Well, I’m standing on a corner in Winslow, ArizonaAnd such a fine sight to seeIt’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed FordSlowing down to take a look at me.

Why is it that you can recite a verse from the middle of a song, and my bet is that most of you will know the song, and are probably humming it now. The power of music!

To many, silence is preferred to music but not me. Whether it be a wedding, a funeral or a gathering of people, music helps to relax you and immediately brings back memories. It is a mender of hearts and moods and adds dimension to any event. Power to the person controlling the knob on the stereo, or these days the UE-Boom. Like the man holding the Stop / Go sign in a line of traffic, you are the person who controls the event. Get it wrong and everyone moves on; get it right and you become an instant folk hero. You are the puppeteer and the people are your puppets.

I love the subtlety of music. Walk into an Indian, Italian, or French restaurant and there will be music floating in the background setting the scene. The pictures on the wall of the Ligurian seaside come alive with the sounds of ‘O Sole Mio’ and ‘Torna a Surriento’. My mind and my palate salivate on the intricate and customary sounds of that nation. The food, the music and the wine are all in bed together feasting on the occasion.

I was fortunate to live through decades of great music. There wasn’t a week that went by without another iconic song entering the airways. From RocknRoll, RnB, Disco, Punk, Heavy Metal, Reggae, Funk, Pop Music, etc, we had a huge choice. In fact, we were spoilt for choice. These days, you only have to stick on an old ABBA song and watch the kids get up and dance. Who would believe that ABBA first appeared back in 1974 with “Waterloo” (there you go, humming again) and would slot in between Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley on the local radio station. And the music lives on. Can anyone believe that the Rolling Stones are still performing. Formed in 1962 their first big hit was “I can’t get no,

Satisfaction” and they are still singing this song 58 years later. Bands like ‘The Who’, ‘Earth, Wind and Fire’, ‘Chicago’ and ‘Steely Dan’ are to this day still playing to live audiences. Grapes Catch Alight in the MicrowaveAbout 8 years ago a viral video clip showed a fireball when a grape was put in the microwave. They couldn’t explain the phenomena until March this year and it appears this fruit fireball is a result of loose electrons that cluster and form plasma when grapes get hot. Ummm – can the military make something of this???

Japanese Ninja ShortageThis is one for us oldies (like me). Do you remember watching Samurai in black and white back in the 1960’s and marvelling at the exploits of the Ninjas? The claimed birthplace of the Ninja, the Japanese city of Iga, is suffering from a Ninja shortage. This in spite the fact that they’re willing to pay salaries as high as US$85,000 for Ninjas willing to take on the job of performing at their annual Ninja festival.

Did you know it takes an average of 21 seconds to pee?No one will blame you if you’ve never bothered to time yourself on the toilet. But you may be interested to know that researchers found that most mammals weighing more than 3kg take 21 seconds to pee. Apparently, this oddly consistent time is due to the fact that the urethra is “appropriately scaled” to be a “flow-enhancing device.” And apparently, the perfectly enhanced flow takes 21 seconds to complete. What blows me away is people get their doctorates based on these types of studies. Really??

NATURAL or GREEN HERBICIDES - THE HIDDEN FACTSThis article arose from a question from a customer that wanted to spray out a whole paddock – grass and weeds - but wanted a natural herbicide solution as they had a horse that was sensitive to chemicals. Fair enough.

We have always been keen on offering some more “green” herbicide alternatives but our criteria are quite simple.

• They must work

• They need to be reasonably cost- effective

• They need to be genuinely not harmful

The reason we haven’t done it to date is that we couldn’t find one. So I put my Sherlock Holmes hat on and did a bit more research and here are some facts.

Before I move onto the so called “natural” and “green” alternatives let’s put up our Glyphosate 540 as a test product.

RAINBOW & BROWN GLYPHOSATE 540 This has to bear the HSNO 9.1B toxic to the aquatic environment symbol. Basically don’t let it go into streams or lakes. You would have to be a bloody idiot to do this anyway.

HSNO code:

• 9.1B (Ecotoxic in the aquatic environment).

