January is the month of renewal; it is an oppor-tunity to reflect upon our lives, to explore our

dreams and to create plans to achieve our goals. In this edition, Dr. Rebecca Bustamante shares with us a topic which I am sure will leave a mark on your life to begin 2015, the importance of “Mindfulness in Renewal.” It is necessary to focus and avoid distraction in order to be present in the moment in our daily activities and interactions. This is a chance to make small changes to improve our quality of life.

In order to make changes one should take a glance at their life in retrospect. An example of this was what María Baños Jordan, President and founder of the Texas Familias Council and one of our community leaders, has experienced recently. María exclusively shares with ConnexionW readers her recent travel to the “Holly Land.” She affirms that “Our Christian roots are born of the same Jewish tree that flourishes across the desert.” Here she is referring to the amazing olive tree, which can reach 2,000 years old, produces olive oil and can continue to grow over and over again after being burned. The olive tree is also recognized as an ancient symbol of peace. Peace continues to be a matter of concern, as well as the goal of the world.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the vision of the founders of The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council (WWAC), who recently celebrated a decade of promoting the arts in this wonderful community. Congratulations!

Enero es un mes para renacer. Es tiempo para reflexionar sobre nuestra vida, hablar de nuestros

sueños y crear estrategias para lograrlos. La Doctora Rebecca Bustamante nos comparte en esta edición un tema del cual estoy segura marcará su vida en el inicio de este 2015, la importancia de prestar “Atención plena a la hora de renovarse”. Evitando factores de distracción podemos lograr la concentración necesa-ria para estar verdaderamente presentes en cada una de nuestras actividades diarias. Una invitación a reali-zar pequeños cambios que mejoran la calidad de vida.

Toda renovación implica una retrospección, un mirar hacia atrás. Precisamente eso fue lo que vivió una de las líderes del área, María Baños Jordán, Presidenta y Funda-dora de la organización Texas Familias Council, quien comparte en exclusiva a los lectores de ConnexionW su reciente viaje a la llamada “Tierra Santa”. “Nuestras raíces cristianas nacieron del mismo árbol judío que florece sobre el desierto”, afirma ella. Aquí hace referencia al increíble árbol de olivo que puede alcanzar a vivir 2.000 años, producir aceite, reverdecer después de haber ardido y es el símbolo milenario de la paz. La paz, que sigue siendo motivo de preocupación mundial.

Around spring time, 12th grade students arereceiving letters of acceptance from different

universities and will be confronted with making a decision that can affect them for the rest of their lives. Pamphlets, books and postcards keep arriving, contin-uously trying to convince the young man or woman to select a particular school. But, what must be taken into consideration? One of the most important steps to take during this complex time is a visit to the University. Here is a list of things to accomplish before, during and after the visit.

1.- When? - Visit when students are actively attending the University so that you can see the flow and diversity of the student body. Currently, many univer-sities offer classes throughout the year, so the month or week of the visit does not matter, unless the climate of the city is very cold or very hot, and the students should visit during those extreme climate conditions as they will be facing them on a daily basis.

2.- How to plan? - As obvious as it may sound, make a list of universities the student wants to visit and plan an itinerary for their visit. Then plan the destinations, whether calculating car travel, air travel, travel time from one point to another and time for the actual visit to the university. Also, make a list of questions and topics that the student is interested in, for example, what do students do for the football games?

3.- Meeting with the Administrative Department - Being in contact with the administrative staff is very important since they will be the ones helping solve academic problems that can emerge during those college years; counselors are the ones that approve or disapprove class selection.

¿Por qué es importante visitar las universidades?

En esta época del año los estudiantes del último grado de secun-daria reciben las cartas de aceptación por parte de las universi-

dades y se enfrentarán a una decisión que les puede afectar para el resto de su vida. Panfletos, libros, postales siguen llegando en forma continua, tratando de convencer al joven, pero ¿qué es lo que hay que tener en consideración? Uno de los aspectos más importantes es la visita a la universidad, por lo que a continuación compartimos una pequeña lista para ayudarles en esta tarea.

