Constellation Brands Napa Valley, California Fergus Nancarrow Summer 2019 Introduction: Constellation Brands Originally founded as Canandaigua Industries Company in the Finger Lakes Region of New York in 1945. Some brands owned by Constellation Brands include: Robert Mondavi, Kim Crawford, The Prisoner & Meiomi in wine, Corona & Modelo in beer, Svedka & High West in spirits, and Canopy Growth in cannabis. To Kalon & Mt. Veeder Vineyards The To Kalon Vineyard was originally planted in 1881 by H.W. Crabb. This 470 acre vineyard is located in the Oakville AVA of Napa Valley. To Kalon was purchased by Robert Mondavi in 1966, and has established itself as one of California’s most recognizable vineyards. Varietals planted include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon. Wineries using To Kalon grapes include: Robert Mondavi, Schrader, To Kalon Vineyard Co, Opus One & The Prisoner. The Mt. Veeder Vineyard is a 50 acre vineyard in the Mt. Veeder AVA of Napa Valley. This vineyard is also planted to traditional Bordeaux varietals, which are used in the Mt. Veeder Winery brand. Internship Responsibilities: Crop Estimation Cluster counts, cluster weights, berry counts & berry weights. Leaf Water Potentials (LWPs) Used a pressure chamber to determine vine water holding capacity & stress. Pest/Disease Scouting Scouting for Powdery Mildew. Argentinean ant traps (to indicate presence of Vine Mealybug). Inspecting new vines for Vine Mealybug. Setting out & collecting Vine & Grape Mealybug traps. Vine Tissue & Fruit Sampling Collecting leaf blades & petioles to be tested for macro/micro nutrients. Collected fruit samples to further understand a potassium deficiency in a part of the ranch. New Irrigation Project Worked with new irrigation technology to figure out varying vigor in a particular vineyard block. New vineyard development at To Kalon Vineyard.
