At Colchester Institute we aim to provide all students with a high quality industry related learning experience.

The College is very proud of its well established partnership with the University of Essex. The partnership means that while our students enjoy the highly vocational relevance of our programmes, many will also emerge with a qualification, in most cases a degree, awarded by the University of Essex. We also offer Edexcel HNC and HND programmes in a range of areas.

There are few colleges that offer students fine dining, the chance to have their hair done and nails pampered, browse the on-site art gallery and see some fantastic music concerts all on one campus. The Colne Bistro and Balkerne Restaurant, our fantastic award winning restaurants, are open five days a week and offer delicious, five star meals. We also have three campus refectories and a Starbucks.

The College provides a free gym and students on an Essex degree programme are also entitled to student rate membership of the University of Essex Sports Centre for recreational use. For those interested in art, the Hay Gallery at Colchester Institute and The Minories, located in the town centre, both display work by students and visiting artists. The Swinburne Hall hosts an exciting programme of live professional and student performances throughout the year.

Colchester Institute is set within Britain’s oldest recorded town, a town that exudes history, modern culture and creativity. The thriving university town boasts a population of 160,000 and demonstrates a dynamic and exciting urban lifestyle. Colchester combines tranquillity and peace with the bustle and animation that goes with contemporary living. Studying at Colchester Institute means being only a ten minute walk away from the town centre. The town offers an abundance of shopping facilities, bars, clubs and restaurants.

Colchester Institute offers higher education programmes in:

• Art and Design • Business and Management • Computing • Construction • Counselling, Health and Sport • Early Years and Education • Engineering • Hospitality • Music and Performing Arts

1. TeachingAll courses are delivered by tutors with strong backgrounds in industry and business; many continue to practise in their vocational field. Their professional expertise and academic knowledge is valued by our students. Our students benefit from studying in smaller classes, regular formal and informal feedback on progress, the level of support, and the accessibility of their tutors. Expert speakers are frequently invited to share their specialist knowledge.

2. FacilitiesStudents benefit from an excellent range of specialist resources and facilities, including dance and drama studios, a Cisco networking suite and programming laboratory, onsite and town centre based art galleries and studio space, a well equipped library and resource centre. The brand new Higher Education Centre includes quiet and group study spaces, together with a common room.

Page 7: Construction

Our construction courses provide excellent opportunities to gain a qualification and skills within a challenging and rewarding industry. There are a number of career paths and many job prospects both locally and nationally.

The industry is fast moving. Construction methods, techniques and technologies develop rapidly and legislation is always changing, this is reflected in our course delivery.

Construction covers public and private housing, public buildings such as hospitals and schools, commercial and industrial buildings, and infrastructure such as roads, bridges and power plants. The industry repairs, maintains and refurbishes existing buildings and installs services such as power and ventilation in new and existing buildings.

Construction is project based and good teamwork, forward planning and organisational skills are essential. Work involves collaboration with many specialists across the sector, together with clients and the general public. Most construction workers enjoy the variety the sector offers and the satisfaction of being able to see the finished product of their work.

Our Honours Degrees are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). The CIOB accreditation officially recognises our BSc (Hons) Construction Management course as an educational programme that promotes excellence in the built environment.

CIOB accreditation is an official confirmation that the programme contains the required learning outcomes to meet CIOB membership criteria and educational standards.

Getting to Know...

So what made you come to Colchester Institute and teach? I love construction, but I also like helping people learn and develop their knowledge and skills. Moving from site to classroom was an easy move for me to make and I enjoy my role as lecturer immensely. The centre has a very relaxed and informal atmosphere, where the small class sizes mean that I get to know the students really well. I also enjoy working with my fellow lecturers, as we all have something diff erent to off er our degree students. As a tutor what do you look for in potential students? Aside from the entry requirements to qualify for the

course, it’s always good to see enthusiasm and interest for the subject. Many of our students are part-time and already working in construction. Former and current students work as architectural technologists, contracts managers, site managers, building surveyors and quantity surveyors, and by using their experiences we can keep the course relevant as well as generate some very interesting class discussions.

So what made you come to Colchester So what made you come to Colchester So what made you come to Colchester So what made you come to Colchester So what made you come to Colchester So what made you come to Colchester So what made you come to Colchester So what made you come to Colchester Institute and teach?

Our

Sta

ff Name: Richard Brett Job: Lecturer in Professional and Technician Studies

Your background in historic building refurbishment clearly shows how varied construction work can be. That’s right, the construction industry brings together many diff erent people from all walks of life with wide ranging skills. It’s an enormous industry that suits those with artistic fl air and others with organisational or numerical talents. For instance, I have a BA (Hons) in History and am currently working towards an MSc in Building Construction. It has been great to be able to combine my love of history with a very practical industry to help preserve the past.

sponsorship to study at Colchester

Institute, are you glad to have come here?

I’m very happy with my employer’s decision to send me

to Colchester Institute. The company has been sending

employees here for the last fi ve years - a credit to the

teaching and support provided. Friends undertaking the

same course at other local colleges give me the impression

that this is the best delivered curriculum in the area.

Does the course allow the necessary work

experience on a construction site?

Work experience is a vital part of achieving maximum benefi t

from this course. Although I have been working in the

industry throughout my time at College, all full-time students

receive regular site contact, endorsed by the Centre for

Construction. Two of the course modules are purely based

around site based learning experiences, which is great!

You appear very driven and determined.

Do you have a long term career plan after

you graduate?

Despite the eff ect of the economic downturn on the

industry, opportunities are good within my organisation and

others. Successful completion of my degree will hopefully

result in promotion from my current position to Site Manager

and, with ongoing CPD, CIOB membership and on-site

learning, onward to Project Management and beyond.

Name: MichealCourse: BSc (Hons) in Construction Management (Site Management)

You won a Chartered Institute for Building (CIOB) Queen Elizabeth II scholarship in 2012. Congratulations! Thanks! I was nominated by one of my lecturers in recognition of my work. It was a real privilege to be nominated and even more so to win. CIOB said I had shown enormous potential to succeed in the construction industry, which was great to hear. It goes to show, that hard work is rewarded and it’s worth going that extra mile.

Fees

Major Government reforms to student finance commenced in 2012-2013 resulting in universities and colleges being able to charge variable fees. Universities and colleges that want to charge more than the basic fee (level not yet set for 2014-2015) must provide additional support to promote access to disadvantaged students. At the time of printing, Colchester Institute had not set course fees and support levels for 2014-2015. Once we have done so, we will update the fees pages on our website. We therefore recommend you consult our website for this information before you submit your UCAS application for entry to study in autumn 2013. These changes apply to UK and EU students wishing to study higher education in England.

Student Loans and Grants

How much money will I need and how do I get it?

Budgeting for student life is a tricky thing. The key is to be aware of the student loans and grants that are available to you, and to make sure you apply for them in good time. These can include Tuition Fee Loans, Maintenance Loans and Grants, and Disabled Students Allowance.

For more information please visit the Student Finance website at www.gov.uk/studentfinance, or call 0845 300 5090. For full-time courses, you apply for student finance from the January before you start your studies. You don’t need to wait until your UCAS offers have been made. For part-time courses, applications open in August.

Is there any other money I can get?

As well as student loans and grants, some students may be eligible for financial support through Access to Learning Funds which provides discretionary support to certain categories of student.

If you think your financial circumstances might prevent you from attending a full-time or part-time higher education course, our Student Finance team offers information on all aspects of student finance, including the application procedures.
