During this first week of August, we are beginning a

sermon series entitled: Times Change. Mission

Remains. The first gospel reading is about the

feeding of the crowds with 5 loaves and two fish. It

was such a small amount of food and yet Jesus fed

everyone. All he asked was that the disciples have

faith and work alongside him. Could Jesus have fed

everyone without the help of the disciples? Yes. But

Jesus wanted to involve the disciples (and each one

of us today) in his saving activity.

With our small acts today--like wearing masks and

staying 6 feet from people or volunteering at the

Mobile Food Truck--these little things, with God’s

help, can make a big difference. I pray that as a

community of faith, the Kinsmen community always

trusts that God can do so much more than we could

ever imagine with our meager efforts.

These little things proclaim the reign of God—the rule

of God. When we have faith to do some very small

things, we witness to the breaking in of God’s will on

earth. These little signs signal that God is in control,

God is in charge, and that chaos (or a tiny virus)

will not reign free. These signs of God’s rule are all

around us if we only have eyes to see and ears to

hear and a tiny bit of faith in what God can do.

Grace and Peace,

Beth Warpmaeker

One of my favorite books is The

Tipping Point by Malcolm

Gladwell. It’s a book that came

out in 2000 and I read it a few

years after that. Wow. That feels

like a very long time ago!

However, the ideas presented in

it have stayed with me…especially in the midst of a

pandemic.

Gladwell mentions several events and phenomena that

have led to negative tipping points: epidemics that got

out of control, graffiti that began to spread unchecked

around a city, the explosion of drug trafficking, and

many other examples. He begins his book by

highlighting how some very small bad things created

conditions that led to some horrible, negative

situations.

As the book progresses, however, he makes the

argument that while very small things can create a

tipping point for something bad, some very small things

can also create a tipping point for something good. For

instance, one city cut their crime in half simply by

cleaning up graffiti. He writes: “Many thought that

worrying about graffiti seemed as pointless as

scrubbing the decks of the Titanic as it headed toward

the icebergs. [But others] argued that the graffiti was

symbolic of the collapse of the system so you had to

win the battle against graffiti [first].” That little thing

made a huge difference.

I wondered why this book and its idea kept coming to

my mind. I wondered why it sounded so familiar. Then I

heard Bishop Mike Rinehart’s sermon a few weeks ago.

He was talking about something so small, something so

microscopic as this coronavirus and how it had

impacted the entire world. He compared this with the

mustard seed. Jesus uses something so small to talk

about the kingdom of God and how it grows. Jesus

wanted us to have faith and to see how God can

multiply our efforts—even if they are the size of a

mustard seed.

SERMON SERIES

Pre-pandemic we often pretended to have

everything under control. Now we’ve been forced

to face reality. There’s very little over which we

have control: from school openings to jobs to

health. This is all quite unsettling, but we are not

alone. In the Bible passages this month, Jesus

encounters one uncontrollable crisis after another--

lack of food, fear, lack of faith, illness—and he

provides what is needed in that moment. He then

calls the disciples (and us) to continue to follow him

and believe. The times may have changed, but our

mission remains: to trust in God and follow our

Savior, Jesus.

MUSIC MINISTRY at KINSMEN

ALLELUIA CHOIR

Sing to the Lord a new song - Psalm 96:1 Yes... we are singing a new song, but we want to continue to sing together. If you

are interested in being a member of the Alleluia Choir, please let Elizabeth Marks

([email protected]) know. Plans are being made for the choir to resume

gathering both virtually and in person. There's a place for everyone in the choir.

"The Lord is king let the heavens ring. God reigns

let the earth be glad."

- from the hymn “This is My Father's World”

COVID 19 has dampened our ability to ring as larger ensembles like

the full Kinsmen Ringers and Jubilee Ringers. Are you interested in

playing handbells? Plans for resuming ringing has begun. Music is

being reviewed with social distancing in mind. Contact Lynnae Schatz

([email protected]) to participate in a handbell ensemble or

for more information.

Here is an update on this wonderful ministry. There were two events that were cancelled from last Spring. They have

been tentatively scheduled for this fall. Their appearances may need to be modified or moved based on COVID

conditions, so stay tuned for future updates. Here are the productions planned so far:

Sunday, September 27 at 6:00 PM - Houston Show Choir (touring ensemble)

Sunday, December 6 at 6:00 PM - AD Players Touring Group present their Christmas show

Houston Show Choir is an adult community show choir with the core vision to share the joy of music with the Greater

Houston community and beyond. Dedicated volunteer singers perform fun repertoire such as pop, show tunes, country,

and more at ticketed shows and other public and private events.

Are you able to provide financial support? The Abendmusik concert series relies wholly on donations to fund our

programs. Freewill offerings are gladly accepted at concerts to cover our expenses and donations may also be made

through the online giving kiosk. Thrivent grants are appreciated, as well. Please consider contributing for this season and

the future!

