Cabaret Canado School CAMPUS CONCEPT PACKAGE Architects Without Borders - Seattle appreciates the opportunity to work with The Brothers of the Sacred Heart to develop design ideas for their new school project in Cabaret, Haiti.
We envision Canados Cabaret School to be an exemplary model of a campus designed to promote community and learning among students & faculty, while also incorporating state of the art sustainable practices such as energy production and rainwater harvesting. The school will become a leader in sustainable practices. There will be a multiplier effect as the schools graduates, invested with new knowledge and practices, go out into the communities and share this information, this sustainable way of living.
The campus layout is based on the traditional Haitian concept of lakou. Whereas the urban Haitian landscapes are derived from the French and Spanish colonial grids, here we have the more topographically determined landscape and layouts of agricultural villages and informal settlements. Such arrangements group families and communities together for security, and incorporated central gathering spaces where shared facilities such as a well or a special shade tree existed. Here, in these central gathering spaces, people mingled, socialized, traded, and learned. These gathering spaces were connected by a hierarchy of pathways, linking the various spaces together.
The Cabaret School also utilizes lakou: students, faculty, and staff mingle in courtyards and exchange or debate ideas in an informal setting. They move from one courtyard to another, from one building to another, via a hierarchy of pathways. Such an arrangement promotes community, because people with like interests can gather in their neighborhood as well as the larger neighborhood. The arrangement promotes learning: learning in classrooms and learning informally in the gathering spaces, the courtyards, which is equally important to learning in a classroom setting.
The courtyards are formed by various clusters of buildings such as the professional school, the secondary school, the dormitories, and the Brothers residences. Other community buildings and spaces, such as the cafeteria with its adjacent stretched-fabric shaded eating area, the large vegetable learning garden, and the public plazas are situated centrally for all to share, including the greater Cabaret community. We envision weekend market places in the plazas, bringing the greater Cabaret and the school communities together. The auditorium is located for easy access for both the campus residents and the greater Cabaret community to utilize.
The site is eroded and dry with brush. And there are periods of intense rain. So we are invigorating the site landscape by creating new opportunities for vegetation. We are capturing rainwater to invigorate the landscape and for community use as follows:
1.We are layering living material laid horizontally across the sloped site. This layering slows down the cascade of water going down the slope in a rain, captures much of it including the sediment, allowing plant growth and water to perk into the soil, creating additional opportunities for plant growth.
2. We are also collecting rainwater in rivulets or dry stream beds that contain natural grasses and large stones. This helps control the water
in big rains and prevent erosion. As water migrates down the slope in these stream beds, it perks into the ground, and vegetation is renewed. This not only helps prevent erosion by controlling the water, but creates interesting landscapes that students can study, observe, and reflect on the natural processes of change.
3. Roofs are used to capture rainwater for community use: drinking, bathing, and cleaning. The butterfly roofs of the buildings direct the water into above ground cisterns for storage.
There is ample sunlight and free roof area to utilize solar photovoltaic technology to power the campus.
There are wetlands on the adjacent CEDAJ site and it would be beneficial for both groups to together utilize wetland wastewater treatment technology to recycle wastewater. It is important that the adjacent CEDAJ site be designed in coordination with the school to make best use of land and facilities.
We are keeping and improving the existing road through the site. The road provides opportunities to link various elements of the campus together with the public domain. There are crossings and plazas along this road, with traffic contained and controlled.
We have studied the spatial requirements required for the school and have further developed these to better understand the rooms, spaces, and uses that will be needed in each building. The schools program is still preliminary and needs to be refined. This will be critical as building designs are developed.
The design of the campus buildings reflect past Haitian culture, yet are contemporary and modern. This will be a campus that will be noteworthy nationwide. From gingerbread houses to French Colonial architecture to the historical Iron Market, our designs utilize ideas from the past that look forward to the future intricate lace details, high ceilings and transom windows, large roof overhangs, covered verandas- all creating light and airy structures with openings situated to encourage natural cooling and ventilation. The buildings themselves are constructed of reinforced concrete and masonry, and steel. Some are air conditioned. They all resist earthquakes. With proper supervision, these buildings can be built by experienced contractors utilizing local construction professionals.
Thank you,AWB-Seattle Design Team May 2015Chelsea, Mark, Dorn, Tom W., Tom V., Ian, Wesley & Buzz

This analytical plan and section were prepared to test the program for the Auditorium / Theater building. The design assumes that the Auditorium / Theater will be used primarily for drama (the performances of plays), or as a recital hall for chamber music, jazz, or popular music ensembles (involving groups of musicians performing on stage), or for school assemblies. The building could also be used for musicals, though the addition of an orchestra pit would significantly reduce seating capacity or require expansion of the facility. The proposed structure is significantly larger than the typical lecture hall; however, it is too small for grand opera or symphonic performances.
The school administration may wish to undertake similar technical studies to test the programs for other structures envisioned for the Canado Cabaret campus.
