As a Collateral Event of the 55. International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia, Zuecca Project Space presents an exhibition of new works by Ai Weiwei, from 29 May - 15 September 2013. The artist’s only major new solo show in 2013, it will be presented across two locations in Venice: the Zitelle complex, home of Zuecca Projects, and the church of Sant’Antonin. Work by Ai Weiwei will also be on display elsewhere in the Venice Biennale as part of a group exhibition at the German Pavilion.

Curated by Maurizio Bortolotti, the exhibition will comprise landmark works showing Ai Weiwei at the height of his artistic and polemic powers. In Zuecca will be seen an expanded version of the artist’s acclaimed sculptural installation Straight. First exhibited as part of his 2012 acclaimed survey show at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC., Straight is formed from multiple tons of steel rebar recovered from the collapsed schools in which more than five thousand children perished during the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan, China.

To be revealed during the opening week of the Venice Biennale, Ai Weiwei has specially conceived a new work for the Sant’Antonin church location. This will function as a dialogue between the artist and the existing architecture, offering an immediate sense of the drama of an event which underlines the contradictory development of contemporary China.

One of the leading cultural figures of his generation Ai Weiwei has consistently displayed great courage, placing himself at risk to affect social change through his art. He serves as an example for legitimate social criticism and free expression both in China and internationally.

The exhibition with Zuecca Projects represents a new chapter in the long-standing historical relationship - founded on trade, as well as

religious and cultural exchange - that exists between China and Venice. The relationship will acquire fresh immediacy in light of the artist’s interpretation of Contemporary China within the context of the city.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with Lisson Gallery, which has represented and worked closely with Ai Weiwei since 2010, presenting acclaimed solo exhibitions of his work at its London and Milan locations.

In 2011 Ai Weiwei was imprisoned for 81 days in

a secret location ...

Ai Wiewei Disposition81 Days in prison

X

Page 9: Condign Art Mag Issue #02 Sept/Oct 13

On April 3, 2011, Ai was arrested at Beijing Capital International Airport just before catching a flight to Hong Kong and his studio facilities were searched.. A police contingent of approximately 50 officers came to his studio, threw a cordon around it and searched the premises. They took away laptops and the hard drive from the main computer; along with Ai, police also detained eight staff members and Ai’s wife, Lu Qing. Police also visited the mother of Ai’s two year-old son.

In 2011 Ai Weiwei was imprisoned for 81 days in a secret location, and for the first time, the artist describes the experience of those 81 days in prison, and the continuos, obsessive surveillance to which he was subjected during that entire period. The project consists of six metal containers, about 1’5 meters in height, inside whichkey moments of the everyday life of the artist during his imprisonment. The six episodes of life in prison are the representation, in the form of dioramas inside each container, of different moments of the prisoner’s day.

Their positioning inside the chrch of Sant’Antonin assigns sub-titles to the six episodes, underlining

the site-specific character of the work: S upper, A ccusers, C leansing, R itual, E ntropy, D oubt (SCARED). The containers have small openings through which visitors can observe the individual scenes.

The precision of the details and the painstaking reproduction of the soaces pass through the powerful filter of the artist’s memory, which seems to relive instant after instant in the project, without anguish but with lucid determination. The works are an effective description of the system of ‘high-proximity’ surveillance deployed by the detention system to which the artist was subjected.

The titles of the individual dioramas inside the six containers also point to the relationships they establish with the religious place that hosts them, from the general idea od the ‘sacred’ indicated in the title, to that of ‘ritual’ and ‘renewal’, concluding with the less religious concepts of ‘entropy’ and ‘doubt’.

LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA

Art News

The Venice Biennale officially opened to the The Venice Biennale officially opened to the public on June 1, which means the VIP crowd was long gone by the time the common people were able to take a look at the much written about works from artists all over the globe.

While it was true that Ai Weiwei, Jeremy Deller, and other big name artists were visible this year, the most interesting works on view were arguably by lesser-known artists like Feng Zhengjie, Marya Kazoun, Yüksel Arslan and Tavares Strachan.

While the pavilions at this year’s Biennale attempt to outdo one another in terms of architectural grandeur and artistic wackiness, to wander through them is a joy. And if the colossal range of art isn’t enough, the people-watching is fantastic.

The Encyclopaedic Palace is this year’s international art exhibition, in which a performance art piece by Tino Sehgal takes place in a gallery filled with the drawings of visionary educationalist Rudolph Steiner. They are diagrams of ideas in electrically bright colours on black paper. The Palace is named after a 1955 design proposal for “an imaginary museum” by Italian-American artist Marino Auriti that would “house all worldly knowledge.”