FATTY ACID BASED HERBICIDES*

or Promoted by the marketing guys as being natural solutions or “organic weedkillers” and “less toxic than table salt” and other fancy marketing phrases to make you feel like you are keeping your kids, pets and the environment safe. Yep they come from a natural product. Although the fatty acids used can be derived from many plants the most common one these days is Palm oil and this is being hammered by the environmentalists because of the native deforestation to allow for planting of palm. Another case of not understanding the unintended consequences.

So, using the (soon to be replaced with yet another system) HSNO codes the warnings above are:

• 3.1C (Moderately flammable liquid)

• 6.3A (Skin irritation)

• 6.4A (Eye irritation)

• 6.5B (Skin sensitization)

• 8.3A (Causes serious eye damage)

• 9.1B (Toxic to the aquatic environment)

VINEGAR PRODUCTS

A popular home remedy but marketed as natural and green products by a number of companies. One well-known company is marketing a blend of vinegar and citric acid as a “bio-herbicide” because it is made using natural vinegar. The hazard ratings are based on this product but 10% acetic acid strength vinegars are much the same.

• 6.1E (Acute toxicity oral, acute toxicity dermal)

• 6.9B (Specific target organ toxicity – repeated exposure

• 8.1A (Corrosive to metal)

• 8.2C (Corrosive to dermal tissue)

• 8.3A (Eye corrosive – corrosive to ocular tissue

• 9.1D (slightly harmful to the aquatic environment)

• 9.3C (substance harmful to terrestrial vertebrates)

Really only suitable for spot spraying and it acts by burning the weeds/grass so is acting as a contact herbicide. This means it doesn’t translocate into the roots so won’t kill the roots. Many cheaper white vinegars are just diluted acetic acid and not naturally fermented but to be effective you really need to be using a 10% strength. Normal household vinegar is around 4%. A very expensive solution and especially at 10% not really that safe either.

SALT (common salt or sodium chloride)

Not usually used on its own but often used in conjunction with vinegar-based approaches. I have thrown this in to help put everything in perspective.

• 6.1E (Acute toxicity oral)

• 6.4A (Eye irritation)

Everyone wants to be gentle on the environment. It is not just the domain of the ardent greenies and all things being even close to equal we would use products that are more gentle on the environment and less toxic for us and our families but things are not always as they seem!!!

CLEANING OF SPRAY TANKSWhy Bother? There are many reasons why you should religiously clean your spray tanks and lines between products.

• To avoid product hardening which can come off in subsequent sprays and block lines and filters

• To avoid corrosion or other chemical damage to gear.

• To ensure there are no residues of one chemical in another.

For instance, if you want to spray out a paddock with glyphosate and then spray another paddock with seaweed, you don’t want glyphosate mixed in with the seaweed or in your lines. The first product out of the line, in this instance, is likely to be glyphosate and coming out at the normal rate to kill. After that you would have a weaker solution but it still may be enough to cause damage.

Cleaning ObjectivesWhen cleaning your tank and line you have two main objectives.

• Diluting the active ingredient below levels that will cause damage, or removing herbicide totally.

• Deactivating any herbicide.

Where to Clean upClean up in an area where:

• Access by livestock, pets and children is restricted.

• There is no risk of run-off into streams or ponds.

• You avoid contamination of crops.

The ideal is to spray back in the area recently sprayed but if this is not possible waste ground is ok as long as you can prevent run-off into streams or ponds and you have diluted sufficiently that the effective application rate is less than the recommended rate on the products label.

Cleaning ProductsThere are a wide range of cleaning product available ranging from domestic to commercial cleaners. Commercial cleaners, apart from cleaning will often deactivate some herbicides by raising the pH. Other herbicides are deactivated using chlorine based bleaches which also raise the pH.

AGAIN – ALWAYS CHECK THE SPECIFIC PRODUCT LABEL

WARNING: Ammonia or products containing ammonia such as many fertlisers should NEVER be mixed with chlorine based cleaners and sanitisers.

Dangerous chlorine gas can be produced.

Good Cleaning Practice• IN ALL CASES READ THE LABEL AND AT A MINIMUM

ADHERE TO THE EQUIPMENT CLEANING AND DISPOSAL REQUIREMENTS ON THE LABEL. Although many of the principles are the same for all herbicides some specific herbicides have specific requirements so it is really important you read the label. If you don’t have the original container with you all our product labels are available on our website.

