Foreword Welcome to Ljubljana, Slovenia, and CAiSE’2016, the 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering.

The main theme of CAiSE’2016 is Information systems for connecting people, emphasizing the endeavour of research in information systems engineering to care for the needs and requirements of people, both as individuals and as parts of organizations. In particular, this theme stresses the role of information systems for communication among individuals, organizational units, and organizations themselves. It could also imply knowledge building and knowledge sharing, all kinds of decision making, negotiating and reaching agreements, bridging differences and distances among various points-of-view, perspectives, positions and/or cultures.

CAiSE’2016 itself is also an endeavour for connecting people. It is the mission of the CAiSE conference series to foster exchange among and between researchers and practitioners of the various disciplines contributing to the goal of envisioning, establishing, designing, and analysing advanced information systems. This goal is reflected in the different formats of events: reports on major scientific achievements in the main programme, tutorials for dissemination and education, keynotes for inspiration and opening of new directions, a forum, workshops and working conferences for the discussion of new approaches in the frontier of scientific development. This year, we are experimenting with a new format: the CAiSE Radar, to stimulate discussion and feedback on ongoing work and new provocative ideas. We encourage you all to actively participate in these discussions.

The organization of CAiSE’2016 is only possible by connecting the efforts of many dedicated individuals sharing their knowledge and insight, their enthusiasm and experience: the outstanding keynote speakers, the authors of scientific contributions, the members of the

various programme committees, the organizers of workshops and working conferences, and chairs in various capacities listed in the organization chart. We are very grateful for your dedication and the great service you provide for our community. In particular, we thank the programme committee chairs Selmin Nurcan and Pnina Soffer for putting together such a strong scientific programme and for their untiring support, and the organization team Vida Groznik, Slavko Žitnik, and Marko Janković. from the Faculty of Computer and Information Science for offering such a pleasant environment. And last but not least we thank the steering committee of CAiSE for giving us the possibility to organize this year’s conference, for ensuring the high standards of the conference series throughout the years, and for establishing and maintaining this fine community of scholars.

We hope you find this programme as exciting as we do and wish you a pleasant and intensive conference. And not to forget the social events which should give you ample opportunities to renew old, and establish new, connections with fellow researchers and friends.

About the program As programme chairs, we are extremely proud of the excellent scientific programme, which is the result of much effort made by many people. First and foremost, it is the authors of the papers, who submitted their research results. CAiSE’2016 received 211 full-paper submissions from all over the world: papers were submitted from 48 countries in all 5 continents, and this is an indication of the global presence and reputation of the CAiSE conference and the ongoing interest in information systems engineering around the world. Second, 122 Programme Committee members devoted their time and knowledge for reviewing these submissions. Each PC member reviewed 5-6 papers, and each paper was reviewed by at least 3 reviewers. Third, 19 Programme Board members led the reviewing process and the discussion of the papers, contributing their expertise and experience to the selection of 35 excellent papers to be presented at CAiSE’2016. We thank everyone involved for this joint effort.

The conference programme features 12 paper sessions, devoted to a variety of topics, “traditional” topics associated with information systems engineering, as well as more contemporary topics and ones specifically related to the conference theme. The paper sessions include collaboration, business process modelling, mining and performance, innovation and gamification, requirements engineering, conceptual modelling, mining and decision support, cloud and services, variability and configuration, open source software, and business process management.

In addition, the programme includes three keynote speakers who have agreed to share their research findings and exciting visions with us: Jonathan Grudin, a leading researcher and pioneer of the field of collaboration and group support technologies; Igor Benko, a senior engineering manager at Google; and Barbara Pernici, a known leader at the CAiSE community.

The programme also includes:

• 4 tutorials, devoted to Sustainability in IS engineering and research, Quality of business process models, Capability driven development for building sustainable IS, and ICT-based creativity and innovation. The four tutorials were selected by Xavier Franch and Jolita Ralyté, the tutorial chairs from 9 proposals that were submitted.