This year, the Vatican has chosen to enter the first ever Pavilion of the Holy See, becoming one of

the 88 nations to show work at this cacophonous, often irreligious festival of art from across the world. This year, the Vatican has chosen to enter the first ever Pavilion of the Holy See, becoming one of the 88 nations to show worWhile most of the art to be seen in Venice comes from the chosen representatives of different nations, the tone is set by the large thematic exhibition housed in the central pavilion in the Giardini and the cavernous Arsenale. Every year the national participation gets bigger, and now includes 88 countries and territories. The first-timers at this year’s Biennale are Angola, Bahamas, Bahrain, Ivory Coast, Kosovo, Kuwait, the Maldives, Paraguay, Tuvalu and the Holy See.

The Holy See pavilion takes the first 11 chapters of Genesis as its starting point. Its title – Creation, Uncreation, Re-creation – hints at ideas “fundamental for culture and for church tradition”, according to Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the president of the pontifical council

for culture and the figure behind the Holy See’s appearance at the biennale.

This year’s prestigious Golden Lion has been awarded to Angola for a photographic exhibition about urban symbolism – hopefully a sign that countries without super-power funding will be afforded greater recognition in future.

The Venice Biennale has for over a century been one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. Established in 1895, the Biennale has an attendance today of over 370,000 visitors at the Art Exhibition. The history of the Venice Biennale dates back from 1895, when the first International Art Exhibition was organized. In the 1930s new festivals were born: Music, Cinema, and Theatre (the Venice Film Festival in 1932 was the first film festival ever organized). In 1980 the first Intl. Architecture Exhibition took place, and in 1999 Dance made its debut at the Venice Biennale.

PHIL FROST‘S mural in Covent Garden’s Neal’s Yard

Art News

Phil Frost‘s mural in Covent Garden’s Neal’s Yard, London is a great example of the artist’s admirable ability to take over a space and brand it to his creative rhythm. This classic piece of urban art has been around since 1996. It started as a small commission piece for Slam City Skates and Frost has been adding a touch of color to it every single time he’s in town, now extending his painting to a large part of the alley.

New York artist Phil Frost creates work that combines the raw, gritty edge of the street with an elegant, painterly aesthetic. Frost first became known in the early 1990s for his involved installations on the streets of New York. Locations were scouted, measured and analyzed for feasibility before he painstakingly created the artwork in his studio. Works, usually composed of numerous panels were then affixed to his targets under cover of darkness. In 1994, these street works inspired a PBS episode of City Arts featuring the artist. His transition to the gallery world was inevitable

and after a string of strong showings in group exhibitions, he mounted his first solo exhibition at the Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, in 1999. His found object constructions and works on canvas are a multi-layered combination of colorful, almost comic-strip portraits and intricate typography overlaid with bold graphic symbols rendered, more often than not, in correction fluid. Words and slogans that are a hybrid of numerous languages, both real and imagined, are layered within the works to create compositions that are spiritual in nature, transmitting inner quickening as mantra or gestural prayer.

His artwork has been featured on album covers for popular recording artists such as DJ Shadow and Sick Of It All. In recent years, Frost has continued to show his work in numerous exhibitions, including a second showing at Jack Shainman in New York (2001) and his first American museum exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia (2002).

JEAN MICHEL BASQUIAT

On February 10, 1985, he appeared on the cover of The New York Ti-

mes Magazine in a feature entitled “New Art, New Money: The Marke-

ting of an American Artist”.

Jean-Michel Basquiat was born on the 22nd of December in 1960 in Brooklyn, New York and died on the 12th of August in 1988 of a drug overdose in his Manhattan studio. His death, like a rock star, helped to make Jean-Michel Basquiat a legend, but only because he had already reached unquestionable fame through his work as a graffiti artist and an innovative painter. In addition to his tragic death, he is most known for his loose and unencumbered painterly graphic style so often associated with street art that started to gain such notoriety in the 1980s. As well, his subject matter provocatively positioned and layered imagery, iconography and text that addressed issues of race, culture and heritage.Born to a Haitian father, Gerard Basquiat, and a Puerto Rican

mother, Matilde Andrades, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s heritage would prove to be a pivotal influence in his work as an artist. He was the oldest of three children; his siblings were both girls, Lisane and Jeanine, four and seven years younger than he, respectively. He was considered an extremely bright and gifted young boy; he learned how to read and write by the age of four (in general), and was reading, writing and speaking English, French and Spanish by the age of eleven. His artistic ability was recognized at quite a young age by his mother and his teachers and was greatly encouraged. His mother would take him into Manhattan to see art and enrolled him as a junior member of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and thus he was exposed to various artistic disciplines and practices very early on.

