TTo Lead Like Christ

Today’s gospel message continues the theme of Jesus’ difficult call to discipleship. Recall that in last week’s gospel, Jesus revealed Himself to His Apostles as the long-awaited Savior and tells them, that in order to be His follower, they will be required to share in His suffering before sharing in His glory.

Now Jesus knows that they have been arguing among themselves as to who will be greatest among themselves so He tells them plainly that the path to greatness in His kingdom requires humility and therefore, a genuine willingness to serve the lowliest of our fellow human beings. He demonstrates this teaching by embracing a small child and telling the disciples that they must humble themselves enough to welcome the lowliest human beings they encounter in His name. They must become servant-leaders.

Anyone who has taken care of small children knows that there is very little that children can do for themselves - they require assistance in most aspects of life such as feeding, clothing, shelter, education, safety, etc. Those who lovingly care for children know that they do so without expectation of anything in return. Children in first-century Palestine also had very low social status, and were considered to be on the bottom rung of the social ladder. By publicly embracing and welcoming a small child and encouraging His followers to do likewise, Jesus’ demonstrates that He is able and willing to meet people exactly where they are in order to bring them closer to the kingdom of heaven.

The culture of the world consistently tells us that in order to be great in this world, we must elevate ourselves, directing our energy, focus and talent so as to achieve fame and riches but Christ is telling us the exact opposite. He understands that the desire for greatness must not be stifled but must be redirected and channeled for the good of others. In order to be a great leader, one that leads people to the greatest treasure of all, we must humble ourselves, following His example of humility, service to all and sacrifice. Every Christian is called to lead by serving others. Spend some time reflecting on the opportunities available now to exercise Christian leadership and pray for the grace to respond to those opportunities.

Annual Collection for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul - September 25th & 26th

The annual collection for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be held next weekend, September 25th/26th. This is the main source of funding that SVdP uses throughout the year to help those in our local community who truly struggle with financial, food and personal issues. Your continued generous support of this annual collection is genuinely appreciated - please know that you are ever in our prayers as we are ever mindful that we represent you to those we serve.

Donations are always gratefully accepted via the poor boxes located in the church or sent via mail to: SVdP, 35 Essex St., Andover, MA 01810

St. Vincent de Paul Food Collection - We continue to serve our neighbors, who are in dire need of food by collecting non-perishable food items, specifically: cereal, peanut butter, white-chunk tuna in water, canned ham, 5 lb bags of rice, uncooked black beans, low-sugar/low-sodium canned soup, cans of coffee and fruit cups. Food donations may be dropped off in the marked, blue bins in the entryway of the church.

If you are in need, please call us at 978-475-0039, x49. One of our Vincentians will return your call, and, in confidence, respond.

Notes from the Loft

The St Augustine Music Ministry program held its first big live event this past week with an "Open House/Prayer Service and Potluck Dinner". It was great seeing members that we hadn't seen in some time! We ended the evening with a rehearsal for our 9-11 Commemorative Prayer Service. We welcome Jennifer Moore to our ministry!

Thank you to our Pastor, Fr Peter Gori, for presiding at the 20th Anniversary Remembrance Service for 9-11, to Bridget Rao and Susan Carroll for serving as readers, to members of our Adult Choir for singing beautifully and to Carol Doran for sharing piano accompaniments with me. May we never forget the sacrifice made that day by many and the souls that were lost. If you missed it, it is available on our livestream playlist under 9/11 Service.

Ever thought of "trying out" this ministry? We have opportunities for year round singing or seasonal singing (Christmas and Easter) and if you want to try something different we have a seasonal Handbell Choir! For more information email: [email protected].

Starts Next Week…

Some of the best stories from the bible can be found in the two books of Samuel. Violence, intrigue, deception, betrayal, glory, hope - you name it, these books offer it up as they recount the colorful events of one of the most pivotal periods in salvation history. Follow the prophet Samuel as he becomes God’s instrument for ushering out the era of judges and helping to establish Israel as a kingdom. Join us weekly as we delve into First Samuel:Establishing the Throne of David. Find out who King David was and why his reign was so important to Christianity. The comprehensive format incorporates prayer, commentary, video content and questions for reflection, discussion and application to daily life.

This 18-week program meets Tuesdays 1-2:30pm beginning September 28th. This will be a hybrid format - both in-person in the parish center and virtual. Only fully-vaccinated adults may attend in-person. The registration fee of $45 covers cost of materials. Register online staugustineparish.org/scripture-study or email [email protected].

Did You Know...Where do your Kids Spend Their Time?

You can help keep your children safe by knowing where they spend their time. Get to know the adults who show up at various locations in the community where children gather and where they play together. Be wary of any adult who seems more interested in creating a relationship with a child rather than with other adults. Pay attention when an adult seems to single out a particular child for a relationship or for special attention. Warning signs include treats, gifts, vacations, or other special favors offered only to one specific child.