1.- ¿Cuándo? - Aquí lo importante es visitar cuando los estudian-tes universitarios están activamente atendiendo la universidad, ya que se puede ver el flujo y diversidad del alumnado. Actual-mente hay muchas universidades que ofrecen clases todo el año, por lo que el mes o semana que se visite no es tan vital, a no ser que el clima de la ciudad sea muy frío o muy caluroso; en este caso, convendría visitar en esas fechas ya que el estudiante tendrá que enfrentarse a esas temperaturas durante el cursado.

2.- ¿Cómo planear la visita? - Aunque parezca obvio, se debe escribir una lista de las universidades que desea visitar, hacer un itinerario de ellas para luego planificar los destinos, ya sea calculando viaje en automóvil, viajes de avión, tiempo de demora de un punto a otro, cantidad de tiempo necesaria para la visita. Además es conveniente hacer un listado de preguntas y cosas que al estudiante le interesen, como por ejemplo, ¿qué hacen los estudiantes para los juegos de fútbol americano?

3.- Reuniones con la administración de un departamento específico: El estar en contacto con el personal administrativo es muy importante, ya que ellos serán los que ayuden a resolver problemas que pudiesen presentarse; además los consejeros son los que aprueban o reprueban las materias a seguir.

4.- Visitar la oficina de ayuda financiera - Una de las oficinas que mucha gente se olvida de visitar es la oficina de ayuda financiera. Ésta es la que está a cargo de todas las cuentas, préstamos, becas, pagos, etc. Además ellos pueden ayudar con información de becas particu-lares de la universidad, subvenciones, o formas de pagar un préstamo.

5.- Atender sesiones de información - El fin de atender esta sesión es el poder conocer y escuchar más detalladamente lo que la universidad ofrece, tanto en lo académico como en lo social. La ubicación de las oficinas, las carreras impartidas, la ayuda financiera, las oficinas de terapia, la asistencia de depor-tes, etc., pueden ser mencionadas durante estas sesiones.

Durante la visita no olvide conversar con estudiantes, visitar los dormitorios, probar diferentes casinos, preguntar sobre estaciona-miento, eventos deportivos, eventos religiosos, eventos de negocios, opciones para elegir compañero de cuarto, planes de comida, posibi-lidades para planear un fin de semana o atender una clase. Recuerde que mientras más pregunte, más fácil le será para tomar una decisión de dónde asistir. Y por último, recuerde que el 1 de Mayo es la fecha límite en la cual el estudiante puede contestar a la universidad en la que decidió seguir su carrera universitaria.

4.- Financial Aid Office - Although many people forget to visit the financial aid office, they are the ones that take care of all the charges to a student’s account such as loans, scholarships, payments, etc. In addition they can help with information on specific scholarships, grants or ways to pay back a loan.

5.- Information Sessions - Attending informative sessions will help the student learn in more detail about what the university has to offer in all aspects. Academics, clubs and organizations, specific campus locations, majors, sports and counseling services are usually explained during these sessions.

During the visit be sure to talk with students, visit the dorms, ask questions about parking, sporting events, religious events, business events, and options on how to choose a roommate, meal plans, and if possible spend a weekend or attend a class. Take notes, pictures and videos; a major decision will soon need to be made, as May 1st is the last day to accept or deny a college offer.

Spring is the perfect time for participat-ing in all the outdoor activities that we love and enjoy.

A suitable activity during this time of year is going for a walk, cherishing the beauty of “simplicity,” the sublimity of nature and celebrating life. In particular in this edition, Dr. Rebecca Bustamante presents some useful tips to taking advantage of this fresh, renewing and inspiring season. She invites us to take action, try new approaches and, perhaps, renew ourselves in some sense.

Since the establishment of The Woodlands in 1974, the focal point has been nature everywhere. The green landscape has become an extraordinary appeal. We are privileged to be recognized as a leading master planned community and we are conscious of the importance of maintaining a positive connection with the Earth.

However, if you are seeking to explore new green areas, the city of Houston has a beautiful park called Discovery Green, which definitely transforms the experiences and the perceptions of what is commonly known as the city. It is a park that has revitalized the central urban district of the Space City. Through art, this month Camilo Reinales shares original pictures and a detailed description of what is known as The Lung of Houston: Discovery Green Park.

OTC 2015 and the Texas Oil IndustryFrom May 4th to 7th “OTC 2015 (Offshore Technology Conference)”, the world’s most renowned event in the oil industry, will be held in Houston. ConnexionW spoke to Robert R. Schwager, founder of Condor International, a Texan enterprise that provides products and services to Latin America. From his experience, he brings us closer to understanding the circumstances and opportunities that the oil field offers today.

EL AMBIENTE PRIMAVERAL ES UN ALIADO A LA hora de hacer todas aquellas actividades que disfrutamos

al aire libre. Una alternativa apropiada para el momento es salir a caminar, valorar la belleza de lo “simple”, de lo sublime, de la naturaleza y celebrar la vida. Precisamente en esta edición, la Dra. Rebecca Bustamante nos presenta algunas recomendacio-nes útiles para aprovechar ese aire fresco, renovador e inspira-dor. Nos invita a tomar acción en esta época y, por qué no, quizá renovarnos en algún sentido.

Desde la fundación de The Woodlands, en el año 1974, su princi-pal característica es la naturaleza por doquier. Esos espacios verdes se convierten en un atractivo fenomenal. Somos privilegiados al reconocernos como una comunidad planificada y conciente de la importancia de mantener esa conexión con la tierra.

Ahora bien, si lo que está buscando es explorar nuevas zonas verdes, la ciudad de Houston tiene un hermoso parque llamado Discovery Green, el cual definitivamente transforma las expe-riencias y percepciones de lo que se conoce comúnmente como ciudad; es un parque que ha revitalizado el distrito central urbano de la Ciudad Espacial. A través del arte, Camilo Reinales nos comparte este mes fotografías orginales y una descripción deta-llada de lo que se conoce como el pulmón verde de Houston: el parque Discovery Green.

Blooming flowers and trees during spring, around Easter time, bring us fragrant

newness…a sense of renewed life with the vibrancies of birds and butterflies. Renewal is commonly defined as restoration or renovation, however, in a spiritual sense, renewal indicates growth and transformation. Spring renewal can take many forms that combine our physical, spiritual and psychological spaces.

For many folks, spring is a time to dispose of the old to make space for the new. Sometimes we can best renew ourselves by taking physical action rather than waiting to feel “ready” or motivated to make changes or try new approaches.Space Cleaning

Spring space cleaning is a good example of this. In fact, in the Chinese practice of Feng Shui, the importance of clearing out spaces by cleaning and disposing of excess stuff allows positive energy or Qi (pronounced Chi) to enter and occupy living and working spaces.

Spring is a great time to focus on improving the Feng Shui of your home and office by going through closets and taking gently used clothing items to resale stores or donating them to one of the many area agencies that provide items to those in need. Take note of when was the last time you actually used something or wore an article of clothing. If it has been more than one year, it may no longer be a useful item for you to keep and you should consider donating, selling, gifting or disposing of it.

Whether you harness the support of your family or decide to hire a housekeeper to help with your deep spring cleaning, consider zeroing in on the very high and the very low areas of your home. High areas might include high windows, ceiling fans and cob webs that accumulate in high corners. Low areas include baseboards and corners. In Hindu religions, keeping the entrance to one’s house clean and welcoming is also essential to ensuring the entrance of positive energies.

Another suggestion is to do a reconnaissance of the framed photos and artwork in your home. Do they reflect who you are and where you are currently in your life? It might be time to update them and ensure they still evoke appreciation and pleasure. This exercise can provide clues to how you feel about change and embracing and planning for change.Physical Movement

Another action that has been proven by scientists to provide more physical energy and a positive outlook is regular movement or exercise. Researchers have even demonstrated that exercise renews cells and diminishes depression and possible dementia. People who move more have been shown to have greater cognitive functioning. Make a commitment to move more this spring.