• The CAiSE Forum, where fresh and innovative research will be presented and discussed. The Forum includes 23 papers, selected by Sergio Espana and Mirjana Ivanović, the Forum chairs.

• The traditional Doctoral Consortium, organized by Roel Wieringa, Stefanie Rinderle-Ma, and Oscar Pastor, the DC chairs. 9 PhD students will present and discuss their research.

• An industrial track that starts this year with an Industrial Symposium with invited speakers Synco Jonkeren, Fabrizio Renzi, and Albrecht Ricken, coming from research labs of Oracle, IBM and SAP respectively. They will speak about how their companies see the vision of future information systems and their role in connecting people. Following this symposium there will be two sessions where 6 industry papers will be presented.

The CAiSE conference also features several co-hosted events including 3 working conferences: BPMDS, EMMSAD, ICSOB and 8 workshops: ASDENCA, BUMDISE, EOMAS, EnBIS, COGNISE, WISSE, STIPS, EM. Altogether these events received 168 submissions out of which 94 were accepted for presentation at the respective events.

We believe this program reflects the many facets of current research in Information Systems Engineering and hope it will be exciting and inspiring for the participants of the conference.

Welcome Reception Wednesday, 15 June 2016 at 19:00

Venue: Ljubljana Castle

The castle of Ljubljana is just one of the castles in the city, but certainly the biggest one and also the most visited. Built in the middle of the 15th century, today it is a popular tourist destination for both locals and foreigners. It offers an outstanding view of the city, a romantic atmosphere and numerous cultural eve-nts.

When the Habsburgs took over the area of today's Slovenia in 1335, they demolished the fortress of the Spanheim family, which stood on the hill, and in the second half of the 15th century started building a new one that still stands today. At first it consisted of only walls, towers and wooden barracks, but through centuries the castle took its present form. Its main purpose was to defend against Turkish invasions, which were the most frequent in the 15th and 16th centuries, while peasant rebellions were not uncommon either. In the 17th and 18th centuries the castle had the function of a military hospital and an arsenal. When Napoleon brought freedom and cultural and national enlightenment to the citizens of Ljubljana in 1809, a war with the Habsburgs broke out. During this war the Pipers' tower was demolished and a new wooden one erected on the place of today's stone one. After the French had left, the Habsburgs used the castle for jails. The jail period lasted until the end of the Second World War, when first the Italians and after their capitulation the Germans took over the management of the castle. Until 1963

12

ostracized citizens of Ljubljana lived on the castle in terrible conditions. In the 1970s renovation began and today the castle is a popular tourist destination.

You may be surprised to find that you do not have to pay anything to enter the castle courtyard, where you can relax with a cup of coffee, glass of wine or piece of cake. You can visit numerous art exhibitions, which take place in different parts of the castle and are usually for free as well. By the entrance there is Galerija Rustika, where you can buy or just admire high quality products of Slovene traditional handcraft. On the other side of the castle there is a chapel and a viewing tower together with the Virtual Castle, where you can see a documentary about the history of the castle in Slovene, English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Croatian and Italian. On the left side of the castle chapel you will also find an excellent Museum of Slovene History and a modern restaurant serving traditional Slovenian food.

How to get there Before the Welcome reception we will organize a short tour around the city centre. We will meet at 18:00 at the Congress Square (A). After the tour we will go together to Ljubljana castle. We will divide into two groups. The first one will use the Ljubljana Castle Funicular (B) and the second one will walk to the castle (C).

If you do not have time to attend the tour, you can reach the castle yourself (B, C). You can also use a taxi to get there.

Conference Dinner Thursday, 16 June 2016 at 19:00

Venue: Grand Hotel Union

The Grand Hotel Union held its grand opening in 1905. It was the first modern hotel in Ljubljana and at the time the highest building, built in Art Nouveau style. The hotel was built in an unbelievable 18 months, and the opening ceremony lasted for 7 days. The hotel is located where the Baroque part of the city ends and the more modern Art Nouveau part begins.

