What are

Development ChargesDevelopment charges are fees collected by Municipalities, under authority of the Development Charges Act of 1997, to offset capital costs incurred to support growth related infrastructure.

The charges are applicable to all lands in the City of Cambridge except lands owned by and used for the purposes of a Municipality, School Board, hospital and farm related structures.

Generally development charges for the City, Region and School Boards must be paid to the City of Cambridge at the issuance of the building permit.

Notes:1. Non-residential total is approximate due to metric conversion.

2. City of Cambridge development charges are indexed on December 1st of every year.

3. Development charges may be subject to interest (Prime + 2%) from the date a Site Plan Applicationor Zoning By-law Amendment application is made to the issuance of a building permit

4. Industrial buildings as per the Waterloo Region’s DC By law 19-037, may be eligible for 60% discountunder the non-residential rate category.

5. Educational development charges came into effect June 1, 2016 and are scheduled to be indexedJune 1, 2021.

6. City land sales after January 1, 2000, have City development charges included in the purchase price.

7. The Region and School Boards do not have a rate for Special Care/Special Dwelling Units and will becharged in accordance with their respective By-laws

RedevelopmentAllowances and CreditsThe bylaw provides for redevelopment allowances where development replaces a pre-existing development.

The by law also provides for:

1. Credits where an owner providesservices in lieu of payment or wheredevelopment is on private well orsanitary service.

2. Credits for cleanup of contaminatedsites.

3. Heritage designated buildings.