More movement does not have to involve a gym membership or boot camp. Simply going out for short walks and taking stairs can lead to greater health, cognitive clarity and vitality. Do not wait around to feel motivated to move, just get out there and walk around the block. Enjoy the flowers, butterflies and birds; you will feel energized and inspired.Spiritual Renewal

Spiritual renewal has also been proven to emerge when committing to regular practice, both individually and in community. People who quietly practice daily prayer or meditation, even 10 minutes per day, report feeling more “centered” and relaxed. Some people find daily prayer books or journals helpful in guiding their practice. Others might turn to the numerous recorded meditation and mindfulness exercises that are available online and through free phone apps. Those who find spiritual renewal in community might benefit most from joining a new church or participating in community events that service others. The most important step is to take small actions that will lead to more positive energy and a sense of renewal.

Imagine how a thorough spring cleaning, daily movement and regular prayer and meditation practice might renew your mind, body, and spirit.

sentido de renovación en la vida de la mano del vibrante aleteo de las aves y las mariposas. Este tipo de renovación es común-mente definido como una restauración. Sin embargo, en un sentido espiritual, la renovación indica crecimiento y transforma-ción. La renovación primaveral puede tomar muchas formas que combinan nuestros espacios físicos, espirituales y psicológicos.

Para muchas personas, la primavera es un tiempo para deshacerse de lo viejo, abriendo así espacio para lo nuevo. A veces la mejor manera de renovarnos es tomando acción, en lugar de estar espe-rando a sentirse “listo” o motivado para realizar cambios.

LIMPIEZA DEL ESPACIO FÍSICOLa limpieza primaveral del espacio físico es un buen ejemplo

de este tipo de cambios. De hecho, en la práctica china del Feng Shui, la importancia de la depuración de los espacios mediante la limpieza y la eliminación del exceso de material permite que la energía positiva o Qi (que se pronuncia Chi) entre y ocupe los lugares donde vivimos y trabajamos.

La primavera es un buen momento para enfocarnos o mejorar la puesta en práctica del Feng Shui en la casa u oficina. How many local companies donate one million dollars a year to Montgomery County United Way (MCUW)? One.

During the 2015 Annual Meeting, Campaign Chair and CEO and President of Entergy Texas, Inc., Sallie Rainer, recognized Anadarko Petroleum Corporation with the Million Dollar Circle Award and the Mitchell Entergy & Development Heritage Award. In an effort to strategically support long term solutions that benefit Montgomery County, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation has invested more than $8,121,765 since 1997.

Other Mitchell Energy & Development Heritage Award honorees included CB&I, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, Entergy Texas, Inc. and Praxair Inc. The Mitchell Energy & Development Heritage Award signifies a company’s lifetime achievement in our community through their efforts with MCUW.

Montgomery County Hospital District (MCHD) received the Rising Star Award, which recognizes an organization with the greatest increase in the number of leadership donors during their annual campaign. MCHD had an outstanding 800% increase in leadership giving.

Also recognized for their collaboration was Knock Out Business of the Year, Nordstrom–The Woodlands. As a new retail neighbor of The Woodlands, Nordstrom hosted their first Montgomery County United Way campaign; Nordstrom supports several local charities and encourages volunteerism within their organization.

“The Woodlands Waterway Festival is held in a beautiful venue, a new affluent community in an affluent north Houston suburb. It is very well organized and typically attracts a mostly traditional-minded, suburban clientele than the Bayou City events downtown. However, it is beginning to attract a more contemporary leaning crowd in recent years, thanks to heavy advertising in the Houston area. Overall quality is high, with few exceptions. Staff works very hard to support the artists with water and snacks throughout both days. Artists’ parking is close by. Fun VIP party. Booth spaces are roomy and very good security is provided. Director & staff bend over backwards to help artists with a challenging load-in and load-out, and they have to balance too much interference with not enough direction, and they do a very good job of it. Lots of volunteers with golf carts are available to help.”

