Overview

1 Overview

This document describe how to configure and administer the data channelssupported by clear-channel and channelized ports. The following types of trafficcards support data channels: DS-3, E1, E3, OC-12, and STM-1.

The commands described in this document are common to the following porttypes, except where noted:

• Clear-channel ports—DS-3, E1, E3 traffic cards

• Channelized ports—DS-3, E1, channelized OC-12, channelized STM-1traffic cards

Restrictions:

• The SmartEdge 100 router does not support the clear-channel andchannelized ports described in this document.

• The XCRP4 Controller card does not support channelized OC-12c/STM-4ctraffic cards.

• The XCRP4 Controller card supports channelized STM-1c traffic cards, butonly when installed in the SmartEdge 800 chassis.

• The SmartEdge 1200 router does not support first-generation SONET/SDHtraffic cards.

The following terms are used in this document:

• The term port refers to the physical entity on a traffic card.

• The term channel refers to a time-division multiplexed segment of thebandwidth of an E1, E3, DS1, or DS3 port. This document uses the termsubchannel to refer to a time-division multiplexed segment of a channel. Each channel is designated by its port number and channel number. Each subchannel is designated by its port number, channel number, andsubchannel number.

• The terms clear-channel and unchannelized are both used to refer to an E1,E3, DS1, or DS3 port that does not support channels. Channelized portsgenerally support both unchannelized operation and channelized operation.

1.1 Traffic Card Support for Channels

Table 1 lists the SmartEdge router traffic cards that support E1, E3, DS1, andDS3 ports.

1.2 Bandwidth Provided by Channelized Ports

The bandwidth provided by channelized ports and channels is as follows:

• Each port on a channelized OC-12 to DS-3 or OC-12 to DS-3/DS-1 trafficcard provides the bandwidth for up to 12 DS-3 channels.

• Each port on a channelized STM-1 traffic card provides the bandwidth forup to 63 E1 channels; E1 channels can be channelized or clear-channel.

• A channelized DS-3 port or channel provides the bandwidth for 28 DS-1channels, each of which has the bandwidth for 24 DS-0 channels.

• A channelized E1 port or channel supports up to 31 DS-0 channels foruser traffic in a DS-0 channel group.

Overview

1.3 Additional Terminology

Note: The term controller card refers to any version of the Cross-ConnectRoute Processor (XCRP) Controller card (XCRP, XCRP3, XCRP4),including the controller carrier card, unless otherwise noted.

The term controller carrier card refers to the controller functions on thecircuit board within the SmartEdge 100 chassis; these functions arecompatible with the XCRP3 Controller card. The term I/O carrier cardrefers to the traffic card functions on the circuit board; these functionsare compatible with the similar functions that are implemented on allSmartEdge 400 and SmartEdge 800 traffic cards.

The term chassis refers to any SmartEdge chassis; the term SmartEdge800 refers to any version of the SmartEdge 800 chassis; the termSmartEdge 800s refers only to the SmartEdge 800s chassis.

TaskRoot Command Notes

Change to a loopback state on thechannel group to test channel groupoperation.

loopback(channels)

Enter this command in DS-0 groupconfiguration mode.

2.8 Port and Channel Operations

You can display various types of information about ATM, Ethernet, Packetover SONET/SDH (POS), clear-channel ports and channels, and channelizedports and channels; clear port counters; and test port and channel operation byperforming the appropriate task listed in Table 18. Enter the clear commandsin exec mode; enter the show commands in any mode.

Table 18 Port and Channel Operations

Task Root Command

Clear counters associated with the specified port or channel. clear port counters

Clear performance-monitoring (PM) statistics for the specified port, aspecific channel, all channels on a channelized port, or all channels inthe system.

show portperf-monitor

Display the current status of one or more ports or channels, and providecontinuous updates to the status.

monitor port

Display the bindings for one or more interfaces and the ports to whichthey are bound.

show ip interface

Display a list of the ports in the system. show port

Display general counters and counters specific to the port or channel type. show port counters

Display the medium access control (MAC) address and other lower-layersettings of a single port, all ports on a card, or all ports in the system;display configuration information and other lower-layer settings, includingchannels, for a single port, all ports on a card, or all ports in the system.

show port detail

Display configuration information and PM statistics for a specific port orchannel.

show portperf-monitor

Display detailed information about the transceivers installed in theSmartEdge router, including their current status

Configuration Examples

3 Configuration Examples

This section provides examples of configurations for a channelized OC-12port, a DS-3 channel and port, a DS-1 channel, a clear-channel E3 port, achannelized STM-1 port, an E1 channel and port and a DS-0 channel group.

3.1 Channelized OC-12 Port

The following example shows how to configure port 1 on the channelizedOC-12 traffic card in slot 4 using all the defaults:

[local]Redback#config[local]Redback(config)#port channelized-oc12 4/1[local]Redback(config-port)#description channelized OC-12[local]Redback(config-port)#no shutdown

3.2 DS-3 Channel and Port

The following example shows how to configure clear-channel DS-3 channel 1on the first constituent STS-1 channel on port 1 on the channelized OC-12 trafficcard in slot 4 using all the defaults, and set the encapsulation to frame-relay:

[local]Redback#config[local]Redback(config)#port ds3 4/1:1[local]Redback(config-ds3)#description clear-channel ds3[local]Redback(config-ds3)#encapsulation frame-relay[local]Redback(config-ds3)#no shutdown

The following example shows how to configure port 1 on the channelized DS-3traffic card in slot 2 using all the defaults:

[local]Redback#config[local]Redback(config)#port channelized-ds3 2/1[local]Redback(config-ds3)#description channelized ds3[local]Redback(config-ds3)#no shutdown

3.3 DS-1 Channel

The following example shows how to configure a DS-1 channel 1 on DS-3port 1 on the channelized DS-3 traffic card in slot 2 using all the defaults, butspecifying the encapsulation:
