Happy Chamber New Year! As you may know, November 1st marks the Chamber's new fiscal year. As we start our new operational year, we remember that business advocacy and enhancement are the keys to the economic success of Boca Raton. On the cusp of our 60th

Anniversary, the Boca Chamber is still striving to enhance the conditions that ensure the prosperity of our Membership and help maintain the superior quality of life that we enjoy in Boca Raton.

Last month, we celebrated the transition of leadership of our Board of Directors at our Annual Celebration. John Mulhall of Rutherford Mulhall, P.A., has led the Chamber effectively for the past year. We now look forward to the leadership of Cheryl Budd of NCCI Holdings, Inc. as the new Chair of the Board for our 60th year of operation. We also welcomed Jerry Fedele of Boca Raton Regional Hospital to the Board’s Executive Committee, where he will serve as Treasurer. Another big thank you gets extended to our friend Forrest Heathcott of JM Family Enterprises, who has completed his term as Immediate Past Chair.

We would also like to welcome Jackie Reeves, Managing Director of Bell Rock Capital and Michael Daszkal, CPA and Partner at Daszkal Bolton LLP – both esteemed professionals in their respective fields, and excellent examples of strong business leaders to the Board of Directors. And lastly, we thank Joe Cilia of Boca Town Center for his years of service to the Board of Directors.

Fall is a great time of year because we celebrate the volunteer leadership of the Chamber and within the Chamber. At the October Membership Breakfast, we

recognized and honored two Chamber members for their dedication to good business, leadership and involvement in the Chamber and the community. Michael Church of Elements Therapeutic Massage was named the Chamber Person of the Year and Eliot Popper of Levinsohn, Shide, Popper Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney was the recipient of the Chair’s Award.

During this, the holiday season, I encourage you to ‘Buy Chamber’. The Boca Chamber has more than 1,200 members, offering everything from auto detailing to catering, hospitality and jewelry. Our

members range from west near 441 where you can find karate lessons for the

kids at East/West Karate or send good wishes to a loved one from

Edible Arrangements — all the way to east Boca, where

you could treat someone to a delicious dinner at Ovenella or help them with an interior design project at Floral & Hearty Designs and so much more. From Miami to Jupiter, Boca Chamber Members have all of the

gift ideas you need for the holiday season.

On the topic of holiday shopping, on Wednesday,

December 14th, we will be hosting our 30th Annual Holiday Auction With A

Cause at Via Mizner Golf & Country Club. Every year, this event offers amazing gift ideas. As always, the proceeds will allow the Chamber to continue the many great programs and events events that you enjoy all year long. This year, the Chamber has decided to donate a portion of the proceeds to both the Golden Bell Education Foundation and one of our Non-Profit Member Organizations. The non-profit will be chosen after this magazine is published. Please come support Golden Bell and your fellow Non-Profit Chamber Member at this great event!

Thank you for all of your support! Here’s to 60 years and still going strong!

With the fall holidays approaching, area employers are expected to hire additional staff to handle anticipated seasonal increases in business. Current on-line advertized openings in Palm Beach County indicate that employers are seeking retail salespersons and supervisors, maintenance and repair workers, cashiers, restaurant cooks, food preparation workers and servers. If you are considering seasonal employment, use the following tips to assist you with your search and help you land a suitable job: Tip # 1: Begin NOW! Looking for a job requires serious effort and daily persistence. Rededicate yourself and remain positive. Tip # 2: Register and Get Help! At home, school or the library, access a computer to visit www.employflorida.com. Register and enter all the information required to build a resume. Tip# 3: Explore New Options! Have an open mind about temporary and part-time seasonal positions that could lead to year-round or full-time opportunities. Tip# 4: Network offline! Use fall football gatherings, holiday socials and other casual encounters as an opportunity to ask neighbors, friends, family, – everyone – for ideas and names of others that you can talk to about opportunities for short or long-term work. Tip #5: Be Gracious! If you learn of an opening or obtain an interview through a lead from a contact, be sure to call to thank the person for the information. Your contact may offer you additional tips and offer to help you further. After the interview or even a brief meeting in person, be sure to send a thank you letter to the person you met. Tip # 6: Become an expert! If you want to work for a specific employer or you are offered an interview, find out as much as possible about the business. Pick up brochures and flyers about the business or products, look online at their website. Your knowledge of the company, or products

and your genuine interest will make a positive impression.Tip # 7: look sharp! When searching for work, show that you know how to adjust your appearance to reflect a business setting. Your appearance is very important if the job you are seeking requires you to represent the image of the business to customers and clients. Tip #8: Be Prepared! There is a reason that professional actors rehearse and superstar athletes train. You will appear confident and relaxed if you spend time preparing your responses to interview questions. Look online for typical questions and ask a friend or family member to play the interviewer. Take time to get comfortable with your answers without looking at notes. If possible, video your “interview” and critique yourself. Tip #9: Volunteer! Don’t overlook the value of volunteer experience. More than any other time of year, you have many options to participate in food drives, religious, charitable or community activities, walk-a-thons etc. Ask the event chairs and any contacts you make to observe your skills and ask if you can use them for a reference. If possible, volunteer to learn new skills during your charity or community services work and add those new skills to your resume. Tip #10: Hired? Be Outstanding! You got the job! The journey has just begun, be sure you and your good work are noticed. Arrive at your work station early, pay close attention to instructions and remain positive. When you work hard and maintain a positive attitude throughout the stressful holiday season, you might be asked to stay on full-time. With the right attitude and hard work, your seasonal stint may be the first step toward a new career in the New Year. .
