FROM OUR RABBI

I was thinking about the

Kever Avot service for

our congregation, that

takes place on the

Sunday between Rosh

Hashanah and Yom

Kippur and the prayers

that we offer in

remembrance of our

loved ones. Personally,

my favorite prayer of

remembrance is the one

below.

“There is no replacing a person of wisdom

There are mines for sliver,

And places where gold is refined.

Iron is taken from the earth,

And copper is smelted from the rock.

But where can wisdom be found?

And where is the source of understanding?

There is no replacing a person of wisdom”

[After Job 28:1-2, 12]

The prayer itself in essence forces us to focus on

what is truly important in life and the legacy that our

loved ones and eventually we, will leave behind.

The prayer reminds us that gold, silver and other

precious materials are only physical in nature and

they come and go depending on our luck in life.

However, a person’s wisdom remains with them all

the days of their lives. Not only this, but one’s

wisdom is often transmitted to others and thus lives

on indefinitely even after that person is long gone.

I know that the worldly wisdom concerning

family, friendships and loyalty that my grandmother

departed me will live on within my family for many

years to come.

Since wisdom is so important and central to our

lives, we must ask ourselves what is wisdom?

Judaism defines four parameters of wisdom.

The first Traditional paragon of wisdom is

Solomon, for Solomon came to replace his father

David as the king. Eventually Solomon

accomplished what his father was not able to, and

that was the building of the first Temple.

In I Kings 2:6, we read the following verse. “Do

therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his

hoary head go down to She’ol in peace”

Biblical commentators came to understand this verse

as a commandment to Solomon—that commandment

being to use his wisdom for good and not to let that

wisdom slip away towards She’ol (biblical version of

hell). Solomon in the end did use his wisdom in the

building of the First Temple and the Children of

Israel prospered because of it.

The second paragon of wisdom deals with

understand and implementing justice among thy

people. In I Kings 3: 9: we read, “Give therefore thy

servant an understanding heart to judge thy people,

that I may discern between good and evil.” Here

we can interpret wisdom as the ability and

knowledge to judge an individual on the merits of

each case and not based on a person’s standing in

society. The Bible in this verse is telling us that

there should be no difference between a wealthy

person who can afford the best lawyers in the

country, and a destitute individual who is

appointed a court attorney. Judaism demands that

each individual be afforded the same

opportunities for their defense under the law.

The third form of wisdom according to

traditional Judaism is, encyclopedic knowledge.

We read in I kings 5:14, “And there came of all

people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all

kings of the earth, who has heard his wisdom”

Here wisdom is the capability to learn from

any situation, any culture or any man, as well as

the ability to pass on that knowledge to others.

The importance of learning from others and

passing on that knowledge is reinforced in Pirket

Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) “Who is wise? One

who learns from all persons . . .” (Pirket Avot 4:1)

Finally the fourth definition of wisdom talks

about a leaders ability to work for the betterment

of all peoples. This we learn from I Kings 5:21

“And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the

words of Solomon, he rejoiced greatly, and said,

Blessed is the Lord this day, who has given to

David a wise son over this great people.”

Solomon was known to be revered for his

leadership ability and his work on behalf of all of

his people.

From these four examples we can conclude that

wisdom is the ability to learn and use this

knowledge fairly, justly and for the betterment of

the whole. To be wise is to understand where we

came from and where we are going, and hopefully

the ability to help not only ourselves but also

others along the way.

Having learned what Judaism teaches us about

wisdom and having become a better person due to

the wisdom of my grandmother, I now have found

even more meaning in the prayer that I quoted

above and which I recite at every funeral.

It is my hope that each and every one of us will

be able to remember the wisdom of our loved

ones who have passed away and to surround

ourselves with those who are wise today, for if we

are able to do this then our lives will truly be

enriched.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT

On behalf of myself and the Board of Directors, we want to wish

everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

I have been president for less than 4 months and these are the

questions I am asked;

Have you started counting the days till the end of your term?

How do you deal with all those difficult people?

Why would you want to be president?

Isn’t it a thankless job?

Well let me start by saying, No, I am not counting the days, there

is still so much to accomplish and I hope I don’t run out of time.

How do you deal with all those difficult people?

What difficult people? – all of us are a little difficult but we all

care so much about the synagogue that we want our opinion

heard.

Why would I want to be president?

I would like to answer this question by posing a question.

Why should our synagogue matter to us? For me, both these

questions have the same answer – Jewish Continuity.

Isn’t it a thankless job?

I do not think of the presidency as a job. To me it is an honor and

privilege to be able to do this, and I am fortunate to have a terrific

leadership team and such a strong and vibrant community that

helps me and makes me look good being the president, or as

some of you call me the SHAH.

A lot of hard work goes into making sure our synagogue is a

comfortable, welcoming, safe environment for you, and I would

like to recognize some very important people that help make this

happen:

Our dedicated clergy: Rabbi Bloom and Cantor Abrams

Kaikov thanks for all you do, and by the way Mazel Tov to

Cantor and Mordechai. If you have not heard by now Cantor is

pregnant.

