400V SiC MOSFET cuts switchinglosses by up to 90%

ROHM Semiconductor’s portfolio of SiC MOSFETs

ROHM Semiconductor has announcedthe introduction of the SCTMU001F, a400V N-channel Silicon Carbide (SiC)power MOSFET which is ideal for use inaudio applications such as speaker drivercircuits. The SCTMU001F is rated for amaximum continuous current of 20A.

This new part extends ROHM’s portfolio of SiCMOSFETs, which already includes a number of1,200V-rated devices. ROHM also supplies theindustry’s first SiC MOSFET co-packaged witha discrete anti-parallel SiC Schottky barrierdiode, the 1,200V SCH2080KE.

All t he ROHM SiC MOSFETs offer a reductionin switching losses of as much as 90% whencompared to silicon devices with a similarpower rating. This is due to the absence of tailcurrent and the fast recovery performance ofthe body diode, features which are inherent tothe SiC structure of the devices.

When implemented in power-systemdesigns, these SiC MOSFETs provide forincreased switching frequency, thus enablingthe use of smaller, cheaper and lightercapacitors and inductors.

The superior switching performance of theROHM SiC MOSFETs also results in higherefficiency. In many applications, this enablesdesigners to do away with complex andexpensive liquid or forced-air cooling systems, and replace them with smaller, lighter passiveair-cooled heat-sinks.

100V power MOSFET provides performance breakthroughin telecoms applications

The introduction by InternationalRectifier of its latest 100V FastIRFET™

power MOSFET provides a performancebreakthrough to the designers of DC-DCpower supplies used in telecomsdevices and equipment.

MULTI-TECH SYSTEMS

The cellular or mobile telephone modem is widely used inindustrial applications to provide a wireless gateway to theinternet. In fact, wireless Machine-to-Machine (M2M)communication has given the world an extraordinaryproductivity boost, enabling the manufacturers and owners ofalmost any kind of machine to add useful functionality, reduceoperating expenses and improve efficiencies.

For instance, equipping a nationwide fleet of vending machines withcellular modems provides the following benefits:• The operator can remotely monitor each vending machine’s status and

health, allowing for intervention with preventive maintenance before itbreaks down.

• The operator can set the route that drivers follow each day so thatthey are only serving machines that are almost empty. Thisdramatically increases the number of machines that one driver canserve, and allows more machines to be deployed at no additional cost.

• The machine can automatically report any emergency or failure to acentral control unit, often before it is discovered locally. This enablesoperators to schedule a visit by a repair crew immediately, thusreducing downtime and increasing revenue.

At the same time, the vending machine’s local host avoids the securityrisk entailed in providing a wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to its localarea network. Third-party machines are known to provide a potentialentry point for malware.

The cellular router (modem) offers a robust, reliable interface to mobilephone networks; normally a router is specified for use only on a 2Gnetwork, or on either a 2G or 3G network. Demand for 4G (LTE)capability is also on the rise for applications with a requirement for veryhigh data rates, for instance for high-definition video streaming.

For the designer and manufacturer of the equipment which hosts therouter, its prime benefit is that it is extremely easy to bolt on to a new orexisting system design. All that is required is a DC power supply and acommunications interface to the host. Typically, this would be viaEthernet or RS-232. Produced as a sealed unit with mounting lugs, it issupplied fully approved by carriers for use on specified cellular networks, and with all necessary certifications such as FCC, in North America, anda CE mark, for use in Europe.

Cellular router suppliers are now also starting to add wirelessinterfaces to their products: a modem equipped with a Wi-Fi interfacemay be useful in certain applications, such as digital signage or vendingmachine installations, in which access to a wired connection isinconvenient, impracticable or prohibited by IT staff for security reasons.Wi-Fi also provides a simple way to reduce costs, because it allows acellular connection to be shared by multiple devices. In addition, Bluetoothis useful in applications such as in-home patient monitoring equipment.

Lifetime cost advantageWhile Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections are typically only available inmore advanced routers, the basic functions of a cellular router are wellprovided for by a wide choice of reputable manufacturers. The maingrounds for differentiating between one M2M cellular gateway andanother, then, is likely to come down to long-term supply commitment, configurability and cost. And here a new family of routers from Multi-Techchanges the equation through a combination of reduced operating costsand optimised hardware configurations.

Free remote managementAlongside the release of the MultiConnect rCell 100 series of cellularrouters, see Figure 1, Multi-Tech has also introduced the industry’s firstworldwide, full-featured, remote device enablement platform that iscompletely free for the life of the router. The Multi-Tech Device Managerservice enables the equipment operator to remotely manage and upgradean entire fleet of routers from a single control centre.

