Problem Statement

There is a need to design a measurement system that will test physician competency in anesthetizing and maintaining patients during surgery.

Specific Aims

• To evaluate the need for the Human Patient Simulator.

• To evaluate current methods for measuring physician competency in surgical anesthesia.

• To propose an improved design to measure physician competency.

Current Testing Methods

• Screen-based computer simulators– Anesthesia Simulator-Recorder

• Theatre-type simulators– Leiden Anesthesia Simulator– Comprehensive Anesthesia Simulation

Environment – Human Patient Simulator

Evaluation Method

• Based on Military Procedural Evaluations

• Combines Objective Measurement and Subjective Evaluation

• Results are presented in a standard report format.

Objective Measurements

• Vital Signs Recorded from Patient Simulator

• Objective Score Based on Vital Signs Outside of 20% of Baseline

Subjective Measurement• Report format is designed to include a subjective

physician evaluation.• Audio comments are recorded on video of

simulation.• Standard Report Form

– Objective measurement filled automatically– Audio comments referenced for playback– Total score combines subjective and objective

evaluation

Conclusion

Simulation with a standard format for reporting objective and subjective measurements will provide a more efficient testing method for physician competency in surgical anesthesia.
