Naked starlet in rugby club romp!
by Paul Martin, Director, Rainbow & Brown
CONFIRMED RUMOURSJUNE 2017RAINBOW & BROWN NEWSLETTER
You know it’s not true. You know that I’m not going to be saying anything at all about naked starlets. Probably not even anything about rugby. And yet here you are … just curious enough to see what I am going to say. Me too. I’ll start by asserting my rights as a member of the International League of Grumpy Old Men (ILGOM). We blokes who have reached a certain age are entitled – actually, expected – to complain about annoying new things, and from where we stand nearly everything is new. And literally everything is annoying. The particular new thing I’m ranting about today is what’s now known as Click Bait. It involves using intentionally misleading sensationalist headlines in order to attract readership of whatever guff follows. Tabloid newspapers (and aren’t they all tabloids now?) have always been prepared to stoop to shock-horror headlines when desperate. But the art of doing so has now been taken to new heights of sleaze and deception by the authors of online content. If they can just get you to click on a story to open it, they care not one whit about whether you laugh, cry or shoot yourself as a result of what follows. They get paid not for readership, but for clicks. I assure you, it’s true. Clicks. That is their sole product, and they don’t even try to deny it: they boast about their clicks. They measure each other by the size of their clicks. YouTube is a particularly blatant example. I recently saw (and I clicked, dammit) a headline that said: “Tourists Near-Death Elephant Encounter!!! MUST SEE!!!” The video showed a small car stationary on a road in an Africa wildlife reserve. An old elephant bull strolled out of the bush and wandered toward the car looking confused
and mildly irritated (so he was very likely a member of ILGOM). He reached the car, waved the tip of his trunk vaguely in the wide-eyed occupants’ direction, sniffed at them, idly flapped his ears a bit, and then ambled off into the bushes across the road. And that was it: a near-death encounter. Had the author been present when I realized I’d wasted two minutes and seven seconds of my remaining precious lifespan on his bullshit, I might have been moved to show him what a near-death encounter actually is. Alas, he would have not understood my anger, and would have gone off in the ambulance protesting that his video had been clicked 1.5 million times and is therefore brilliant. Less blatant, but no less infuriating, is the online edition of even the most venerable of newspapers. I once loved the Sydney Morning Herald for its excellent journalism and its lofty (by Australian standards) editorial principles. This was up until around 1990 or so, after which things began to slide. But I continued to read it because I wasn’t yet a member of ILGOM. Now I live far away and can read it only online. And what a dismal, depressing, infuriating 15 minutes I enjoy as a result, at my computer each morning. There now appears to be no thoughtful journalism present at all, and the lofty principles have fallen unto dust. Instead I see headlines like: “Do You Make These 5 Social Mistakes?” and “Ten Things to Hate about Air Travel”, and “Naked Starlet in Rugby Club Romp”. Membership forms for the ILGOM are available from the website www.5thingsihateabouteverything.com Join us! It’s great fun! Just click the
link! You know you want to.

FIELDAYS SPECIALBuy three packs of Gibber growth promoter and save
$100. That’s enough to treat 90 hectares, at the lowest-ever cost of just $4.78 + GST per hectare.
What’s Gibber?Gibber is a proven natural growth promoter that boosts pasture growth, especially in early spring and late autumn. The boost can be up to 60% additional dry matter production. Pasture sward is denser, with less bare spots and much better pugging resistance.
How fast does it work?Extra growth becomes evident about 7 days after application (leave a small area untreated to see for yourself the remarkable difference). The boost effect on pasture growth then increases until its maximum effect about 21 days after application.
Is Gibber just for rotational grazing systems? No, although it does suit them because of its 3 weeks’ effective growth-boost cycle. But useful additional pasture growth can be achieved under any grazing system, and customers using less intensive grazing have still achieved very pleasing and cost-effective results. The ideal, however, is to apply Gibber within 2 days of fairly hard grazing.
What’s the ideal soil temperature range?Between 6°C and 18°C. And the maximum difference between treated and untreated pasture occurs when soil temp (and thus ‘normal’ growth rate) is at its lowest, i.e. just when you need it the most!
How often can you apply Gibber? In trials there was no discernible loss of growth response after three or four consecutive rotation applications.
What’s the ideal application method?Boom spray or rosette spray works best. Around 100L of water per hectare will allow uniform spray coverage.
Buy 3 x 270g packs (normally $596.85) for just $495.00, save over $100!