Table 1: A comparison of lifetime costs of a fleet of 750 Multi-Tech 3G cellular routers against 3G routersfrom three competing suppliers

Adding to the cost advantage of the MultiConnect rCell 100 family is theavailability of variants to meet different requirements in terms ofgeographical coverage, connectivity features and data rate. This meansthat OEMs can choose a variant which closely matches their need, opening up new geographical markets or segments quickly and easilywithout paying for unnecessary features.

High specification, lowest lifetime costAfter more than 20 years of supplying high-performance wired andwireless M2M communications gateways, Multi-Tech has won areputation for the reliable performance and robust construction of itsproducts. With the introduction of its remote Device Managerenablement service and the optimised hardware designs around its newrCell 100 platform, it is now able to offer an affordable combination ofsuperior performance and features.

It can be used to:• Remotely upgrade the firmware of a router• Remotely change a router’s configuration or set-up• Monitor the router’s status, notifications and performance• View the location of GPS-enabled routers

By eliminating the need for a technician to inspect or fix a router on-site,the Multi-Tech Device Manager service dramatically extends up-time andreduces service costs.

And because the Multi-Tech service is completely free, it can providelarge cost savings over the lifetime of a fleet of routers, as shown inTable 1.

Connectivity & The Internet of ThingsThis Application Spotlight brings to the fore some importantchanges to the choice of RF chips and modules available todesigners implementing both long-range and short-rangecommunications systems. These changes are being driven bysoaring demand from industrial equipment manufacturers, which can see scope to derive huge benefits from connectingalmost every kind of machine, from tiny sensorsto vast air-conditioning fans, to the internet. Thistrend goes by various names: many will befamiliar with Machine-to-Machine (M2M)communication, but the term now in vogue is the‘internet of things’. Whatever you call it, thepromise is of improved control, remotemanagement, networked interaction betweendifferent types of machines and, ultimately, greater value for the end-user.

In some cases, internet connectivity for M2Mcalls for very high data rates. In commercial, licensed, frequency bands for wide-areanetworking, cellular module manufacturers havetherefore recently begun to offer LTE technology. LTE cellularnetworks have been available to consumers for over a yearalready. Now industrial users can enjoy the 100Mbits/sdownlink, and 50Mbits/s uplink, data rates that smartphoneusers already enjoy, when they use the latest AirPrime modulesfrom Sierra Wireless, as featured on page 17.

This issue of FTM also features the remarkable LoRa™

technology from Semtech, shown on page 19. The LoRa

modulation scheme can achieve a range of more than 15kmwhen operating in the unlicensed ISM frequency bands. Thiscompares to the 2km range typically offered by transceiversusing FSK modulation. LoRa thus dramatically extends thecoverage achievable with a low-cost private network, whileusing fewer radio repeaters.

In Personal Area Networking (PAN), the chiefconcern is not range, but power. And here, thenew Bluetooth Smart, also known as Bluetooth4.0, technology offers a big breakthrough.Building on the wide consumer acceptance ofprevious Bluetooth technologies, and offering thesame promise of interoperability betweenhundreds of different manufacturers’ products,Bluetooth 4.0 provides a means to implement lowdata-rate wireless connectivity over a distance ofa few metres, while drawing minuscule amountsof power.

STMicroelectronics has introduced perhaps thesimplest and most integrated approach to

Bluetooth 4.0 implementation: its BlueNRG chip, featured on page16, combines a Bluetooth 4.0 radio, a controller and protocolsoftware to give a complete platform for new PAN designs.

News about these and many other new product introductionsin the arena of connectivity is contained in the followingApplication Spotlight section. For more information and supporton any of these products, please contact your local branch ofFuture Electronics.

ISM-band transceiver IC uses new modulation technologyto extend range up to 15km

Semtech has introduced the SX1272, atransceiver which uses new Long Range(LoRa™) modulation technology toproduce dramatic range improvementscompared to transceivers using othermodulation methods.

The maximum distance today of a smart-metertransceiver in Europe using FSK modulation is2km. The SX1272, using LoRa under the sameconditions and regulatory limits, can transmitmore than 15km.

The additional range provided by LoRa eliminatesthe need for radio repeaters, significantlysimplifying system design and lowering the totalcost of deployment.

The SX1272, which operates in the 860-1,020MHz frequency range, achieves receiversensitivity of up to -137dBm when paired witha low-cost crystal. By comparison, today’sstate-of-the-art FSK devices can achievesensitivity of just -115dBm with a comparablecrystal or -125dBm when using an expensivetemperature-controlled crystal oscillator.