With the goal of bringing together everyone in the school

community and sharing their achievements throughout the year, the Conroe Independent School District held the Annual Hispanic Achievement Forum on February 26th. The gathering was attended by the directors of the school, led by Dr. Don Stockton, Superintendent; the Interim President of Lone Star College, Dr. Rebecca Riley; the Director of the Scholar Welcome Center, Rodrigo Chaves; the Coordina-tor of the ESL Program, Dayren Carlise, and the Director of Montgomery County United Way, Julie Martineau, among other representatives of social organizations.

“Our Hispanic population is on the rise,” Dr. Don Stockton said. “No matter who the student is, all students have different needs, our job is to make sure that we provide the services that will ensure their success.”

For Rodrigo Chaves, Director of the four welcome centers in the District, this is “an example that we all work together because we have the same goal: to have an educated, cultured population that will be very responsible for a better future. We educate and connect them with all the organizations that can work with them, such as Lone Star College, which is the first step to a four year college degree or a technical career.” The mission of the welcome center is to educate the families that are coming in on all matters related to the operation of the American education system.

As part of the event, Bernardo Sisniega, an 8th grader, was one of the students recognized for his academic achievements. He arrived in The Woodlands seven months ago unable to speak English. “I didn’t think that I was going to learn so fast, but I feel good now. In Mexico, I attended a French school and I was used to learning languages. What I’ve liked the most is that the teachers help you a lot; they are very concerned about their students.”

For Alberto Sisniega, Bernardo’s father, the key to his son’s success, besides being a good student is that they made him feel sure that he was going to succeed in this system. “I’m aware that the purpose of the American system is the intellectual development of children, and also the professional development of the academic faculty, in relation to the children’s success.”

The Chilkawa Group, led by Alejandra Tapia, presented a sample of Mexican Pre-Hispanic dances full of music, color, and culture.

CON EL OBJETIVO DE REUNIR A TODAS LAS partes que integran la comunidad escolar y

compartir los logros obtenidos a lo largo del año, el Distrito Escolar de Conroe llevó a cabo el 26 de febrero el Foro Anual de Avance Hispano. El encuentro contó con la presencia de los directivos de la institución escolar, encabezada por el Dr. Don Stockton, Super-intendente escolar, la presidenta interina del Lone Star College Dra. Rebecca Riley, el director del Centro de Bienvenida escolar Rodrigo Chaves, la coordinadora del programa ESL, Dayren Carlise y la directora de Montogmery County United Way, Julie Martineau, entre otros representantes de organizaciones sociales.

“Nuestra población hispana tiende a subir” afirmó el Dr. Don Stockton. “No importa qué estudiante es. Todos llegan en diferentes niveles por lo que nuestro trabajo es asegurarnos de que les proporcionamos los servicios que les aseguran el éxito”.

Para Rodrigo Chaves, director de los cuatro centros de bienvenida que tiene este distrito escolar, esto es “un ejemplo de que todos trabajamos juntos porque tenemos un mismo fin, tener una población educada, culta, que vaya a ser muy responsable para un mejor porvenir. Nosotros los educamos y los conectamos con todas las organizaciones que pueden colaborar con ellos, como por ejemplo el Lone Star College, que es el primer paso a una carrera universitaria de cuatro años o a una carrera técnica”. La misión del centro de bienvenida es educar a las familias que van llegando en todo lo referente al funcionamiento del sistema educativo norteamericano.

En el marco del evento, Bernardo Sisniega, alumno de 8º grado, fue uno de los estudiantes que recibió reco-nocimiento por su rendimiento académico. Llegó a The Woodlands hace 7 meses sin saber hablar inglés. “No pensé que fuera a aprender tan rápido, pero ya me siento bien. En México iba a una escuela francesa y ya estaba acostumbrado a aprender idiomas. Lo que más me ha gustado es que los profesores te ayudan mucho, ellos se preocupan mucho por los alumnos.”

