Longueuil mayor, Caroline St-Hilaire, accompanied by Albert Mondor, at the first theme-based workshop at the new Marché public de Longueuil.

I f you have not yet had time to visit our public market, I invite

you to drop by as soon as you can. Set up under three big tents and four food stands (made from recycled containers), the Marché public de Longueuil is open seven days a week and offers a variety of fresh produce grown in Québec. From fruits and vegetables, through a wide range of

local products, cheeses, cold cuts and pastries, you will find everything you need right on your doorstep.

More than a simple fruit and vegetable shop, the Marché public is a bustling hub of activity where you and your family can participate in culinary workshops or watch timely horticulture demonstrations. In short,

it’s a must-visit destination, right through to October 31!

Few people realize that nearly one-quarter of our territory has agricultural zoning and that some 50 food producers run operations here. On this count too, the Marché public is a driving force for the development of this agricultural zone.

What better way to celebrate summer’s arrival than to open a new public market in our city! Your enthusiasm showed through on May 13, Mother’s Day, when the public market was inaugurated, with nearly 4,000 of you taking advantage of the day to do your shopping at the market. A great incentive to shop locally.

At this year’s inauguration of the Marché public de Longueuil, Longueuil mayor, Caroline St-Hilaire, and Pascale Tremblay, agronomist and person in charge of Éco-territoire 21 at the Bureau de l’environnement et du développement durable, had the opportunity to chat with the new merchants and residents.

Ô Gâteries A Longueuil institution famous for its croissants and Viennese pastries.

Partick Van Velzen, vegetable producerSweet corn and other fresh produce.

Potager Mont-RougeRobert Beauregard and Marielle Farley food producers: strawberries, sweet corn, tomatoes, squashes, pumpkins, and maple products.

Robert Savaria, vegetable producerSweet corn and other fresh produce.

Ti-Claude Charbonneau Local products: flowers, fruits, vegetables and fast-frozen vacuum-packed meats from an Eastern Townships food producer.

Vignobles KoblothA vineyard located in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville.

The year 2012 marks phase I of the Marché Public de Longueuil, where produce changes during the season. Schedule: open until October 31, Saturday, through Wednesday, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Thursdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Moreover, as part of the Éco-territoire 21 pilot project and in collaboration with the Ministère de l’Agriculture, we hope to turn fallow land into land for productive organic farming. This promising project will not only allow our agricultural lands to be developed while respecting natural habitats and reflecting an environmentally responsible vision, but will also open up new market outlets for local farmers and artisans’ products and ensure that the next generation has quality land available for food production.

In addition to being a thriving market niche, local agriculture is very popular with consumers and a factor in sustainable development because it reduces the number of food kilometres (the number of kilometres it takes to get food from producers to consumers). Nowadays, when residents want to know where the food they eat comes from and what is on their plate, the Éco-territoire 21 project and the Marché public represent growth-generating projects for our community. So be sure to come on out and enjoy!

We are already busy laying the groundwork for the second phase of the public market, which will include

permanent buildings open year-round. You will have the pleasure of watching our public market grow before your eyes.

For a sustainable Longueuil With the arrival of BIXI bikes

on our territory, the holding of a plenary working day on sustainable development, the drafting of a first energy policy, and the presentation of our vision of public transportation, there can be no doubt that this spring Longueuil is moving forward to ensure the harmonious development of its environment.

As part of the ongoing definition of our first sustainable development plan, I invite you all to take part in Journée Longueuil durable, a special information day to be held on June 16 at city hall. The program will feature talks and presentations to inform you about the innovative, responsible nature of this plan. It will be the perfect time for us to choose what we want for our community so that together we can shape our city’s future.

Preventing graffiti, raising awareness, reducing opportunities, and enforcing municipal by-laws: the three thrusts of Ville de Longueuil’s action plan to prevent the unsightly appearance of illegal tags and graffiti on its territory.

Work created by Monk.e et Axe and young people from the Marie-Victorin and Riverside school boards and from the Maison La Porte ouverte.

Urban art and LAWFUL graffiti to beautify our cityUrban art is a contemporary art movement that has been

gaining wider and wider acceptance and expanding dramatically in the cultural sphere of various municipalities over the past few years. Longueuil too hopes to promote this form of artistic expression and increase the opportunities available to artists to exhibit their work before the largest possible audience!

This summer, urban street and graffiti artists will have spaces where they can give free rein to their creative talents, lawfully. Ville de Longueuil will make specially identified walls available to them to serve as “canvases” for their artwork. Permanent murals will be painted in addition to these specifically identified “legal” walls. The city will also take advantage of the many events it is organizing to invite urban street artists to create a piece of artwork on site before an audience. So artists, get ready to add a touch of beauty to your city!

ILLEGAL tags and graffiti… what you can to do help us!The enforcement of the by-law respecting nuisances that was

adopted by City Council in August 2011 underscores the city’s determination to take concrete measures to eradicate illegal graffiti and tags.

There are a number of simple, effective means available for discouraging graffiti vandals, such as planting vines and bushes or installing proper lighting to limit clandestine access to the walls of your home or business.

Help us eradicate graffiti by bringing it to our attention! Call the Info-graffiti line or 911 if you witness someone committing an act of vandalism.

Ville de Longueuil

is taking action!
