CLIMATE ACTION PLAN

Page 60: Conferencia Maria-bellalta 051514

• 2009, BAC signs the American College and University

Presidents’ Climate Commitment, ACUPCC.

• 2011, BAC initiates its Climate Action Plan, CAP; assess

current energy loads and set strategies to reduce and

offset carbon emissions.

• Sustainable Campus Initiative and Sustainable Council are

established.

BAC’s COMMITMENT TO CLIMATE CHANGE :

Page 61: Conferencia Maria-bellalta 051514

• Boston Water and Sewer Commission (BWSC)

• Groundwater Conservation Overlay District (GCOD) Compliance

Review

• Protection of Existing Utilities

• Discharge of Geothermal Well Bleed

• Public Improvement Commission (PIC)

• First Permitting of Porous Asphalt in a Public Way

• First Permitting of Geothermal Wells in Public Way

• Set Policies for Licensing and Maintenance of Green Infrastructure

COLLABORATION AND PERMITTING WITH PUBLIC AGENCIES:

Page 62: Conferencia Maria-bellalta 051514

1. Green Alley and a Green Roof to help replenish the

receding Back Bay water table and reduce energy use.

2. Geothermal wells in the Green Alley to heat and cool BAC

buildings and reduce and eliminate the need for other

energy resources.

3. Recycling and reducing waste

▫ Roof runoff is directed into the

porous pavement underdrain and

held for a 6” depth

▫ Water falling on the porous

pavement filters through the stone

layers

▫ Reduces flow to combined sewer

One goal of the Green Alley is to

reduce the amount of water into

Boston’s storm drains and to

prevent combined sewer systems

from overflowing.

Page 87: Conferencia Maria-bellalta 051514

Does the Green Alley Work?

Yes! So far, no water flow has been detected leaving the alley system.

Page 88: Conferencia Maria-bellalta 051514

BAC’s LONG TERM PHYSICAL AND EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

• 2045, become Carbon Balanced

• Offset emissions through Green campus activities and by

investing in clean energy, long term, and through

modeling.

• Use more service and urban corridors to mitigate energy

waste, replenish natural resources, and provide renewed

open spaces for the Back Bay and other cultural districts.

• Provide models for contemporary, urban infrastructure

solutions.

Page 89: Conferencia Maria-bellalta 051514

BAC’s LONG TERM PHYSICAL AND EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

• Work with:

o students

o constituencies and agencies

o professional colleagues

o To examine energy use

o To define future design solutions through academic

and applied learning scenarios

o To develop concepts, research and tangible

applications, together and collaboratively