Our incredible office staff: Michael Linn our Executive

Director, JoAnn, Suzie, Peppe, Maria, Gabriel, and Tony.

If you spend any time here at all, and as president I do, you

cannot deny that this place is bustling with life. We are blessed

with a great professional team and so many volunteers that give

of themselves to make sure this is so.

As president, you begin to notice things you may not have

noticed before. I notice these things in the silence, at night after a

board meeting, as we're the last to leave the building. Our shul is

alive too. This building is the framework, just as our bones are

the framework for our bodies. Just as a body has many systems

at work functioning automatically, without a second thought, so

does our shul. It takes a lot of people, time and money to make

our shul work.

I think of how important it is for all of us that this shul

maintains its vitality for our children and their children and their

children’s children. For this High Holiday appeal, I asked you to

give a little chai for the future. For l'dor v'dor - that these

moments, these life cycle events, can continue to grow and

Our Condolences

flourish within our community. I asked that you join me and the

Board of Directors and support this year long Chai on Life

celebration. From $18 to $18,000, the number is not important.

Every dollar is a breath of life to the shul, every time you say “yes”

to volunteering, the heart of this shul beats stronger.

You will notice this Chai on Life theme in our programs. Your

presence and participation is key to making this year a success.

You can continue to bring life to this congregation by joining us at

services and at our programs. We have so many different programs

available. Some of these programs include:

Rockin’ Ruach

House of schmooze

Film series

Jerusalem movie at Imax

Purim ball

Congregational Trip to Israel

Sunday School programs for the children

Ladies Auxiliary programs

Men’s club programs

Shabbat with Chaverim

Plus, if you are fan of working outside, have we got the garden for

you - Gan Ahavath Sholom. If you have not stopped by to see the

garden, please do so, and contact Marty Herman if you have any

question.

Please pick up a flyer that gives you a list of the upcoming

programs. With all the programs that we have it should not be hard

for you to find something you like and to participate in it.

This year of Chai is not only for the continued vitality of OUR

synagogue and community, but for the ripple effect we can cause in

the world by celebrating the gift of chai (the gift of LIFE) that we

are blessed with each day.

Please make sure that your pledge has been paid, or if you were

not able to make a pledge earlier, do so now.

FROM OUR EXECUTIVE

DIRECTOR

I am fortunate in being able to speak to

my father every day; and Pat is able to

speak to both her mother and father

daily. Our fathers are veterans of

World War II and have stories to tell,

all it takes is a little nudging. All three

of our parents are in their nineties and

are beginning to exhibit some signs of

frailty and forgetfulness. I am one that

does not hide feelings, and I remind my father that I am grateful

for his guidance, direction and understanding. My dad and I did

not always agree on the choices I made or the activities I

engaged in, but he was always there and he was always my

father and the love we share remains strong. I believe that it

continues to grow.

Too often we forget the importance of letting our family

members and our friends know how much we care and

appreciate them. It does not take much to say thank you for

being there, or to say I love you.

We have just finished asking God for forgiveness of our sins

and promises that we were not able to complete. We had the

chance during services to consider the prayers, listen to

speeches and to acknowledge relatives and friends. Did you

remember too, to say hello to the new face that you

encountered? I know how important it is to feel welcomed into

a new family, and our congregation is truly a family. Extend

yourself to at least one person that you did not know, remember

to express your positive feelings to your friends, and don’t

forget to call your parents and your children. Be the first one to

call, and not wait for the phone to ring. Our time on this planet

is short, enjoy every moment, take a few minutes out of each

week to attend a service or one of our many programs and

acknowledge members of your extended family.

Coming Spring 2015

by Cantor Shoshana

Abrams Kaikov

As I reflect on the past year and

look ahead to the new, I am overwhelmed with a great sense

of gratitude for so many things: the blessing of being a part

of the CAS community, the gift of my marriage to my

b’shert, the privilege of love and health, family and a warm

circle of friends. Many of you have probably already noticed

my expanding waist-size, pale (and sometimes green)

complexion, and constant urge to sit down. If you have not

already heard, it is with great joy and excitement that I share

with you all that Mordecai and I will God-willing be

welcoming our first child into the world this upcoming

Spring.

It was just several weeks ago that Mordecai and I sat

down one evening to watch our wedding video that arrived

in the mail from Los Angeles, and as we delighted in the

sweet and heartfelt messages that our wedding guests left us

on our video, we could not help but smile as we listened to

Rabbi Zimelman’s message to us on our wedding day. He

said: “As we are commanded, be fruitful and multiply.”

And, so, we have taken this quite seriously.