• Refer to NZ Standard 8409:2004 – Management of Agrichemicals. If you don’t have a copy you can buy a copy here:

o https://shop.standards.govt.nz/catalog/8409:2004(NZS)/scope

o The full text is available here but it is not formatted so it is not an easy read. https://archive.org/stream/nzs.8409.2004/nzs.8409.2004_djvu.txt

• Check your gear carefully.

o Clean or replace screens.

o Check for cracked hoses which can catch residues.

o Same with places like U or L-bends etc., where residues can accumulate and be trapped.

o Wash and clean the inside of any lids and the inside of the tank at the top. This often gets overlooked but product will slosh up into these areas.

o Pay more attention to plastic tanks which are generally harder to clean than stainless tanks.

• Never leave your gear sitting around dirty overnight. Even if you are spraying with the same chemical the next day you need to flush the spray system at a minimum. If other chemicals or products will be used then a proper clean is required.

• Empty the tank and rinse really well on the inside of the tank with water.

• Spray water through the spray nozzles for 1-2 minutes.

• Fill the tank with water and add cleaning agents if required. Refer to the product label or standard NZS8409:2004 to establish what, if any, cleaning products are required or recommended.

• Spray the cleaning solution through the lines and the nozzles back into the spray tank if possible and leave overnight if practical. If not leave for at least 2 hours to allow the cleaning products to work.

• Empty the tank – spraying through the spray nozzles and then rinse the tanks and lines with clean water.

BLACK NIGHTSHADEBlack Nightshade – Solanum nigrumDESCRIPTIONNote: Black nightshade is often mistakenly called deadly nightshade. It’s not deadly nightshade … see ‘Toxicity’ below. Black nightshade is a summer annual and can be a short-lived perennial. It can be variable in size and form, but most often grows as a tall, upright plant reaching about 70cm in height. Large plants will typically become extensively branched and can carry a lot of foliage and consequently compete successfully with crop and pasture species for sunlight. The plants normally die off with the late autumn frosts. The leaves are dark green, sometimes with purple edges, oval shaped and pointed at the tips, and are up to 12cm long by 7cm wide. The stems are often distinctly purple, especially late in the season. Mature plants support distinctive bunches of berries 7-10mm in diameter, initially green in colour and turning to black when ripe. When green the berries are a serious problem in pea crops because they can easily be harvested with the peas and are hard to distinguish visually. Flowers appear between October and May, and are generally white, occasionally pale mauve, 10-12mm in diameter, with fi ve pointed petals and a central yellow column. DistributionBlack Nightshade is common throughout most of NZ, although less so in the southern half of the South Island. It appears most often in arable land, waste areas, disturbed pastures and gardens. The ripe berries are eaten by birds and it is by this means (bird droppings) that the plant is most readily spread. ToxicityBlack nightshade is not particularly poisonous, although the unripe green berries may be mildly toxic to children, and there are observations of calves being ‘drunk’ from eating black nightshade that has become more palatable as it dies off after spraying. Its undeserved reputation for toxicity is largely due to its being regularly mistaken for deadly nightshade. Deadly nightshade is actually very rare in NZ, and exists only in very limited numbers in locations close to Christchurch. Deadly nightshade (also called belladonna) is indeed highly toxic: Emperor Augustus was poisoned by his missus with belladonna, and Macbeth used it to poison various Englishmen. Small-fl owered nightshadeThere is one other species, small-fl owered nightshade, that is visually very similar to black nightshade and occurs in similar situations although it is not so widely distributed. However as its characteristics and control measures are virtually identical, the two can for practical purposes be considered the same.

CULTIVATION CONTROLBlack nightshade is controlled by cultivation where that is an option. However it does commonly appear in new pasture and crops, when other control measure must be used. HERBICIDE CONTROLBlack nightshade is readily controlled by many herbicides, so the most suitable product to use is generally determined by the situation and the need to avoid or minimise damage to pasture and crops. However, there is evidence of black nightshade resistance to some chemicals, particularly chlorsulfuron, metsulfuron (MSF600) and the triazine family of herbicides. PASTE OR SWAB You can use any of the Glyphosate based Cut’n’Paste gels. Original, Bamboo Buster, Glimax, Lawn Raider or Roll on. Apply the gels on the underside of the leaves or if the stems are thick enough cut the stem close to the ground and apply to the cut surface and a little down the stem.SPRAYWaste AreasGlyphosate products are very effective when used in situations where collateral damage to grass is not a concern. • Glyphosate 360 at 1L/100L• Glyphosate 540 at 670ml/100L• Granny at 450g/100LNew Pasture• MCPB or products combining MCPB plus MCPA,

applied by boom spray at 4L-6L per hectare, are effective against black nightshade at the seedling stage, and will not damage the new grasses or clover. These products will also provide reasonable suppression of plants past the seedling stage.

Established Pasture• MCPA and 2,4-D are often used to control larger

plants in established pasture, but this will damage clover.

• GrassMate at 60ml per 10 litres of water, applied to actively growing plants by spot spraying, will provide control but will temporarily remove clover from the sward.

Clover, lucerne, chicory, maize• Decision at 50g/Ha, applied before 4th leaf stage.

For larger black nightshade, increase rate to 65g/ha. For best results add BioWet crop oil at 500ml/100L water.

WEED WIPER If above the level of your pasture weed wiping with Glyphosate is also a good option. You should end up applying the following mixes at about 10L/Ha on light infestations and 20L/HA on heavy infestations. • Glyphosate 360 – 5L/100L water• Glyphosate 540 – 3.4L/100L water• Granny – 2.25kg/100L water

• Rainbow & BrownRainbow & Brown Ltd is a privately-owned NZ company operating from our factory in Rotorua for more than 20 years. We have customers all over New Zealand, including farmers, horticulturalists, spray contractors, nurseries, commercial and private gardeners, and many other businesses. Our products are sold direct, which is why our prices are so attractive … it is effectively the “wholesale” price, direct from the manufacturer.

• PeopleThe directors of Rainbow & Brown have been involved in the NZ agricultural chemicals business for over 20 years. If you phone us, your most likely contact will be Rachael, our office manager (and the real heart of the company!). If you call in to see us, you’ll likely also meet Clinton, the factory manager.

• OrderingYou can order anytime by phone, online at rainbowbrown.co.nz, or by fax (yes we still have a fax number), or e-mail. If you call on the freephone number, you may at times get an answering machine. That means we’re already on the phone, or it may be after office hours. Please just leave your name and number, and we’ll soon call you back. Or if we’ve already got all your details, just leave your order (with your name and phone number) on the machine.

• DeliveryWe send your order within 24 hours. Delivery is usually 1 to 4 days. If it hasn’t arrived after that time, call us immediately so we can track it down for you.Delivery of orders of 60 litres or less will normally be to your door, including rural delivery addresses. However, delivery of larger orders may be to the nearby freight depot or drop-off point we will arrange with you when you place your order.

• Factory & Office HoursIf you want to collect your order from our Rotorua factory, you’re welcome. We are at 68A Tallyho Street. Open hours are 8.30 to 4.30, Monday to Friday.

• PaymentWe’ll send your invoice with the product, or email it if you prefer. Payment is due on 20th following month, and you can send a cheque or use direct payment toa/c No: 123155-0066374-00. The bank account number is also on both your invoice and your statement. We send statements out in the first week of each month.

• Referral RewardsWord-of-mouth is the best advertising, so if you recommend us to someone who then becomes a new Rainbow & Brown customer and mentions your name, we’ll thank you with a $10 discount off each different product you get in your next order.SMALL PRINT: The discount doesn’t apply to products on special.

• WebsiteCheck out our website for full details, current pricing and labels of all our products, plus Safety Data Sheets, and a small library of useful reference articles. You can also download from the free Weed Files library. It’s at www.rainbowbrown.co.nz

• Certified Handler Certificates You do NOT need a Certified Handler certificate to purchase any current Rainbow & Brown product except for Cobber herbicide. You do need a certificate to apply some products in a “wide dispersive manner” (i.e. by boom spray), or apply it commercially (i.e. you’re a contractor), or over water (i.e. you’re a dickhead).

• PricesWhile we do our best in these newsletters and the website to provide accurate prices but genuine errors can be made and from in the 3 months from finalising one issue to you get the next issue new stock can land with different prices. Please check the price on the website as this will always be the most current and accurate pricing.