Please contact Sherrie McMahon at [email protected] for more information. Thank you!

Online Educational Opportunities:

“Beginning a Spanish-speaking ministry”: A 2-Part Speaker Series with The Rev. Dr. Jay Alanís

Kinsmen has started a Spanish-speaking ministry and worship service. There is so much we have been learning and we want to invite everyone on this exciting journey. To help us intentionally reflect on our congregational calling and the cultural dynamics of this calling, we have asked Dr. Jay Alanís to guide us in this process. Dr. Alanís is the Associate Professor of Theology, Culture and Mission (as well as the Executive Director) at the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest in Austin. You can register for one or both of these presentations and discussions on Zoom.

August 27 at 6:30 PM:

A Lutheran Border-Crossing: Serving the neighbor during the Spanish Flu Pandemic

Dr. Jay Alanís will speak about his family story of becoming Lutheran during the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 when a German family provided home remedies for his family. This encounter led to the founding of the first Latinx Lutheran church in Texas 100 years ago. This story will help us reflect on the important calling God has for Kinsmen today—even in the midst of another pandemic! For this first session, please register here: https://bit.ly/33bqGpG

September 24 at 6:30 PM

Living in Third Spaces: Where the church meets the Latinx Community

Using the story of the Ethiopian and Philip from Acts, we will explore how a border-crosser like Philip engaged the African eunuch in a conversation that led to the founding of the Ethiopian Church. Today we are invited to enter cultural spaces that are unfamiliar to us, but where the Spirit awaits us with a mission. A suggested book to read before this presentation is Wolf Shall Dwell With the Lamb. It can be ordered here: https://www.amazon.com/Wolf-Shall-Dwell-Lamb/dp/082724231X)

New Online Class begins September 6

Vanishing Grace: Whatever Happened to the Good News? by Philip Yancey Sundays at 9:45 AM

This five-session course explores the desperate need our world has for grace, and how Christians can truly make the gospel good news again. In this video-based Bible study, participants will explore what kind of news is good to a culture that thinks it has rejected the Christian version. Wading deep into the transformative power of grace, they will hear illuminating stories of how faith can be expressed in ways that disarm even the most cynical.

This will be a video and discussion class on Zoom facilitated by Pastor Beth. To get the most out of the class, you can order the book, but this is not necessary. Register here: https://bit.ly/2Pchnxw

It is our custom to collect a Noisy Offering for a mission partner on the second

Sunday of the month, August . This month’s Noisy Offering recipient is Hope

Center Houston. Hope Center Houston is a faith-based nonprofit, offering a

safe space and caring community, while providing resources for men and women

experiencing homelessness. Hope Center Houston is located at 832 Peakwood,

Houston, 77090.

Hope Center Houston – An Update

We have not stopped serving our homeless friends, the service continues from the front porch of our

building. From Monday through Friday starting at noon, we are serving a restaurant quality take out meal to all

who come. We have served over 3,000 since the pandemic hit. At the same time, we distribute water, mail,

hygiene kits, clean socks and T-shirts. We visit and encourage as much as we can.

Last week, 40-year-old man with a severe heart condition came toward us stopping and starting to catch his

breath. We gave him opportunity to rest and eat on-site. We were able to get him an ID card so that he can get

medical treatment. Another gentleman came hobbling in with a sprained ankle. We loaned him a wheelchair.

Another was barefoot and we got him shoes.

Thank you, Kinsmen Lutheran Church for your continued generous support. You made this possible.

Do you want to grow in your relationship with Christ? Do you want to acquire the skills to handle different life situations in your everyday journey? Then, the Community of Hope is for you where you will be challenged in your relationship with Christ and utilize life skills to help others.

Community of Hope International is designed to create Christian communities of lay volunteer pastoral caregivers united in prayer, shaped by Benedictine Spirituality

and equipped for and serving in pastoral care ministries. The volunteer Pastoral Caregivers remain united in prayer and community as their ministries lead them to serve in the congregation and in the wider community. The program remains rooted in Benedictine Spirituality and is based on the classic “clinical pastoral education” model used in many hospitals to train pastoral caregivers. The Community of Hope training awakens trainees to God’s call on each of our lives by helping individuals discover and better understand their own spiritual gifts for ministry. Each participant is encouraged to make this experience a journey into wholeness to use this opportunity to explore a “rule of life”, practice sacred silence, Christian meditation, compassionate listening, pastoral identity and Lectio Divina, all within the context of Benedictine

Spirituality. This experience builds Community and develop spiritually centered pastoral caregivers.

Community of Hope training will begin virtually August 25 at 5 PM. Interested or questions?

Contact Lynnae Schatz ([email protected]) for an application. The cost for the class is $50.

“I really didn't know exactly what I was getting into - it was quite new. I have been involved in several different similar groups over the years. You probably have too.

But this one turned out to be very different. The class spent 12 weeks of training but it was much more than that. It opened my eyes to finding God in new ways. It ended up in deepening my relationship with my God that I treasure.