DECISION SPECIALDecision is clover-friendly, which makes it a great product to control buttercups – both annual and perennial types – in dairy pastures. Buttercups respond well to spring and early summer treatment, and a single annual application of Decision will normally give full-season control.Decision also controls many other weeds in pasture, including several that are not controlled by MCPA, MCPB and 2,4-D. Decision can be tank mixed with those herbicides if required. It’s a water-dispersible granule containing 800g/kg flumetsulam. It dissolves readily, and is easy and safe to handle. Annual Buttercups• 50g of Decision per hectare, applied pre-flowering Giant Buttercups• 60g of Decision per hectare, applied pre-floweringOther Weeds ControlledChickweed, Spurrey, Wild Radish, Hedge Mustard, Redroot, Cleavers, Nightshade, Fathen, Shepherd’s Purse, Mallow, Creeping Cress, Yellow Gromwell, Stinking Mayweed, Wireweed, Sorrel, Field Pansy, Henbit, Willow Weed, Oxeye Daisy.

GA200 for orchards & vineyards. Save $60!GA200 is a non-selective herbicide like glyphosate, but GA200 has limited systemic movement through a sprayed plant. So it affects only on those parts of a plant that are directly hit by the spray. That means you must ensure that target plants are completely sprayed. But there’s a big advantage: a bit of unintended contact via overspray onto a non-target plant is not going to kill it.
GA200, in addition to controlling more than 60 species of common weeds including virtually all the species found in orchards and vineyards, also kills clovers. Glyphosate is weak against clovers.
GA200 is fast acting. Visual effects on treated plants can appear as soon as just three days after spraying, in ideal growing conditions.
SPECIAL OFFER:20L (normally $598) now just $538 (save $60)
Price includes GST & delively. No limit per customer. Special ends 7th July 2017.
WINTER CLOSE-DOWN DATES It’s time for the annual winter close-down at Rainbow & Brown.
Our staff will be heading of for a lavish, expenses-paid holiday in a small adobe hut deep in the Sahara desert. They just love to follow the sun.
We will close at 4:00pm on Friday 7th July, & re-open at 9:00am on Monday 31st July.
So make sure that you order anything you’ll need by no later than 5th July. That’ll ensure we get your order away before the Friday, when the factory staff will all be very busy packing their buckets and spades.

Concentrated & Convenient2,4-D Granules is a concentrated 800g/kg amine formulation and the granules dissolve quickly and completely in water. The 10kg carton actually contains five individual 2kg foil bags, making handling and dispensing easy and accurate.
Amine not EsterBeing an amine formulation, 2,4-D Granules provides you with three big advantages over the commonly available liquid esters. First, it’s not volatile, meaning that when sprayed it does not form a lighter-than-air vapour than can unexpectedly drift off-site. Second, it does not have the pungent odour that makes handling the ester liquids an unpleasant experience. And third, the use period of made-up spray mixes is longer than the esters.
Minimal Clover DamageThis amine form of 2,4-D provides a better level of clover safety than other kinds of 2,4-D formulations. This makes it a great product for early removal of broadleaf weeds from new pastures.
Granule Efficiency and SafetyBeing a granule, this product is more concentrated (80% active) than liquids, easier and safer to handle, and is more convenient to accurately measure and dispense. It’s also less prone to spills, and much easier to clean up if it does spill.
What’s Controlled?2,4-D Granules controls thistles, ragwort and many other broadleaf weeds. It should be applied when the target weeds are at the seedling and rosette stage. However, it can be also tank mixed with flumetsulam (Decision) and clopyralid (Cobber) for control of mature, multi-crown and hard-to-kill weeds in one application.
Ragwort2,4-D Granules is the ideal product for spraying ragwort in the May to July period, when the plant is at its most susceptible, and when clover damage will be minimized due to less clover leaf being present in pastures.
ThistlesBoom spraying in late autumn and early winter with 2,4-D Granules will control autumn germinating thistles at their most vulnerable seedling stage. Early spring is also effective, as long as the thistles are still seedlings or small rosettes.
10kg Carton (contains 5 x 2kg foil bags)
$138 incl GST & delivery
Q. Winter Spraying?A. 2,4-D Granules!
Rainbow & Brown 2,4-D Granules controls broadleaf weeds in new and established pasture, and in cereals. It’s very effective
on autumn germinated weed seedlings. Especially thistles.

