hiaroscuro is an Italian term thatcombines chiaro (bright) and scuro
(dark). As commonly applied to vocaltechnique, chiaroscuro describes a tone thatis neither too light nor too dark, but is awell-balanced proportion of both. Fortonight’s program, the Idaho-WashingtonConcert Chorale is expanding the meaningof chiaroscuro to include choral tone and textcontent. Some of tonight’s selections utilizean almost exclusively lighter, brighter(chiaro) choral tone – the Renaissancecompositions of Thomas Tallis, JohnDowland, John Bennet, Luca Marenzio, andJohn Wilbye. Other pieces, especially theRussian setting of Psalm 134 by MikhailIppolitov-Ivanov and the spirituals arrangedby Adolphus Hailstork, require a darker, richer (scuro) sound. In addition, all of thetexts sung this evening are either aboutbrighter subjects – earthly love, God’s love;or darker subjects – the Crucifixion, adream about a deceased lover, loneliness, human bondage. Moreover, some of ourselections express a brighter subject with adarker sound, while others do the opposite!
I hope that you enjoy tonight’s choralchiaroscuro cornucopia. It is fitting that ourprogram includes a composition by BobChilcott who said, “The power that choir andchoir life has is huge. It can give so much tothe participants – a sense of joy, achievement, pride, comradeship, but above all the senseof being part of something that has thepotential to enrich life, both culturally andcommunally. I believe it is the responsibilityof the composer to feed this life, so thatsinging together is recognized as an essentialpart of our society.” I agree with Bob Chilcottand think that this sentiment applies toconductors as well as composers. As theIdaho-Washington Concert Chorale’s newlyappointed Music Director and PrincipalConductor, I am grateful for the opportunityto “feed this life” on the Palouse.
