RABBI PAYSACH KROHN Mohel, Author, and Lecturer One of the highlights of the Torah Ohr calendar is the annual Scholar-in- Residence program. This program features an outstanding personality with recognized credentials as a dynamic educator and thinker. The Scholar program affords participants the opportunity to explore the depths of Jewish thought and philosophy and to consider serious issues confronting the Modern Orthodox community. Sessions will be held on Friday evening and on Shabbat morning, as well as on Sunday morning. This year, our visiting Scholar will be Rabbi Paysach Krohn, who will speak on topics related to ethics and spiritual growth. He is the author of the bestselling “Maggid” series of books, published by Artscroll, and is inspired by the stories of Rabbi Sholom Schwarden, who is known as “The Maggid of Jerusalem”.

DR. ELLI KRANZLER Shaliach Tzibbur, Hebrew Institute of Riverdale Once a year, our community experiences a musical Shabbat. This year’s exciting program will take place the weekend of December 13.

On Friday night, Kabbalat Shabbat will once again be conducted by Dr. Elli Kranzler. This will be followed by a festive Shabbat evening dinner and a kumzitz led by Elli Kranzler, interspersed with Rabbinic stories and songs. It will be an inspiring evening, one that will long linger in the memories of those attending. Dr. Kranzler will lead the Shabbat morning services in the Upstairs Minyan for Shacharit and in the Main Sanctuary for Musaf.

This program has been dedicated and partially funded by Charlie Gelfenstein in memory of his wife Marilyn z”l, a woman inspired by Jewish music and to whom the words, “Aishes Chayil” are most appropriate and provide a proper tribute.

Once again this year, more than 200 men and women have been studying the 6 sections of the Talmud Bavli and will complete all the tractates in time to join in a massive siyum and celebration in February. This year, we look forward to welcoming Rabbi Dr. Aharon Adler from Jerusalem, Israel; educator, lecturer, pulpit Rabbi, and a member of the IDF. The siyum program includes a special memorial prayer for all those members of Congregation Torah Ohr who passed away during the previous year.

DR. IRA EPSTEIN “Jerusalem of Gold: The Birth and Development of a Song” Two years ago we introduced this event, a video-lecture series given by Dr. Ira Epstein, who has fascinated his audiences in Florida and New York with his in-depth presentations on a multitude of personalities and subjects. This year, his subject is “Jerusalem of Gold: The Birth and Development of a Song”. The presentation this year is being given in loving memory of a dear friend, Esta Shepetofsky Kranzler. This spring marks the 53rd anniversary of “Yerushalim Shel Zahav”. Composed by Naomi Shemer for the Israeli Music Festival on May 15, 1967. Discover how the song grew from an initial 2 verse version to its present 4 verses. Learn about the development and meaning of the song’s text and its many historical, Talmudic, and Biblical allusions. Hear about Shemer’s startling deathbed confession to Gil Aldema that her song “Jerusalem of Gold” was derived from the melody of a Basque lullaby. This lecture will present archived recording and videos of the song, and will examine the question of plagiarism in music.

At Congregation Torah Ohr, The Hattie Thum Women’s Tehillim Group has been dedicated by Sheryle and Ted Spar in memory of Sheryle’s mother, Hetcha Yehudis bas Yehoshua Binyomin, a woman who truly valued the words of Tehillim. She lived in Century Village and was the founder of the Tehillim Group. Our Tehillim Group meets every Sunday morning throughout the year in the West Wing. You can bring a private list of names of the people for whom you are saying Tehillim. We invite all women in our Shul community to join us.

WOMEN’S ROSH CHODESH DAVENING First Day of Rosh Chodesh

The Ruth Fruchter/ Berdie Schiffenbauer Women's Amen Rosh Chodesh Group celebrates Rosh Chodesh with beautiful davening. We meet on the first day of Rosh Chodesh; however, when Rosh Chodesh falls on Shabbat we do not meet that month. We have festive davening with Hallel led by Terri Farkas or Karen Greene. We always have a D’var Torah that is given by one of the participants. We also have refreshment sponsors which enables us to serve coffee and pastries. This sponsorship is a wonderful opportunity to recognize a yahrzeit or a special occasion in your life.