Such a blessing of a whirlwind this past year has been, I

can hardly believe how much our lives have changed in such

a short time. And, come Springtime, our lives will be

changing even more drastically. As we have all shared

together in the high holy days here at CAS and now Sukkot,

Mordecai and I find ourselves dreaming of our traditions

embracing our child in these festive holidays in the years to

come. We even imagine what it will feel like to bless our

child at the Shabbat table each Friday night as we sit down

to a family meal together, and on the bima, beneath a

chuppah of tallitot at the end of Shabbat services each week.

In the Kedushah portion of the Amidah, we chant “L’dor

Va’dor Nagid Gadlecha – Through all generations we

declare Your (God’s) greatness” and I can’t help but have

these words flow through my mind even more than ever

now that Mordecai and I are expecting. We are so incredibly

excited to welcome our baby into the CAS community and

God-willing raise him/her surrounded by the love of this

wonderful family of families. We look forward to instilling

in our child a love of Torah and appreciation and honor for

our rich and beautiful tradition. Thank you, God, for

bringing us to this moment in time, and may we all share in

the gift of passing on our tradition, L’dor Va’dor.

2014-15 SHOWTIMES Film Series

Congregation Ahavath Sholom CONGREGATION AHAVATH SHOLOM has the coming year

planned for you! We hope you will enjoy the films planned for

showings on Sunday nights at the Shul!

The entire community is invited to the 2014-2015 SHOWTIMES

Film Series from November 2, 2014 through March 8, 2015. Six

films will be shown on Sundays at 6:30 PM with the exception of

Christmas Day when our film will be shown at 3:30 pm as

Christmas falls this year on a Thursday.

The 2014-2015 SHOWTIMES Series films have been carefully

chosen to interest everyone. Moderators will lead the discussions

after each film. There is no cost, the films are our gift to the

community and the popcorn and cold drinks are complimentary! A

special "Thank You" to the Jewish Federation of Fort Worth and

Tarrant County for supporting our CAS 2014-2015 SHOWTIMES

Film Series. Without their help, we would not be able to proceed.

Our 2014-2015 SHOWTIMES Film Series will open on Sunday,

November 2, 2014, at 6:30 pm, with THE OTHER SON, a

moving and provocative tale of two young men—one Israeli, the

other Palestinian—who discover they were accidentally switched at

birth, and the complex repercussions facing them and their

respective families. This film should generate an interesting

discussion and hope many of you will attend this opening film.

The second film in our series, TAILOR OF PANAMA, an

espionage thriller set amidst the controversy of the handover of the

Panama Canal from America to Panama in late 1999, starring

Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Rush, Jamie Lee Curtis and Daniel

Radcliffe, will be shown on Sunday, November 23 at 6:30 pm.

This film is about the political situation in Panama and is based on

John LeCarre’s popular novel of the same title. Vicky and Sal

Mitrani have agreed to lead the post-film discussion about Jewish

life in another culture. They moved to the U.S. from Cuba and we

look forward to their hearing their stories.

On Christmas Day, Thursday — December 25 at 3:30 pm, we will

show the film, THE FRISCO KID. This is a feel-good family film

starring Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford and is directed by Robert

Aldrich. Come watch the film and spend a wonderful holiday

afternoon with us!

Did you know that a Jewish kid from New York scored the first

basket in the NBA? THE FIRST BASKET, scheduled for Sunday,

January 18, 2015 at 6:30 pm, is a documentary which follows

the little-known history of Jews and basketball at the beginning of

the 20th century. This film will be sponsored by the CAS Men’s

Club, and in the true spirit of basketball, hotdogs and cold drinks

will be served as well as popcorn.

On Sunday, February 8 at 6:30 pm, ZAYTOUN. In this movie, set

in Beirut, 1982, a young Palestinian refugee helps an Israeli fighter

pilot escape from PLO captivity because he wants to visit his

ancestral family home. En route through war-torn Lebanon their

relationship develops into a close bond. This film gives way to long

discussions.

On Sunday, March 8 at 6:30 pm, THE JEWISH CARDINAL

will be shown. It is the amazing true story of Jean-Marie Lustiger,

son of Polish-Jewish immigrants, who maintained his cultural

identity as a Jew even after converting to Catholicism at a young

age, and later joining the priesthood. Quickly rising within the

ranks of the Church, Lustiger was appointed Archbishop of Paris

by Pope jean Paul II—and found a new platform to celebrate his

dual identity as a Catholic Jew, earning him both friends and

enemies from either group. When Carmelite nuns settle down to

build a convent within the cursed walls of Auschwitz, Lustiger

found himself a mediator between the two communities—and

might be forced at last to choose his side. A very interesting story.

We will start a new six-month film series in beginning in April

2015, so be on the lookout for the films in the new series. What a

pleasure, picking out films to bring to our community for your

enjoyment!

WE HOPE YOU WILL LOVE THE SELECTIONS made

by our 2014-2015 SHOWTIMES Series Film Committee and we

look forward to sharing the movies with you. Thanks to our

committee members Michal Bloom, Liz Chesser, Bootsie Coggan,
