A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR
Merry Christmas!
Christmas is a season celebrating God’s presence with us and care for us.
The reason we “Go, Tell It on the Mountain” is that so many folks feel
alone and vulnerable in the cold and darkness of this time of the year, and
in this time of economic, political, social and cultural uncertainty. Funny,
those same things were true when “Gentle Mary Laid Her Child” in a
manger.
Once we have answered the question “What Child Is This?” we ask in
awe, why would God do that? We can only conclude that God cares so
much for us creatures, for the challenges of life on this earth and desires
so much that we be in close relationship throughout all eternity, that
God snuck up on us to embrace us and shield us and walk us from
darkness into light, from anxiety to joy. “God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen
(and Ladies), Let Nothing You Dismay!”
We, the children of light and the saints of Cornerstone, are privileged,
like the shepherds at the first Christmas, to have the truth pointed out to
us and be able to examine the evidence. Once we’ve concluded that the
“Angels We Have Heard on High” were telling not just the truth, but the
Good News, we are the ones who are in a position to tell the lonely, the
anxious, the vulnerable, the doubting, the hoping, the longing world what
we know. For the next month, “There’s a Song in the Air, There’s a Star
In the Sky” and it is ours to point out the star, sing along with the song
and be almost angelic as we bring not just hope, but confidence and
joyous faith to everyone we meet. More than gifts and cookies, Jesus is
the answer to the concerns of the world, and we are the gifts that will
make the most difference in our neighbors’ Christmas.

Cornerstone Quilters
Red Bird Mission and Clinic has been providing ministries in the
Appalachian Mountains since 1921. They faithfully serve the people
in this area through their ministries of: education, health and well-
ness, community outreach, economic opportunity and community
housing improvement. They previously purchased a mini-van with
the collection of 1,500,000 Labels for Education, and have a goal to
purchase another van. To date they’ve saved 1,350,000 labels, but
need an another 150,000 labels to make the purchase. YOU CAN
HELP . . . just bring your Campbell soup labels to church and drop
them in the collection basket located in the entryway on the wire
shelves. Please make sure to keep the UPC label intact and/or the
Label for Education. Many thanks!

Join us for a light Christmas Lunch on Wednesday, December 14 at
11:30 a.m. (note change in date & time) catered by In the Neighbor-hood. We will have Christmas carols provided by our own Marilou
Haworth, Jeff Moore, and Roy Parker with a special appearance by Selah, the Wonder Dog. In order to plan for lunch, please RSVP by Monday,
December 12. Cost will be $10 per person, and a sign-up sheet will be available in the office.
Our next gathering will be January 18, 2017. We will be discussing the future direction of Wisdom Keepers, so come with your thoughts and
ideas on how you see us growing into 2017.
The Quilters will be taking a holiday break in December and will
not meet. They would like you to join them in the New Year on
Tuesday, January 17, 2017, in the Youth Room from 6:00 p.m. -
9:00 p.m. Feel free to invite friends, family and neighbors of all
ages. This is a great way to create a deep fellowship as well as
learn a new and useful craft in the art of quilting. The quilts are
donated to service organizations and are also given to the babies
who are baptized at Cornerstone.
If you have any questions, please contact Margit Rippberger at
[email protected], or Barbara Schening at [email protected] or

HEIFER INTERNATIONAL
We are pleased to announce that this month's Mission of the Month will
be Heifer International. Heifer International is a nonprofit, humanitarian organization dedicated to ending hunger and poverty and caring for
the earth. Heifer currently provides livestock, trees, seeds, and training in environmentally sound agriculture to families in 30 countries. They work
with small farming families and communities because they believe they are the key to feeding us all.
Their holistic approach is designed to help communities become the
drivers of their own change by cultivating the following:
Income and nutrition; Improving the environment; Women's empowerment; Social capital; Passing on the Gift.
Since 1944 they have helped more than 22.6 million families in more than
125 countries. By 2020, they aim to end hunger and poverty for 4 million families in the communities where they work.
As we take part in this wonderful ministry, we are very excited to be
hosting our very own Living Market, where we will be able to get involved in making sure this ministry continues to carry on. We will be able to
make an impact around the world. We will prayerfully challenge each oth-er to sacrifice some of the material gifts this Christmas and encourage families to get involved in our Living Market. The Living Market will be
held on the 11th of December (before and after both services). There will be a table set-up at the entryway. Stay tuned for more information. If
you have questions, please contact Jeff Cartee at 847-878-1255 or go online at: www.heifer.org
Thank you and God bless.

Awana Clubs has found a home at Cornerstone Church! Awana Clubs
will meet Wednesday evenings from 6:33 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
throughout the school year, beginning January 4, 2017. Awana
consists of different levels depending on the age of your children: Puggles
(2 - 3 year olds), Cubbies (3 - 5 year olds), Sparks (Kindergarten, Grade 1
& 2), Truth & Training (Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6), Trek (Middle School) and
Journey (High School). A free will dinner will be available at 6:00 p.m. if
you and your family need to come right from work.
If you are interested in signing up your children or grandchil-
dren, please fill out a registration form located in the church
office. Only one form per family is required.
WE NEED YOU! Positions of Large Group Teacher, Game Director,
Leader, Listener, Student Leader, Secretary and Song Leader are needed
(position descriptions are available in the Literature Rack and the office).
Some are weekly commitments throughout the school year; Large Group
Teacher, Game Director, Leader, Song Leader, and Student Leader. A
Listener, simply listens to kids read the Bible; who would not want to
hear that. A Leader can choose to help one or two days a month or
throughout the entire program. A Listener would only need to be there
between 30 and 45 minutes; that is not too bad is it? The other easy
position is the Secretary. This can be done in your own home or here at
church. The secretary simply puts in the computer all the information
from each night. You would have 7 days to do the input, so it is not that
big of a commitment. Any of the jobs can be “shared” so if you and your
friends want to take turns, much like Sunday School, we are happy to
have you join us.
We are excited for you to be involved in this program. Please call Patti
Kohler-Peschke at 847-208-5507, or Janice Machay at 708-642-2344 with
any questions.
