lWhat Is a Process Analysis?

lWhen a writer lists the steps involved in how to accomplishsomething, he is outlining a process.

l A process can be a series of actions, changes, steps, operations,or functions that achieve a particular end or result. A process essayfocuses on the “how” rather than the “what.” If the audience is not

well informed about the subject, the process will have to bedetailed. If the audience is well informed, then the process willhave more technical vocabulary and less detail.

lSome process essays provide information while others providesteps on how to do something.

l Whether the essay provides information or tells someone how todo something, the essay must follow a logical procedure. All itemsmust follow an order, such as what you do first, second, and third.

•Things to do if you have flu (How to recover the

flu)

•Braimstorming

•What do you do when you have the flu? •Drink lots of fluids (water hot tea etc.)

•Take medicine

•Get plenty of sleep •See the doctor



•Topic Sentence: Recovering from the flu may

not be easy but there are several things that you

can do to help relieve the symptoms.

lHow to Write a Process Analysis

Paper Step one: Choose an interesting and informative topic. Thereare a wide variety of topics dealing with an invention, a scientificprocess, a mechanical process, or a natural process.

lExamples: lHow was the universe formed?lHow did the American Civil War begin?lHow was penicillin invented?lHow is liquor made?lHow does one fix a carburetor?lHow can one make an enchilada?



lStep two:2. Divide the process into a few main steps and describe

each step clearly, making sure that all essential technical

terminology is defined.The pattern of a Process Analysis paragraph looks like this,

with all steps arranged in proper order:

lStep three:

l Show the end result of the process.

lPresent the process your attitude towards the process.

lTell why you tell the process: What will the reader do at the end?
