Welcome Ceremony for Indian students at University of Toronto

Book Launch of Mr. Shiv Khera by Consul General

Consul General Mr. Dinesh Bhatia launched Mr. Shiv Khera's new book 'You Can Achieve More' at an event organised by Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce and supported by Sigma Group. Consul General addressed the gathering and congratulated Mr. Shiv Khera for his latest book. The event was also attended by other dignitaries like Mr. Deepak Anand, MPP (Mississauga—Malton) and Mr. Andy Jasuja, Founder & Chairman, Sigma Group. Shiv Khera is an Indian author of self-help books and an activist. In 1998, Khera published his first book You Can Win (Jeet Aapki in Hindi), which focused on achieving success through personal growth and a positive attitude.

In the first ever program of its kind, the Consulate General of India, Toronto in association with University of Toronto (UofT) organised a Welcome Ceremony at the historic Hart House on 19 September 2018 for welcoming international students from India at the beginning of academic calendar year 2018-19. It was weaved into the orientation program of the University. The objective of the event was to establish a connect with the students when they arrive in Canada and make them understand the cultural, legal and several other differences between India and Canada in order to help them seamlessly settle in the foreign land. The concept of the event was proposed by the Consul General in his meeting with Mr. Ted Sargent, Vice President, International Relations, University of Toronto in the first week of January 2018. The idea was welcomed by the University and after several rounds of discussion, Hart House was selected as the venue for the Ceremony. The event was supported by Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) and SBI Canada. The Ceremony witnessed an attendance of around 125 students, comprising nearly 50% of the new Indian international students from the three campuses of UofT, namely, St. George, Mississauga and Scarborough. A special programme was curated for the students which included Welcome addresses by UofT, ICCC, SBI Canada and a PowerPoint presentation by the Consul General. Consul General Mr. Dinesh Bhatia adopted an engaging approach for his address and began with getting down the stage and interacting with the students amidst them. He engaged with the students through interesting ways like asking them about their home towns in India and then laying emphasis on the most important fact of being an 'Indian', which will always remain with them, no matter which country they live in. He delivered an interesting PowerPoint presentation to the students which informed them about Canada, its legal system, presence of strong Indian community in Canada, culture and weather of the country, important do's like registering on the MADAD portal of Government of India and don'ts like not being on the wrong side of the law, how to deal with stressful situations, what to do in emergency situations and introducing all the services of the Consulate General, which the students could make use of. Emphasizing the mantra given by EAM that Indian Missions are home away from home, he concluded telling the students that the Consulate is just like their second home and they should feel free to contact the officials in any sort of emergency situation. His address and presentation, followed by a Q&A session, carried the young students along and engaged them effectively. It gave the students a platform to interact directly with the Consul General and clarify their doubts about moving into Canada.