Para Alberto Sisniega, padre de Bernardo, la clave del éxito de su hijo, además de que ser muy estudioso, es que lo hicieron sentir muy seguro de que iba a tener éxito en este sistema. “Estoy consciente que el objetivo del sistema educativo norteamericano es el desarrollo intelectual de los niños y también el desarrollo profesional de los académicos pero en relación al éxito de los niños.”

El grupo Chilkawa, dirigido por la maestra Alejandra Tapia, presentó una muestra de las danzas prehispánicas mexicanas llenas de música, color y cultura.

While Houston is preparing to host the OTC 2015 (Offshore Technology Conference),

from May 4-7, the world’s most renowned event in the oil industry, ConnexionW invited Condor International, one of the Texan participating enterprises to share their story and importance in the field of oil relations between the United Stated and Latin America.

Today, more than ever, the opportunities of the oil industry in Latin America are being strengthened. Robert R. Although the economy and the crisis with the price of oil has been a concern, they see very positive aspects. According to Schwager, “We have several projects that we are negotiating right now. We have a very large project that we have been working with clients in Colombia. One of them refers to a lake in Barrancabermeja, Colombia, called Cienaga Miramar. This lake has been impacted for over 55 years with a lot of contamination due to several factors. The local community needs to find the solution to remediate and prevent future contamination into the lake and we are ready to help them. For water treatment and to prevent future contamination we use BioDaf technology.”

The Boy Scouts of America, Tall Timbers District, held its annual Business and

Community Leadership Dinner on February 26, 2015 at The Woodlands Country Club Palmer Course. During the event, Bruce Tough, Chairman of the Board for The Woodlands Township, discussed the organization and the leadership that the Boy Scouts represent and also honored the work of Nelda Blair, one of the most recognized leaders in the Houston area. The Good Scout Award is given each year to an individual who exemplifies the values and ideals of scouting, through community leadership and service.

During his speech, Tough emphasized the virtues that represent this organization: trust, loyalty, helpfulness, kindness, courtesy, obedience and cheerfulness. He also referred to Nelda Blair as one of the most influential women in Texas, a role model of leadership and work and brimful with a scout’s virtues.

By the same token, Nelda Blair took the opportunity to appeal to both youths and adults on two key points that leadership requires: to love what you do and to work as a team. “It is difficult to be a leader if you don’t love what you do. I encourage you, whether you are 8 or 80, to love what you do.” […] “Always take into consideration cooperation and teamwork, for the community, the state, the country and the world.”

In addition to the trophy, Blair received the campaign hat, which is part of the original scout uniform. The four deep indentations on all four sides of the campaign hat symbolize the difficulties that a scout faces, which may come from any of the cardinal points. The hat symbolizes the energy to build character in life and to face difficulties.

llevó a cabo la cena anual de Negocios y Lide-razgo el pasado 26 de febrero en el Country Club Palmer Course de The Woodlands.

En el marco del evento Bruce Tough, presidente de la Junta Directiva del Township de The Wood-lands, además de resaltar la labor de la organiza-ción y el liderazgo que representan los Boy Scouts, honró el trabajo de Nelda Blair, una de las líderes más reconocidas en el área de Houston. Blair recibió el premio al Buen Scout que se otorga cada año a un individuo que ejemplifica los valores e ideales del scout a través del liderazgo y el servicio comu-nitario.

Durante su discurso, Tough hizo énfasis en las virtudes que representan a esta organización: confianza, lealtad, servicio, amabilidad, cortesía, obediencia y alegría. Asimismo, se refirió a Blair como una de las mujeres más influyentes de Texas, ejemplo de liderazgo, de trabajo y plena de las virtudes de una scout.

Por su parte Blair aprovechó la ocasión para hacer un llamado tanto a jóvenes como a adultos sobre dos puntos claves que requiere el liderazgo: amar lo que se hace y trabajar en grupo. “Es difícil ser líder si uno no ama lo que hace. Te invito a que, aunque tengas 8 u 80 (años), ames lo que haces. […] Siempre teniendo en cuenta la cooperación y el trabajo en grupo; por la comunidad, por el Estado, por el país y por el mundo”.