The Grand Hotel Union was one of the biggest, finest and most modern hotels in southeast Europe, i.e. south of Prague and Vienna. It had 87 rooms, a modern restaurant, a café, a large concert hall (today’s Union hall), a bowling alley and several salons for ceremonies. The hotel also had a lift, central heating and telephones, which was rare for that time. Since it was built after the great earthquake, it had an extremely good static support. The Grand Hotel Union set standards for all future hotels and is still a milestone in technology.

For more than a century of existence, the Grand hotel Union has been an important co-creator of the political and social life in the capital and in the wider Ljubljana region. In its rich history the hotel witnessed many important events and hosted many famous people – actor and director Orson Welles in 1979, American president Bill

Keynote speakers Jonathan Grudin, Microsoft Research

Wednesday, 15 June 2016 at 9:30

Jonathan Grudin is a principal researcher at Microsoft. He was previously professor of Information and Computer Science at the

University of California, Irvine. He received his PhD in cognitive psychology at UC San Diego, working with Donald Norman. Before and after graduate studies he worked as a software developer. He has worked for the British Medical Research Council, Aarhus University, Keio University, and the University of Oslo, and has an affiliate position at the University of Washington

Information School. He has been active in the ACM Computer-Human Interaction and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work areas since their formation in the 1980s. His central research foci have been the adoption of communication and collaboration technologies, particularly in enterprise settings, and methods and processes for developing interactive software. In 2014, a paper he gave at CSCW 1988 paper received the first CSCW Lasting Impact award. In recent years he has focused particularly on enterprise uses of social media and on uses of technology in primary and secondary education. For six years he edited ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction and for ten years was an ACM Computing Surveys associate editor. He edited and wrote an ACM Interactions column on HCI history topics for 8 years and has a monthly blog in the online magazine. He is an ACM Technical Fellow and member of the ACM SIGCHI CHI Academy.

Keynote: Three Projects and a Projection Thirty years ago, working as a software engineer, I was asked to help develop information systems for connecting people—a range of communication and collaboration support applications and features.

Page 30: Conference Programme - CAiSE 2016caise2016.si/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/ConferenceProgramme_w… · International Conference on Advanced Information Systems ... business process

30

It proved difficult to develop systems that people wanted to use. To understand why I gravitated to research, continuing to work with developers and HCI practitioners when opportunities arise. In this talk I will discuss three favorite projects in recent years that had directly applied goals. The goals were fully realized in one case, partly realized in a second, and the third is a favorite because of what we learned. The project areas were an enterprise email system extension, an enterprise ‘serious game’ platform, and K-12 (primary and secondary) education. I will then step back to describe changes over thirty years that seem salient, and some of the challenges and opportunities confronting us today.

Igor Benko, Google Thursday, 16 June 2016 at 9:30

Igor Benko is a senior engineering manager at Google. His career has spanned research, hands-on software development, and leading software engineering teams. Igor obtained a Bachelor’s degree from

the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and a Master’s and a PhD from the University of Waterloo, Canada. His academic research was in concurrency, from low-level process coordination algorithms to an algebra for concurrent processes. As a researcher at Sun Labs Igor worked on new inherently parallel processor architectures, he modeled protocols for networks on chip, and parallelized modeling of growth of snow

crystals. At Agfa-Gevaert, Igor was responsible for development of a PACS, a system for processing, accessing, and archiving medical images. At SkyGrid, Igor led development of a real-time search for news. At Google, Igor was the engineering lead for Google Play Music store. He led development of My Maps, allowing a user to create their own map on top of Google Maps. Currently, Igor is working on

31

introducing interactive features into Google Search, and for expanding Google Search with new types of data.

Keynote: Making your users and you tick A successful system delights its users, makers, and operators. Making such a system requires melding of different disciplines, practices, a good timing, perseverance, social responsibility, risk management, and some luck. The challenge amplifies when the system targets users across continents and vastly different cultures. In this talk we will illustrate some of the challenges with lessons from Google Search and Google Maps. In particular, we will look into features that help connecting people and that help connect people to the issues they care about. As examples we will use My Maps that connect people over social issues. We will also look at experimental features in Google Search where we enabled interactions between people and cultural moments, and where we enabled American presidential candidates post content directly to Google Search.

