Design Complete For New Hospital Exterior Signage

The design for exterior signage at the new hospital has been finalized and will help patients and visitors easily navigate the 61-acre site. The complex signage plan was created with the assistance of Innerface Signs, which provides planning and sign manufacturing. In addition to selecting the proper signage locations, each sign was designed to be functional, yet attractive; reflecting the overall design of the hospital. For example, the background of each sign matches the color of the primary brick of the building. The posts and border colors on each sign match the accent brick. The striking main entrance, or “monument” signs, will have masonry bases made out of local, natural stone. For more information about the new hospital, contact Vice President of New Projects, Wayne Becker, at 294-4810 or [email protected]

The Employee Campaign Is Not Over Until YOU Are On Board

In January, we surpassed our employee “Possible Dream” dollar goal. However, we also have a goal to increase employee participation in fundraising for our new hospital. We want every employee to have the opportunity for his or her name to be engraved on a permanent wall plaque in the new hospital’s cafeteria.

Now is the time to join your fellow Orange Regional employees and personally commit to the Employee Campaign for our new hospital. Making a donation is easy and can be done through payroll deduction. You can make a one-time donation or a pledge in a set amount to be deducted from your salary. To join the prestigious “Power of One Club”, you must donate 1 hour of your salary per pay period for 3 years. Those who enroll in the “Power of One Club” will receive a commemorative pin and will receive their choice of a tee shirt or travel mug. To obtain a pledge form, contact the Foundation Office at 294-2135 or go to Orange Regional’s intranet, look for the Possible Dream logo (far right) and click on the EMPLOYEE CAMPAIGN, then click on the Possible Dream Pledge Form and print. After you fill it out, send it to the Foundation Office, either through interoffice mail or the US Postal Service c/o Orange Regional Medical Center Foundation, 4 Harriman Drive, Medical Arts Building #2, Goshen, NY 10924.

Pharmaceutical Waste InitiativeBeginning in July 2010, Orange Regional will enhance its Hazardous Waste Stream Program by implementing a pharmaceutical waste initiative. The initiative will provide all of Orange Regional’s caregivers the ability to dispose all medications in special color-coded waste receptacles, which is in accordance with new State and Federal Regulations. This will include the recycling of plastic; metal; glass; paper; ink and toner cartridges. Additionally, did you know that Orange Regional currently conducts the following “green” initiatives in order to improve our environment?

• 245 tons of cardboard are recycled annually

• An on-site shredding program of confidential paper saves 2,789 trees annually

• 36 tons of plastic, metal and glass are recycled annually

Dear Rich:

I have just returned from the Arden Hill Campus of Orange Regional Medical Center where I spent six hours in the emergency room with my 86-year-old client who lives at Glen Arden. I was concerned for her because she had a double by-pass nine years ago. I called the ambulance when she confided that she felt listless and became breathless after taking only a few steps. I finally had to leave the emergency room at 5:00 p.m. without knowing if she was going to be admitted, although I requested it since I wasn’t sure she would be safe in her apartment with no one to observe whether she was breathing easier. Dr. Piriano was waiting for the Hospitalist to give him the orders for admission. I was very pleased with Dr. Piriano’s “bedside manner.”

I am writing to say some favorable things about my client’s care. What a change from several years ago. My client was seen quickly by the very professional and caring nurse (Adrienne) and aide (Kelly). The various technicians who did the tests were also professional, respectful and friendly. As the hours went by, any time my client needed help she received it very quickly. This was accomplished in spite of the extremely busy emergency room where ambulances seemed to be bringing in patients constantly. And then there were the surprising little “niceties”- offerings of water or cold drink, coffee, sandwich and cookies by a volunteer or the aide. It brought me back to the early days of Arden Hill Hospital when it was known for its warm, personal care.

This is what the community remembers when coming to the hospital, and I am sure this kind of atmosphere will be carried forward in the new ORMC hospital.

I will be sure to inform my friends and colleagues of this experience as will my client.

Sincerely, Marjorie Latzk

Orange Regional: A Culture Of Caring and Concern Patient ‘Thankful’ For Favorable Emergency Department Experience

Below is a letter written by one patient’s legal representative with regard to the care provided during a recent visit to the Arden Hill Campus Emergency Department. The letter was sent to Board of Directors Member, Richard Shapiro.

The Pastoral Care Program

Spiritual support is every patient’s choice. For those who request religious counseling during their visit, Orange Regional Medical Center provides pastoral services as part of its newly enhanced Pastoral Care Program.

For patients to reach their fullest recovery, their spiritual requirements must be addressed as well as their physical and medical needs. Orange Regional conducts special orientation and training programs for leaders of the community’s various religious organizations. Clergy members are educated about hospital policies and procedures, including such topics as the nursing process and patient rights and ethics. Under the leadership of Deacon Richard Trapani, the Pastoral Care Program now has 144 members including clergy and lay ministers who represent 44 religions.

“For the well-being of our patients, it is essential that all clergy work together; we need to emphasize what we have in common, not our differences.” said Deacon Trapani. Orange Regional’s clergy can provide pastoral care to patients and families dealing with stressful situations. Counseling can also help with ethical and end-of-life decision-making.

The Pastoral Care Program has many goals outlined for its success at Orange Regional including continued support of the Palliative Care Program; counseling for nurses; updating policy and procedures for clergy; recruitment of quality clergy from the community; the creation of a newsletter for clergy members and a plan to provide services in the Chapel at the new hospital that can also be listened to from patient rooms.

The Pastoral Care Program office is located on the first floor at the Horton Campus. For more information, contact Deacon Richard Trapani at 342-7188 or [email protected]