Además de la estatuilla, Blair recibió el sombrero de cuatro pozos, el cual forma parte del uniforme original del scout. Los cuatro golpes (o pozos) significan las dificultades que enfrenta un scout y que pueden venir de cualquiera de los puntos cardinales. El sombrero simboliza la energía para forjarse en la vida y para hacerle frente a las difi-cultades.

Academic problems? Behavioral problems? When parents receive a call from their child’s

teacher to schedule a meeting regarding academic or behavioral problems, a series of emotions may arise: panic, anger and denial (that a problem exists). At the forefront of your mind is concern: How should I prepare for the conference? Prior to the meeting make a list of the changes that have occurred at home, such as: divorce, change in parent’s work schedule, illness or health related issues, inconsistent living arrangements, an addition to the family dynamic or changes in sleep habits. This will allow you to have a better vision of what is happening at home, making it easier to share your concerns with the teacher in order for both of you to create an individualized plan to meet the needs of the student.

During the meeting, ask specific questions:Elementary School K-5 › Does my child have difficulty in all subjects? › Have you noticed changes lately? › Which subject are he/she exhibiting the most difficulty? › Can you send extra work to help him/her at home? › Is after-school tutoring a possibility? › Are there additional resources or websites that may be helpful?

Middle School 6-8In addition to the questions asked of elementary students,

it is good to ask if the teacher has noticed emotional changes that are uncommon at this age. In general, middle school students do not like routines and they are always looking for something new and exciting, especially with regard to technology.Questions: › What are your recommendations/suggestions for help with school work and tasks: Internet, library or museums?

› I do not understand what my son/daughter is studying, whom can I ask for help? Is there a learning facility or a particular teacher I can contact? (Kumon, Huntington or Mathnasium)

Secondary EducationYour child’s GPA starts counting from the first day of

high school, so it is very important for parents to stay on top of their student’s academic, extracurricular and social activities. Although it does take some work from the parent, do not hesitate to contact and ask for help from your child’s teachers, counselor or administrative personnel.

Remember to Follow Up. After 2- 3 weeks, follow up with the teacher to check on the status of your child’s academic or behavioral issues. Do you live in Houston? Are you tired of the lack of nature in your daily routine? Well, if

you are, the solution is simple. I am going to introduce you to Discovery Green, summarizing its spatial qualities and spectacular interactive design.

Discovery Green is a 12-acre park located in downtown Houston. The park opened in April of 2008. Maconda Brown O’Connor, of the Brown Foundation, and Nancy G. Kinder, along with a team of private Houston philanthropists, took interest in the park’s dramatic uniqueness and proposed the idea of an urban park that could redefine downtown’s landscape. The original site was divided into two large parking lots adjacent to the George R. Brown Convention Center by the end of the 20th century.

The project was a 13-month process that involved design and development of the $52,000,000 park and underground garage. The architecture of the park is composed of three primary buildings: a café, a parking garage and a restaurant. The design of the park creates a rhythm of interrelating outdoor spaces that at the same time preserves the feeling of openness and unity as a single place. Large covered outdoor verandas on the southern side decrease heat caused by the sun, improving and encouraging outdoor seating and gathering by providing shelter from Houston’s characteristic heat and downpours. The underground garage is equipped with a permanent dewatering system that provides refilling for the lake. This mechanism reduces the water consumption and storm water discharge.

EL YORKSHIRE TERRIER O YORKIE, como también se lo conoce, es un perro muy

popular incluso entre celebridades. Esta raza se originó en el condado de Yorkshire, en Inglaterra, como uno más de los tantos terrier empleados para cazar animales de madriguera.

El Yorkie es un perro muy energético, valiente, vivaz e inteligente. A pesar de su pequeño tamaño, suele ser un perro muy valiente capaz de enfrentarse a grandes riesgos.