His growing heroin addiction began to interfere with his personal relationships. When Andy Warhol died on February 22, 1987, Basquiat became increasingly isolated, and his heroin

addiction and depression grew more severe.

“comeback” for Jean-Michel Basquiat, yet just two months after the exhibition closed the artist was dead from a drug over-dose.

His death shocked the art world and caused further critical engagement with his work and his persona. The Whitney Museum of American Art produced the first retrospective of his work four years later, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art produced a further retrospective in 2005. There have been countless articles, stories and critical debate circling the artist and his oeuvre, all of which cause controversy and contradiction. Julian Schnabel directed the film Basquiat released in 1996, which yielded much criticism for mythologizing the artist. More recent biographies have come out that claim to be closer to the “true spirit” of the artist, such as the Radiant Child by Tamra Davis. Yet, perhaps that “spirit” is to be left up to his actual paintings, which whether one critically lauds them or pans them, one cannot deny their intrinsic energy and “spirit”.

The many heroes that adorned Jean-Michel Basquiat’s surfaces were important black figures in history and culture from Muhammad Ali to Charlie Parker. Musicians figured most in his work.

In his “later” work (later in quotes as his career was incredibly short) Jean-Michel Basquiat became more economical in his gestures and marks yet more severe in his hand and subjects of address. Many art historians have attributed thus to the after-effects of his unprecedented rise to stardom, his increasing drug addiction (heroin) and the mourning over the death of Andy Warhol. His last exhibition was produced over months of the artist working mostly in isolation and retreat. He had tried to get past his drug addiction twice, yet it is not clear how often or how long he remained, if he remained, ‘clean’. The exhibition, his first solo show in two years in New York, was held at a new gallery, Baghoomian, due to his falling out with Mary Boone.

The show was critically lauded and considered a major shift and

Ann dunbar is an award winning artist, whose style is both classical and romantic with essences of Impressionism, executed in a contemporary way. Her landscapes are soulful and serene. You find yourself transported into a world of flickering lights on an abundance of silken threads;the scene shimmers and springs to life.

From a young age Ann was dedicated to her artistic pursuits and with the support and encouragement of both her parents and teachers her talents blossomed. She went on to attend formal art training in the UK, both for a teacher’s diploma and a degree with honours.

Whilst teaching Ann began experimenting with mixed media and after many years of research she developed a remarkable technique of marrying water colour with textured embroidery on paper.

Her passion for this magical combination is evident in her work. Suzie Vitmaa

Creativity doesn’t stop at the canvas. Ways to get your Art out there.

So you are an artist, and you create art because you love doing it. It’s your passion, your life, heart and soul go into each piece, and in order to support yourself you decide to sell your artworks to make a living, to raise awareness and to become more and more successful.

There are many interesting options for artists to get more exposure, and it’s up to you to choose what you want for your career. Assuming you already have your your own website or blog. And you are socialising and networking on facebook, twitter, pinterest, LinkedIn. Perhaps you are also already joined up with an online art gallery that help you selling. However you are looking for more exposure, and whats a better way than showing your artworks in real-life to the crowds.

Benefits to exhibiting artwork.Exhibiting your art for people to view and to see your pieces from up close is almost a necessity to make a sale. Buyers want to see the brush strokes, the vibrant colours that play with the light, the frame that surrounds the

piece, and to experience the emotion that the art piece gives in real-life. It ’s also very likely that they want to speak to the artist directly and get to hear the story behind the piece from the creator themselves.

For the artist it ’s also a great opportunity to meet the potential buyers in person. It will give you more insight to what they find interesting about your works. It can give you more inspiration for future works. And at the same time you are also building up your own data of art collectors that are fascinated by your works. Giving you a solid client network to work from, as buyers will be interested to see how well you are doing, and are very likely to buy from you again.

How to exhibit artwork? There are numerous ways of exhibiting your artwork. Through a commercial gallery, by setting up your own local exhibition, by participating at an art fair or group art exhibition. The thing is that most of these will require a certain amount of investment. You selling art, is the same as having your own company. And companies have to invest before getting a return.

Raise awerness. And become more successful.

p. 019

Benefits of participating at Art Fairs.Art fairs are specialised in giving you the best promotion and exposure you can get. With partners and sponsors international art fairs can reach millions of people. Advertising your artworks on their websites, social media, in catalogues, posters, flyers to a huge crowd including global press, independent Curators and Agents. Getting thousands of people through the doors of the exhibition venue that come and see your artworks! Picking up your business card. Seeing your

artwork. Giving you the opportunity to speak to all of these Art lovers and Art professionals.

