CONSTRUCTION PROJECT STATUS REPORT Main Library Renovation

160 McCormick Road Construction Trailer address is 110 Newcomb Road

CURRENT STATUS:

• Package 1 (Demo, Site, Abate) January 23, 2020 • Main Library closed for 2.5+ years March 18, 2020 • Full construction activities start June 8, 2020 • Library opens Spring Semester 2023 • Construction complete now 18% • Active Construction Alerts none

CURRENT ACTIVITIES:

• Abatement complete except for unforeseen conditions • Courtyard bracing in progress • Utility (CW, Dom Water) work in footprint of new addition • Mass demo of historic building done, selective demo start • Mass demo of old stacks will restart as soon as bracing is done • Window refurbishment on East façade ongoing • Soil nailing (shoring) in south areaway • Continue new shear wall placement under Memorial Hall • Refinish stucco columns, precast coping and balusters • Refinish wood shelving in Reference Room • Install protection in historic rooms. • Remove historic lighting for protection and refurbishment.

FUTURE ACTIVITIES:

• Underpinning of the historic building in order to excavate the foundation of the new addition • Scaffold south side for exterior restoration and refurbish historic windows • Demo Old Stacks in January

PHOTOS:

The photo on the left shows the new shear wall under the former Preservation Lab. It runs in an east west direction. It spans a shorter distance as it goes up through the building, the extent of the wall in Level 3 is marked on the floor in Memorial Hall. On Level 4 the shear wall is only on the east and west flanks to preserve the open volume of Memorial Hall.

Steel beams “flying’ over Old Stacks in order to brace the courtyards in preparation for tearing down the Old Stacks. Old Stacks will be demolished in January.

Exterior restoration includes stripping windows, stucco columns, repointing, power washing and repainting.