Se adaptan muy bien a vivir en un departamento, pero pueden ser muy ruidosos. Es muy importante tomar en serio la socialización de los Yorkshire cuando son cachorros, para que no desarrollen conductas agresivas o pose-sivas; además se debe cuidar de su integridad física porque son muy frágiles.

Al ser perros tan pequeños, los Yorkshire terrier no soportan bien los tratos rudos. Por tanto, no son perros adecuados para familias con niños pequeños.

No toleran muy bien los climas fríos y se sienten mejor en climas templa-dos. De cualquier manera, es imprescindible llevarlos a pasear a diario para que socialicen pero se debe tener mucho cuidado cuando interactúan con perros grandes.

El pelaje del Yorkshire terrier requiere un alto mantenimiento, aunque estos perros no pierden mucho pelo. Es necesario cepillar y peinar, al menos dos veces por semana y bañar con champú y acondicionador especial para esta raza. Los perros de exposición necesitan cuidados más intensos.

Estos perritos son muy apegados a su dueño y requieren de compañía todo el tiempo. Si te gustan los animales y no te molesta tener un amiguito en tu regazo constantemente, entonces este pequeño y amoroso perrito es para ti.

Tenga presente que hay muchos perritos en refugios a la espera de tener un hogar lleno de amor.

The Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie as it is also known, is a very popular dog breed, even

among celebrities. This breed originated in Yorkshire, England, as one of the many Terriers that were used to hunt burrowing animals.

Yorkies are very energetic, brave, vivacious and intelligent dogs. Despite their small size, they tend to be very courageous and can face great risks.

They adapt well to living in an apartment, but can be very noisy. It is very important to take the Yorkshire puppies’ socialization seriously so they do not develop aggressive nor possessive behavior. It is also critical to take care of their physical integrity as they are very fragile.

Being so small, Yorkshire dogs do not tolerate rough play. Therefore, these dogs are not suitable for families with young children.

They do not tolerate cold weather very well and they feel more comfortable in temperate climates. Either way, it is essential to take them for a walk everyday so that they can socialize, but take precaution when they interact with large dogs.

The Yorkshire Terrier’s coat requires high maintenance, although these dogs do not lose much hair. It is necessary to brush and comb them at least twice a week and bathe them with a shampoo and conditioner specific to their breed. Yorkie’s that participate in Dog Shows require a more intensive care.

These puppies are very attached to their owner and require company all the time. If you love animals and do not mind having a buddy on your lap constantly, then this small and loving puppy is for you. Remember, there are many doggies in shelters waiting to have a loving home!

THE PINK 5K RETURNSTO THE WOODLANDSThe Breast Cancer Charities of America announced the return of ‘The Pink 5k’ to The Woodlands on Saturday, May 9th in Creekside Park. The Pink 5k run/walk race will start at 8:30 am and the one mile loop, where wheelchairs and strollers are welcome, will start at 8:45 am.

Early bird registration is now open online at www.ThePink5k.com, through March 31staa; participants can register for only $30 for adults and $20 for kids. Beginning April 1st, registration will increase to $35 for adults. Proceeds from the event go to help the charity’s mission to eliminate breast cancer as a life-threatening illness and to directly help women to prevent and survive breast cancer through their numerous program services.

celebrating 20 years of cultural management and social development this year. Salgado is Founder and President of the nonprofit organization Miss Colombian Independence Pageant and Director of the Barranquilla Carnival in Houston.

Along with the General Consul from Colombia in Houston, Miguel Rafael López Méndez, on February 21st the community joined Gladys to celebrate her 72nd birthday and to thank her for her dedication and contribution to the Colombian culture. Thanks for her devotion!

On February 25th The Woodlands chapter of the Mexican

Entrepreneur Association presented a forum called “ABC of the Educational System.” Three experts presented an approach on how the educational system functions in the United States. Susy Brown discussed schools and the steps to completing a solid application for admission to Universities. Patricia Córdoba spoke about high school student transition: High School - College - University. Victor Barrionuevo explained the importance of academic planning beginning at the elementary school level.