It was inspiring to learn how to 'chaplain' with people. I am missing the people that I regularly visited to share communion with Grace Mielke. The joy that they expressed at that opportunity brought as much joy to me.”

- Darlene Boggs

“Care of the sick must rank above and before all else so they may truly be served as Christ, who said, “I was sick and you visited me.”

Stewardship News

Thank you to everyone who has made a change in the way you give your gifts to God! Here is a story from one family

who made a change in the way they give:

“My wife and I had always written a monthly offering check to Kinsmen. We preferred to do this because it reminded us

of our commitment to give back to God for the many blessings that He has given us. Post Covid-19 lock-down, we

determined the best way to maintain our monthly commitment was to set up Kinsmen as a payee on our Chase Online

account. We still have that reminder of our intentional offering to God, but now it's done by completing a simple Chase

bill pay to our payee Kinsmen Lutheran Church each month.”

-Doug & Nadine Wittenberg

Did you know? Update!

After further review, we found the information provided regarding fees charged for various ways of giving needed to be

updated and clarified. The following table shows the result of that effort:

Regardless of the method you use, Kinsmen sincerely appreciates your support of our mission to serve Christ.

As of the end of June, contributions of $1,119,158 have been received, which is 75% of the $1.5 million

campaign target. Wow. Thank you for your generosity! We are now 27 of 36 months of the way through the

campaign (75%). Giving Statements were sent out in July identifying your percentage of contribution to the

campaign, against the total amount you pledged. If the percentage shown on the statement is less than 75%

(the amount of the campaign period that has expired), please prayerfully consider increasing your contributions

to match that percentage. Meeting or exceeding our Capital Campaign pledges will ensure funding of our

current and future ministry objectives. Your continued support of Kinsmen and God’s mission we serve is

greatly appreciated. If you have any questions about the campaign or Kinsmen’s Long Range Vision, please

do not hesitate to ask Peter Abt, John England, Joie Folkers or Pastor Beth.

TOP 10 ESTATE PLANNING MISTAKES

#2 OF 5 IN A SERIES PROVIDED BY THE KINSMEN ENDOWMENT COMMITTEE

(The first two were listed in July) 3. Failure to Review Beneficiaries

Even if specific arrangements for beneficiaries are made in your will, it is important to update and match the beneficiary designations in your insurance policies and retirement plans because they supersede wishes left in your will.

4. Not Updating Powers of Attorney

Powers of attorney allow you to designate a representative to make legal decisions on your behalf if you become unable to manage your own affairs. Failure to name or update your power of attorney could result in the court appointing someone uninformed of your wishes to make your financial and medical decisions. This could lead to a time consuming and costly legal matter.

Use this helpful tool provided by ECLA to compile a complete list of all of your assets: http://download.elca.org/ELCA%20Resource%20Repository/Important_Notes_About_My_Estate.pdf. Then make a plan to review all of the beneficiary forms associated with these assets every 5 years.

Review the items listed in the “Health-Care Confidential Section” of this document: http://kinsmenlutheran.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/25-Documents.pdf. Then, make a plan to review these documents every 5 to 10 years to ensure they are up to date.

Get ready to serve! “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday

Sunday, August 30, 2020

God’s Work. Our Hands. Sunday is a day to put our faith into action by serving our community in ways that

share the love of God with all of God’s people.

“‘God’s work. Our hands.’ Sunday reminds us that we are church together for the sake of the world. Our lives

have been changed by our relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and it’s that encounter with Jesus that

frees us to make a difference.”

— ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton

This will be Kinsmen’s 8th ‘God’s Work. Our Hands.’ Sunday. This year will look different because of COVID

19. The projects are still developing. Please watch the Wednesday ENews and Sunday morning worship

announcements for specific details as we get closer to August 30.

KINSMEN SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT Kinsmen Lutheran Church has a scholarship program for students attending Lutheran Universities and

Seminaries. Meet this year’s recipient.

Hello everybody!

My name is Kylie Zochert and I will be going into my

third year of college at Texas Lutheran University this fall.

I study Dramatic Media and have a double major in

Social Entrepreneurship, both of which I love to pieces.

While this year will be quite different, I’m excited to

continue my education at TLU with the wonderful staff to

support its students. What TLU lacks in size, it makes up

in character and originality. TLU is my home away from

home but nevertheless, new opportunities are in full

swing! Since last year, I had the opportunity to study

abroad in London, Copenhagen, and Paris where I

continue to spread my growing support of peers

interested in experiencing other cultures firsthand. While

most content coming from the dramatic media department

will be showcased online this year, I’m excited to

represent the TLU Theater Group as the new president!

I’m ready for the challenges I will face and overjoyed to

welcome our new students. All these wonderful things I

couldn’t do without the support from Kinsmen and I

cannot thank you all enough. I pray that your families stay

healthy and safe
