M D ls M e s s a g eDuring many of our brain-storming sessions and strategymeetings, the think-tank of SSI expressed their views thatthey all do so many things internally for improvement anddevelopment ofour products, innovation, special projects andso on, which was not reaching the people involved inconcreting industry. To close this gap, we came up with an idea that all theseaspects should be pooled into one single method ofcommunication like a magazine that can be freely circulatedto stake holders in the concreting industry, which will benefitthe entire industry.I would like to congratulate SCHWING Stetter India'smarketing team to have come out with such a publicationcalled 'Concreting Times'. The first ofits edition is coming outin the beginning of fiscal year 2011-12 and it is planned torelease it every quarter. I am extremely happy to release thefirst publication.I would also like to take this opportunity to give a fewinformation and statistics about SCHWING Stetter India toall the readers. After passing through a very bad economicdownturn in the year 2009, we have seen a sudden spurt in theconstruction activities in India. Yes! We can say that theindustry has bounced back from the slowdown.SCHWING Stetter India has grown by over 70% between2009 and 2010, thanks to the various sops given by theGovernment of India during the recession period in bringingdown the excise duty during that period and investing heavilyon infrastructure development projects. In my opinion, still

H6 batching plant at DankaurY am u n a E x p re s s w a y P ro je c tThe Yamuna expressway is a 160km six lane highway coming upbetween Greater Noida and Agra in order to facilitate speedytransport between Noida and Agra. This project is beingimplemented by J aypee who have subcontracted the work to OrientalStructural Engineers for 56km of the road and the rest is being doneby C&CConstruction Ltd.E q u i p m e n tVarious SSI equipment were used for this project. The main onesthough were 10 H6 batching plants. These large capacity plants aredesigned to operate in the harshest ofclimates and produce concretein batches of 6m3 capacities. They can produce upto a maximum of240 m" in an hour. Three H6 plants for this project were placed atDankur, Jewar each( both operated by SSI under an OMC) and twoeach at Agra and Mathura( operated by OSE).Along with these plantsover thirty Stetter transit mixers and 2 Schwing BP 1800 pumps arealso working on the project.

R e c o r d B r ea k in gOn the 16th of February,2010. The three plants operating at Dankurproduced a combined volume of 5050 m" Paving Quality Concretesetting a world record. These plants operated at zoomf/hr capacityfor 13hours straight without any errors ormalfunctions ,enabling thecustomer to pave over zkrn ofroad in a single day.

the real estate market has not bounced back to the peak levelsof 2007-08 which in turn is still affecting the ready-mixbusiness.However, we have very close interaction with the ready-mixindustries that are already showing signs of investments andexpansion plans in the coming years. This gives us immenseconfidence that India is again on its growth path and we needto gear up ourselves in meeting the upcoming demands fromthe market.Asa first step towards this, wehave acquired one more piece ofland adjacent to our existing manufacturing facilities nearChennai and we will start our construction work within theyear 2011. As always, SSI would like to move and grow withthe market and we are watchful of opportunities available forfurther investments either within or outside Chennaiwhenever necessary.I wish allour customers and readers a very happy prosperousand successful fiscal year 2011-12.

    All the best.

Aggregate cooling system at SubansiriS u b a n s ir i D a m P ro je c tThe Subansiri Dam project isa 2000MW dam under construction forNHPC Ltd. Itmeasures 116m from the bed of the Subansiri river inthe Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. It shall generate the powerusing eight Francis Turbines of 250MW capacity each. The project isscheduled to be completed by end 2012 and is the world's largestconcreting site.

E q u i p m e n tSeveral Schwing Stetter equipment are working there includingboom pumps, stationary pumps, transit mixers, shotcrete machinesand batching plants. The batching plants here are the same largecapacity H6 plants mentioned previously. Since Subansiri is a dam,the temperature ofthe aggregates is extremely important so we havesupplied the contractor, SOMA with aggregate cooling systems forcooling the aggregates.

R e c o r d B r ea k in gTwo H6 batching plants ran for 24 hours straight producing 6220cum ofdam concrete setting aworld record for the production ofdamconcrete. The team from SOMA was extremely happy with theperformance ofthese plants and also the technical inputs given bytheSchwing Stetter team that helped them produce record quantities ofconcrete.

a n d h o w t o a v o i d i tCase: Mr X of ABC pumping had a pump and he was extremelysatisfied with. The pump sent concrete upto the top floors of hisbuildings. Then one day onwards he noticed that his productivity wasdipping, the main culprit of his problem was clogged concrete in thepipelines.Clogged or choked pipelines, ie pipelines with residual concrete are aproblem in many sites. However this problem is one caused byimproper maintenance only. A few cleaning and maintenanceprocedures mentioned below will not only solve this problem easilybut also prevent this problem recurring.

M a in te n a n c e t i p s1. Clean the pipes regularly, after all operations, use the pipecleaning ball to remove any residual concrete.2. Make sure that the pipe clamping area is clear.3. Use genuine SSI clamps.4. Ensure that there are minimum fines in the concrete; the finesmust be 400kg passing through 300 microns per m",5. With continued usage, the thickness of pipe -lines varies due to

wear caused bythe friction between the aggregates and the pipes, measure the pipeline thickness regularly and replace old pipeswith new ones.6. Ensure that the concrete is well mixed in the truck mixer orbatching plant and use only uniform mixes.7. Ensure that the concrete is well mixed in the truck mixer beforeunloading in to the concrete pump hopper8. Always start pumping with a low output and increase thepumping gradually after 10-12m3 ofconcrete has been pumped.9. In case of a delay in pumping, use reverse operation pumping totake the concrete in the pipelines back to the hopper. Then mixthis concrete again and then pump.

You can see an outer ring ofconcrete because the pipe wasnot c leaned after use

Do not use i rregular aggregates oraggregates beyond the specif ied s ize l imi t

Pipe cleaning with compressed air andcleaning bal l arrangement, cleaning is alsodone with water jets and more than one ball.

V S K o n P u m p M a in ta n a n c eConcrete is considered the majoringredient in India's surging towardsrapid economic growth with rampantdevelopment of infrastructure, transport system, IT parks, etc.Equipments are developed forimproving the usefulness andefficiency in production andtransportation ofconcrete.

The present day construction industry is totally dependent onmechanization and thus any interruption in utilization of thesemachineries would not only result in incurring loss ofprofit butalso possible client goodwill resulting in erosion in business.Maintenance, therefore, plays a vital role in upkeep ofmachineries and also considered critical for deriving maximumbenefits.

Preventive maintenance techniques are evolved for conductingperiodic health check-ups on concreting equipments andgenerating information on machine condition. Nowadays theindustry is showing interest in determining the root cause offailure once the wear process began than to wait till the time ofbreakdown. These techniques can be drawn based on variousfactors like equipment operating condition, efficiency, heatdistribution, concrete quality, etc and would determine actualmean-time-to-failure or downturn in efficiency which isdetrimental to the equi pment performance.Preventive maintenance process improves equipmentavailability and also results in substantial cost saving andimproved profits. Companies that adopt these techniquessuccessfully have become more competitive and have been muchsought after in the industry.v. Senthil KumarHead - Pump Service
