partnership structure is now firmly in

place and will attract large players, both locally and globally in contracting and

development stage. Moreover, rather than evolving agreements on a project

basis, the government has declared to create standardized frameworks. Here

are a few fast facts on India’s growing infrastructure and the possible

opportunities to grow with it.

AVIATION POWER

Mumbai and Delhi airports have already been handed over to private players

• Green field airports of Bangalore and Hyderabad airports are already under

development by private players • Kolkata and Chennai will also be developed

crores lot size.

POWER

building capacity, Ultra Mega Projects (UMPPs) are being planned • There is

a plan to increase nuclear power capacity from 3900 MW currently to 10,000

MW by end of the 11th plan and 20,000 MW by 2020.

OIL AND GAS

The demand for natural gas is expected to be pegged around 332 MMSCMD

by 2025 • This move will lead to investments of INR 2.3 lakh crores till FY12E

My girlfriend called me as she was drivingto an appointment. She arrived, and Icould tell from her voice that she wasgetting frustrated. Finally she said, “I knowI had my cell phone with me. And now Ican’t find it!”

I replied, “Aren’t you talking on it!?”

There was a solid period of stunnedsilence as the reality of the situation sankin - followed by, “You are NOT going totell anybody about this!”

My friend, an ex-Marine Aviator wantedto show off his new twin-engine plane. Iwas riding along as he put it through itspaces. Suddenly, we were caught in aviolent thunderstorm, with lightningcrashing all around us.

Next, we lost the radio and most of theinstruments.

As we were being tossed around in thesky, George said, “Uh-oh!” Fearing theworst, I asked, “What’s wrong now?”

George replied, “I got the hiccups. Dosomething to scare me.”
