Delegated powers
These are powers that belong only to the federal government
Reserved powers
These are powers that belong only to the states
Concurrent powers
These are powers that are shared by both the federal and state governments
Legislative, Executive & Judicial
What are the three branches of the United States government?
Legislative Branch
This is the branch that makes the laws, as well as confirms presidential
appointments, approves treaties, grants money, and declares war
House of Representatives
Members of this Congressional house must be 25 years old and have been a
US citizen for at least 7 years
Senate
Members of this Congressional house must be at least 30 years old and have
been a US citizen for 9 years
Executive Branch
Members of this branch enforce the law, as well as proposing laws, commanding the armed forces,
appointing officials, conducting foreign policy and making treaties
President (or Vice President)
In order to run for this office, candidates must be a natural-born US citizen and
be at least 35 years old
Cabinet
This group is made up of the heads of each executive department, called secretaries (ex: Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, Secretary of
Education, Secretary of the Treasury, etc.). There are no specific
requirements to be appointed to these offices.
Judicial Branch
Members of this branch interpret the laws and the Constitution, while also
reviewing lower-court decisions
District courts
These courts make up the lower level of the judicial system - there are 94 of
them throughout the country
Courts of Appeals
These courts make up the middle level of the judicial system - there are 13 of them in the country and they decide if cases tried in lower courts were tried
appropriately.
Supreme Court
This is the highest court in the land - there is only one and there are 9
justices who sit on it

Members of this group have no requirements or term limits

This covers the freedom of religion, speech, press, the right to assembly and petition
Amendment II
This covers the right to bear arms
Amendment III
This covers the protection against quartering soldiers
Amendment IV
This protects citizens against unreasonable searches & seizures
Amendment V
This protects the rights of the accused--protection against double jeopardy, the right to not testify against themselves, the right to due process, and to be compensated if the gov’t takes property due to eminent domain
Amendment VI
This covers the right to a speedy & public trial, a trial by jury, the right to know the charges against them, the right to an attorney, and the right to obtain witnesses.
Amendment VII
This covers the right to a trial by jury in civil cases where the value exceeds $20
Amendment VIII
This covers the protection from excessive bail and cruel or unusual punishment
Amendment IX
This states that rights not listed belong to the people
Amendment X
This states that rights not prohibited to the states or delegated to the federal government belong to the states and the people
Ways to become a citizen
1. Born in the United States
2. Born to a parent who is a US Citizen
3. Naturalization (18 years old, 5 years resident, know English & US history & gov’t)