Additionally, the SX1272 offers a 25dBimprovement over FSK devices in in-bandinterference rejection. This makes the deviceespecially effective in ISM-band applications

such as security and metering, because itprovides immunity from LTE mobile phonesignals at frequencies below 1GHz. Thisimmunity, combined with the SX1272’s highlylinear RF front-end, makes it the most reliableand robust solution for operating in thepresence of strong interfering signals.

The SX1272 supports GFSK, FSK, GMSK,and OOK modulation in addition to LoRa. Itsupports WMBus, IEEE 802.15.4g (SUN), FCC15.247, ARIB T96/108 and EN 300-220 aswell as other standards and regulations.

Sensor-enabled RFID tags extend wirelessdata-logging beyond identification

ams supplies two RFID tags whichfeature on-board sensing capabilities, enabling designers to combine wirelessidentification with environmentalsensing in a single device. The SL13Aand SL900A support a simple, low-costimplementation of a new class ofwireless data-logging applications.

The SL13A is an ISO15693-compliant tag foruse with Near Field Communications (NFC-V)and High-Frequency Radio-FrequencyIdentification (HF RFID) readers. The SL900A isan EPC Gen 2 Class-3 tag for use with RFIDreaders.

The devices include an on-boardtemperature sensor accurate to ±0.5% and aninterface to an external sensor, which may beused to log environmental conditions such ashumidity, air pressure or ambient light.

Both devices can operate in passive,battery-less, mode. In this mode, the tagharvests energy from a reader’s broadcast, using the power to read the temperature, ordata from an external sensor, and transmitsthe information back to the reader togetherwith a unique ID. The data may be time-stamped by the reader.

The SL13A and SL900A can also bepowered by a single-cell or 3V battery. Inbattery-assisted passive mode, the tag’s on-

board real-time clock is enabled, and can beused to trigger periodic sensor readings. Thetags provide for very long battery life, drawinga typical 1.6µA in stand-by mode with the real-time clock running.

Up to 762 (SL13A) or 841 (SL900A) time-stamped events may be saved in the on-chipEEPROM, from where they may be read whenthe device is in range of a reader. Both theSL13A and SL900A feature a serial peripheralinterface for connection to a microcontroller.

The combination of a sensor interface, NFCcompatibility and support for passive modeoffers designers the opportunity to invent newkinds of wireless data-logging applications, orto find better ways to implement existing data-logging systems.

Efficiency is one of the most important parameters by whichspecifiers and users evaluate hydraulic pumps. The demandfor higher efficiency has led pump manufacturers to adoptsophisticated new topologies and control techniques in thepump’s motor, and these designs call for new approaches tothe pump’s power stage. Piotr Pupar, Technical SolutionsManager, Future Electronics (Poland) explains.

This article examines one of the ways in which power semiconductormanufacturers are attempting to meet the power-system designer’s needs:the Integrated Power Module (IPM), a device type which is squarelyaimed at Europe’s vast market for industrial electric motors. In theory, amodule dramatically simplifies the design process for the pumpmanufacturer, removing the need to create a complicated power circuitcontaining tens of discrete components. But is there sufficient availability ofoff-the-shelf solutions to meet the diverse needs of pump manufacturers?

Authorities push for higher efficiencyCirculator pumps with hydraulic power of <2,500W are in use in tens ofmillions of homes and offices around the world, chiefly in central heatingand water distribution systems. The combined energy use of such a vastnumber of devices makes a large contribution to the world’sconsumption of electricity, and therefore of fossil fuels: it is estimatedthat these pumps consume approximately 50TWh of energy each year.

With good reason, then, the European Union (EU) sees great scopefor energy savings if it can bring about improvements to the operatingefficiency of these widely used types of pump. Indeed, a 2009 EUregulation, directive 2005/32/EC, requires pump manufacturers toimprove efficiency, reaching an Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) score lowerthan 0.27 in 2013, and down to 0.23 by 2015.

Pump manufacturers’ main strategy for achieving these targets is theapplication of advanced electronic control techniques, which offerreductions in energy use of as much as 80% compared to traditionalmotor designs.

AC induction motors are less efficientThe designer of a hydraulic system must select a pump that will operateat highest efficiency when the hydraulic load is at its highest. It followsthat the pump is less efficient when the hydraulic load falls belowmaximum. Efficiency is therefore reduced if the pump works at aconstant speed appropriate for the maximum load.

Traditionally, hydraulic system designers have therefore specifiedvariable-speed asynchronous AC induction motors, which are still inwidespread use. This motor type, however, is inherently far less efficientthan modern Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs). Thesetypes of motors are also commonly described as electronicallycommutated motors: they require a complex control scheme to matchthe current through the stators to the position of the magnets affixed tothe rotor, in such a way as to maximise torque.