Engage with them, handing them over your contact details, make a connection. And if potential buyers do not purchase one of your pieces at the art fair, they might still be interested in the months after, so spreading as well as gathering details is important. It ’s very likely that Press also attends the Art Fairs, and if lucky your artwork can even be featured on TV, Radio or by a Newspaper or Magazine. A great step forward in your career!

Creativity doesn’t stop at the canvas! There are numerous ways for artists with a lack of funds to participate at the art events that they wish to attend. Think about the following ways of raising a budget for you to be able to participate at exhibitions in Tokyo, London, Amsterdam, Miami, New York, etc…

Online Crowdfunding. People all over the world use crowdfunding platforms to raise huge amounts of money for all types of campaigns. Try it!

Seek Corporate Sponsorship. Companies need to promote their services, and what better way than to sponsor an artist, who can give them promotion worldwide through getting advertised by the art fair organisation. You can also reward them for their sponsorship by giving them a customised piece of art!.

Seek Sponsorship from an Art Collector. Ask one (or more) of your Art Collectors to sponsor you to participate at an international art event. It ’s also in their interest that you will do well as the more successful you become, the more valuable your art becomes (which they own a piece of). Write a good letter to seek sponsorship explaining the benefits to them. In return you could also offer to create a special piece for them. A win-win situation.

Apply together. Share costs by applying with an Artist friend or a group of Artists.

Payment options. Many exhibition and art fairs are willing to be flexible and will agree paying the fee in instalments (per month for example).

Safe up now. Start saving up now for that exhibition next year. Each art piece you sell donate a certain amount into your exhibition jar.

Be smart. So when you have established the fee to participate, there are some other costs involved, such as travel expenses and hotel accommodation. With being smart and creative, you can even stay at a nice accommodation without even paying for it.

Find alternative accommodation options. Although many art fairs have discounted rates for staying at hotels nearby the art exhibition venue. You can find cheap (or even free) alternatives. Swap your home with people who have common interests. People you can trust. Best of all - These guys will find them for you! See References.

Best value flightsSky Scanner source for the cheapest flights in the sky. Most times the sooner you book your flights, the cheaper they are.

Taking artworks abroad. Most exhibitors take their works with them on the plane, this is easy, safe and cheaper than you think. Inform with your flight company before travelling what the conditions are. Other exhibitors make a special series of artworks that they can exhibit at the fair, which will easily travel with them in their luggage. You can also inform with your accommodation to ship artworks in advance to your hotel/apartment, etc. Make sure you use a reliable courier, and include all paperwork for it to cross safely to the other side.

Be Smart!

IN- TERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Luana Kroner - Germany, born in Romania. The manifestation of artistic expression by LKS has been shaped by her stays in various countries and her experiences with different cultures. Not the static landscape, but rather the constantly moving societal norms has become the focus of her interest. The human being, as an object of desire and hatred respectively, plays a primary role in these contemplations. www.behance.net/luana-sculptures

Michelle Llona - Peru.A reoccurring leitmotif in Michelle´s work is her persistent quest for a definition of femininity and an understanding of the private world of women in modern society. www.michellellonacollage.com

Nabil Ghandi - Morocco“When we off load our certainties and drop our conditionings, when looking at things as if they had never been contemplated before, free of any definitions or value judgements, then the reality appears as it really is: enlarged and filled with beauty.” www.nabilghandi.com

Sheelagh Peace - UKMulti media artist presently working with ink and acrylic drawings in 2D. The subject matter is predominantly leaning towards the ethereal, esoteric and erotic nature of women, with a keen interested in surface pattern, vintage fashion and fairy tale fantasy. www.eclecticshock.co.uk

Valter Verissimo - Portugal“As dyslexic, art is my great escape. I feel like a fish in water. I am constantly creating, recreating trying new techniques and applying them to my drawings, paintings and sculptures. Life and knowledge inspire me, and if knowledge is infinite, life should be also. I am a man on earth with his head on the moon ... the view from up there is much better!” www.valterverissimo.com

Florian Hirzinger - Austria, Wien.“I seek to visualize emotions by means of photography, which take form in the eye of the viewer. So I carry my camera all around the world and try to capture the most interesting moments. That’s the way my photographs are evolving. The emotion, however, is cultivated by the interpretation of the viewer.” www.fh-ap.com