Page 32: Conference Programme - CAiSE 2016caise2016.si/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/ConferenceProgramme_w… · International Conference on Advanced Information Systems ... business process

32

IFIP WG 8.1 on Information Systems Design, and vice-chair of the IFIP WG on Services-Oriented Software.

Keynote: Processes and quality of data While a great emphasis has been given in the literature on modeling and analyzing the structure of processes, data being processed and managed within processes are often considered with less attention. In the talk, the importance of data in processes will be analyzed mainly from the point of view of its quality. The data being considered include both the ones directly managed by the process and also the ones that are available in the process execution environment, providing information about its context of execution. In particular, the presentation will discuss the issues and possible techniques that can be adopted for evaluating the impact of poor data quality on processes, for assessing the importance of different data quality dimensions, such as, for instance, accuracy, consistency, and completeness, for improving processes adding data quality controls, for repairing processes when failures due to poor data quality occur during execution. Finally, future directions for research considering the opportunities and issues arising from the larger and larger amounts of data available in process environments from different sources will analyzed and discussed.

Keynote: Cognitive Solutions for System Engineering We are clearly entering with high speed in a new cognitive era. How to make sense out it? The word sense has different meanings: anatomic (5 senses), philosophic (make sense out of reality) and linguistic (the sense or the semantic meaning of the language). In the cognitive era the systems are starting to get equipped with sense anatomically with sensors (internet of things), philosophically (making sense out of big data) and linguistically (with semantic web and new

34

systems able to cope with language semantic). In a certain sense machines are getting sensible. What can we do that make sense with sensible machines? There are debates on them replacing human brains. In a conference like this it is clear to all of us that this is sci-fi. In practical term sensible machines as I like to call them, or cognitive computing as this is called in scientific literature can augment the capabilities of humans. In this presentation several use cases of this augmentation possibilities will be provided with special focus on system engineering.

Keynote: Serving a varied bunch: modern HR system There are all sorts of theories as to how to build connecting technology. In a certain sense, with a Human Resources (or: Human Capital Management) system, that’s where the rubber hits the road. A system that is expected to cater for various types of users: professionals as well as casual users, baby-boomers as well as millenials, supposed to take into account basic administrative tasks as well as social collaboration and finally delivering practical information for blue collar workers as well as strategic decision support analytics for C-level executives.

We’ll take a high level look at the user interface and functionality domains of Oracle’s state of the art HCM solution in the cloud. I’ll share some of the key design principles and business realities that form the foundation of a system that touches people inside and outside of the organization. We believe that a user-friendly and functionally rich system helps create happy employees and ultimately happy customers. I look forward to discussing this with you.

Research & Innovation in 2012. In the supply chain council he founded and chairs the Special Interest Group on Product Management and Innovation, who released the PLCOR process reference for Innovation and Product Management. Albrecht Ricken earned his Ph.D. in computer science and a Diplom in industrial engineering at Karlsruhe University, Germany. His research interests include innovation and incubation processes as well as cyberphysical systems for Industrie 4.0 / the Industrial Internet.

Keynote: Business Network of Things The Internet of Things is shaping a new revolution by making every THING smart. This will drive a new wave of digitalization, awareness, and connectivity that will re-invent manufacturing and supply chain logistics. It will fundamentally change how products are ordered, built, and consumed. Unlocking the value of greater connectivity requires a different approach to the design and architecture business applications:

1. Things move center stage and replace today’s focus on flows of information and documents

2. Business networks and big data bring down borders between corporate silos of work and information, evolving into places where companies connect, share, and communicate with each other

3. Simplicity: Customers around the globe are becoming more educated and digitally experienced, driving user empowerment. Future users will define the systems to their need without involving an IT department. They expect business applications to hide their complexity and engage with them in a way they understand.

This presentation outlines a vision for a more active, autonomous, and self-organizing approach to IT and towards a new business platform, which addresses and integrates these trends.