Since PMSMs can usually run at higher speeds than traditional ACinduction motors, a smaller pump is required to support any givenhydraulic load. Pump manufacturers also find PMSM systems easier toassemble and more reliable than AC induction motors.

The typical topology of a PMSM’s power stage is shown in Figure 1.An input rectifier and a 3-phase inverter supplies the motor. Thealgorithms implementing the commutation scheme are usually run by aDSP or microcontroller; application-specific standard parts for motorcontrol are also available from suppliers such as Fairchild Semiconductor.

A new generation of IPMsThe heart of a sophisticated PMSM is its control unit, and the controlscheme that it executes. This will occupy by far the largest part of themanufacturer’s design effort, and will be the key to its success in fulfillingthe requirements of regulations such as 2005/EC/32.

At the same time, however, the power circuit for a PMSM, as shown inFigure 1, is by itself a complex circuit that consists of many individualcomponents. In an industrial or residential pump, this circuit typicallyneeds to be reliable, robust and compact while meeting a tight pricetarget. Achieving this by designing a circuit from scratch calls for a hugeinvestment of design time and effort.

This is why power semiconductor suppliers such asSTMicroelectronics, Fairchild and International Rectifier (IR) have steppedinto the market with ranges of off-the-shelf power supplies suitable forpump motors. These smart power modules usually integrate thefollowing blocks in a single package, as shown in Figure 2:• a power stage consisting of six IGBTs or MOSFETs and six

freewheeling diodes• a driver network containing three high-voltage gate drivers with gate

resistors and bootstrap diodes• protection circuits, for over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current and

At first glance, these devices look rather similar to each other. In fact, however, there are important differences between the IPMs that providea valuable element of choice for the pump manufacturer. Users candistinguish between the modules in particular in terms of: • voltage tolerance• size• autonomous protection features

Voltage toleranceAs the tables show, the modules from Fairchild and IR use a MOSFETas the power switching device; ST’s SLLIMM-nano uses an IGBT. Theuse of an IGBT enables the SLLIMM-nano to withstand a higher voltageof 600V which provides greater assurance to the designer that the pumpwill cope with over-voltage events without failing. A counterbalance tothis observation is the lower isolation voltage, 1,000V compared to the1,500V available in the SPM 5 series and the µIPM modules.

No heat-sink requiredThe modules also have a quite marked difference in size, at the systemlevel. The µIPM devices from IR are produced in a PQFN package, which is just 12mm x 12mm. This is already small, but this does notprovide the biggest space saving. In fact, the QFN package offers verygood thermal performance, and as a result the µIPM modules can drivea motor up to around 100W with no external heat-sink, as shown inFigure 3; according to STMicroelectronics, the same is true of theSLLIMM-nano modules.

In compact pumps, the elimination of this bulky component provides aconsiderable advantage over competing surface-mount packages thatrequire a heat-sink to be assembled on top of the device.

mps: how to select a suitable moduleThe SLLIMM™-nano IPM from STMicroelectronics, shown in Figure 2, issuitable for applications up to 100W. In fact, most circulator pumpapplications are specified for applications in the range 50-150W. This isthe target for IPMs from other suppliers as well, including Fairchild andIR, which provide IPMs offering a similar level of integration to theSLLIMM-nano devices, Fairchild with its Motion SPM® 5 series, and IR withits µIPM™ Integrated Power Modules, as shown in the Tables 1, 2 and 3.

As the tables show, all the modules integrate a number of protectionfeatures, which are essential to reliable operation. There is a difference inthe implementation of these protection features, however. Both theSLLIMM-nano and the µIPM devices implement protectionindependently of the controller, such as an MCU or DSP, and can switchthemselves off when necessary. The Fairchild SPM 5 series, on the otherhand, requires an external op amp to provide a feedback signal to the

controller. The Fairchilddevices also require an opamp for temperature sensingand protection.

STMicroelectronics has aclever approach to thisfunction in its STGIPN3H60. Inits Smart Shut-Down feature,an internal fault comparatormonitors for over-current,short-circuit and over-temperature conditions. If afault occurs, the device will beswitched off and a fault signalsent to the controller. Thisprovides for instant shut-down, without suffering fromlatency due to the cycling ofthe controller’s processor core.

ConclusionThe smart IPMs availabletoday provide a ready-madepower stage that matches the50W to 150W rating of thecirculator pumps mostcommonly used today. They

can simplify the design of the electrical drive circuit, and make it smaller, more robust and efficient. Importantly, they are also supported bycomprehensive design resources, including data sheets, application

notes, referencedesigns andevaluationboards, enablingmanufacturers toreliably find thebest device fortheir application.