Bio Treat is actually a trio of products that are applied together in order to naturally produce high levels of available nitrogen in the soil. This Bio Treat system can be used either as a natural and complete alternative to Urea, or in conjunction with Urea to reduce Urea application by around 50%.Bio Treat N contains a nitrogen-producing bacteria called Azotobacter vinelandii. This is the core of the Bio Treat natural nitrogen generating system.
The three-product system is applied per hectare:
100ml Bio Treat N + 1L Bio Treat Digester + 20L Bio Treat HumateCost per hectare is $65
This treatment produces about 220 days of nitrogen-boosting activity (versus just a month or so for urea). Add to that the environmental and sustainability advantages,
and the fact that there is no post-effect growth slump, as happens with urea.
The third partner product is Bio Treat Humate, which is both a carbon source and a microbial food source for the nitrogen-producing azotobacter bacteria. Humates are recognised as the most productive input in sustainable agriculture. They comprise humic and fulvic acids, plus the carbon-rich ancient organic matter from which these powerful natural acids are derived.
The second product is Bio Treat Digester, which is another bacterial product, comprising Pseudomonas fluorescens, which cleans up the soil biological environment to allow the Bio Treat N bacteria to colonise prolifically. The digester bacteria consume any soil pathogen bacteria, and also digest organic trash and litter in the soil.
Silage Treat RB274 is a bacterial inoculant designed to maximise the quality of silage made from pasture and forage crops. It contains two of the highest-performing strains of live lactic acid producing bacteria, which quickly lowers the silage pH level. This results in improved conservation of plant sugars, and reduced degradation of protein content. That adds up to silage that is more nutritious, more palatable, and that can retain its quality
for longer in storage, even in adverse climate conditions. Each 50g sachet of Silage Treat RB274 soluble granules treats 50 tonnes of silage, and can be applied using either proprietary silage inoculant spray units, or conventional handgun spray setups.Contains a minimum of one hundred billion (1 x 1011) colony-forming units per gram, of the live bacterial strains Lactobacillus plantarum and Enterococcus faecium.
250g pack (contains 5 x 50g sachets) treats 250 tonnes of silage$295 incl GST and delivery

Seaweed Treat Extract FlakeThis is a water-soluble flake seaweed extract that acts as a natural bio-activator to stimulate microbial activity in the soil.
The increased soil microbial activity means that soil organic matter is more efficiently and quickly converted into plant-available nutrients, which produces more vigorous plant growth, stronger plants including root systems, and higher yields.
The seaweed used for the product is the species Ascophyllum nodosum, which is regarded as the king of seaweeds used for producing growth-promoting biological activity.
Apply 3-4 times annually to maintain optimum soil microbial activity. Boom or rosette spray at 300-400g/ha in water, hand spray at 5-10g per 100m2.
6kg carton (3 x 2kg bags)…$140 incl GST & delivery
Seaweed Treat Liquid KelpThis is a very concentrated natural biostimulant applied as a spray. It provides many minerals, nutrients and natural growth boosters, to promote vigorous sustained growth, root stimulation, and to enhance frost and stress resistance.
The product is suitable for use on pasture, crops and in horticulture, and it particularly suitable for use in sustainable biological agriculture systems.
The cold-composting process used in production means that the concentrate retains all the natural attributes of kelp including 70 minerals, 17 amino acids, 4 natural growth promoters, chelating agents and complex sugars.
It’s sprayed as a 1:20 dilution in water, using a handgun, knapsack or rosette/boom. Application can be made direct to prepared soil or as a foliar spray.

DESCRIPTION
Broom – Cytisus scoparius
Broom is a woody deciduous shrub with many branches of ridged green stems that have very sparse numbers of very small leaves. Indeed some stems can be entirely leafl ess.
It grows throughout New Zealand, and is most commonly found in and around riverbeds, on low fertility hill country and forest areas, as well as the margins of grazing land. It can form extremely dense thickets, and although it is not as spiny as gorse can still make movement very diffi cult or impossible for stock. It is tolerant of cold conditions, and can be readily found at high altitudes and southerly latitudes.
Broom has very attractive golden-yellow fl owers in spring (and sometimes later), which are followed by the emergence of explosive seed pods. The fl owering normally follows that of any gorse in the same locations, and can be distinguished at distance due to being a lighter yellow than the gorse fl owers.
The leaves, in addition to being both sparse and small, are trifoliate in form. They fall from the stems very easily.
There is a similar species, Montpellier broom, which is distinguished by having many more leaves and smaller fl owers.
MANUAL/MECHANICAL CONTROL
Small plants can be dug or grubbed out, but this should be done before fully-developed seed pods are present, to prevent accidental release of seeds onto the disturbed ground. Small bushes can also be slashed and the area cultivated, especially if heavy grazing can follow to clean up seedling growth.
Goats can also provide reasonable control of broom by grazing, especially smaller and seedling growth.
HERBICIDE CONTROL
Because of the scarcity of leaves on broom, there is generally less than ideal leaf area to receive and take up sprayed herbicides. This has led to reports of disappointing results with some sprays, including metsulfuron (e.g. MSF600). However, not everyone agrees with this, and many users report perfectly satisfactory results. Most of the reports are from the South Island, which could indicate a regional resistance of broom to that herbicide.
In all cases spraying is most effective at the time of maximum leaf cover. This usually occurs in spring and early summer.
Stump Swab:
Broom cut by chainsaws and scrub cutters will usually regrow from dormant buds on the stumps, so treatment of the stumps with herbicide is essential.
• MSF600 at 5g/L water swabbed onto fresh cut stumps.
Spray:
• Triclo at 300ml/100L water plus 100ml SuperWetter organosilicone penetrant, applied by handgun; or Triclo at 10L/Ha plus 2L SuperWetter in 400L water by aerial spray.
• GrassMate at 250ml/100L water plus 100ml SuperWetter organosilicone penetrant, applied by handgun; or GrassMate at 10L/Ha plus 2L SuperWetter in 400L water by aerial spray.
• MSF600 sprayed by handgun at 35g/100L water, plus 100ml SuperWetter, or by air at 300g/Ha MSF600 plus 2L AirWet LF in 400L water
• Glyphosate 360 sprayed by handgun at 1L/100L water plus 100ml SuperWetter, or Granny at 450g/100L water plus 100ml SuperWetter.

• Rainbow & BrownRainbow & Brown Ltd is a privately-owned NZ company. Our factory and office is in Rotorua. We’re now in our 17th year of operation, and have been growing strongly every year. We have customers all over New Zealand, including farmers, horticulturalists, spray contractors, nurseries, commercial and private gardeners, and many other businesses. Our products are sold direct, which is why our prices are so attractive … it is effectively the “wholesale” price, direct from the manufacturer.
• PeopleThe directors of Rainbow & Brown have been involved in the NZ agricultural chemicals business for over 20 years. They’re actively involved in the day-to-day running and building of the business. If you phone us, your most likely contact will be Rachael, our office manager (and the real heart of the company!). If you call in to see us, you’ll also meet Clinton, the factory manager.
• OrderingYou can order anytime by phone, online at rainbowbrown.co.nz, or by fax, e-mail or by letter. If you call on the freephone number, you may at times get an answering machine. That means we’re already on the phone, or doing something else. Or it may be after office hours (see below). Please just leave your name and number, and we’ll soon call you back. Or if we’ve already got all your details, just leave your order (with your name and phone number) on the machine.
• DeliveryWe send your order within 24 hours. Delivery will usually take between 1 and 4 days. If it hasn’t arrived after that time, call us immediately so we can track it down for you. Delivery of orders of 60 litres or less will normally be to your door, including rural delivery addresses. However, delivery of larger orders may be to the nearby freight depot or drop-off point we will arrange with you when you place your order.

• Approved Handler Certificates (EPA)You do NOT need an Approved Handler certificate to purchase any current Rainbow & Brown product except for Cobber herbicide. To apply MSF600, GrassMate, MCPA, Ranger or Triclo in a “wide dispersive manner” (i.e. by boom spray), or apply it commercially (i.e. you’re a contractor), or over water (i.e. you’re a dickhead), you DO need an Approved Handler certificate to apply it, but you DO NOT need a certificate to buy it. You need an Approved Handler certificate to buy Cobber herbicide or to apply it in any circumstances.
