COMPARING ANCIENT ROME TO BARRHAVEN

PROBLEMS:

-The term ‘compare’- similarities or differences?

- What platform to use… Visual aids and explanations

- Maps… Real maps of ancient Rome… Maps of Barrhaven

BARRHAVEN- A SUBURB OF OTTAWA

ANTIUM, OSTIA AND VEII- SUBURBS OF ROME

FIRST I COMPARED IMPORTANCE• In relation to Rome, Ostia was a very important harbour and trading port for Rome. This

was a quick and easy place to bring trade goods to, and bring in mainland to Rome.

• Veii was an old Etruscan city which was large beautiful and important, it was much of a status city and considered as a possibility to be the new Rome when Rome was taken in a battle. It contributed largely to the production of terracotta statues.

Barrhaven has no importance to Ottawa, it is merely a suburb with housing for people to live. There is some farming but not enough to ‘feed the masses’, even before the more major development the farming wasn’t too substantial.

I ALSO LOOKED AT THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE CITY AND SUBBURBS • Ostia is approximatly 30 km away from Rome

• Veii is approximately 16 km away from Rome

• Barrhaven is approximately 26 km away from Ottawa

• Locations of Forum, temples, and public buildings. (Public buildings according to Virtruvius are defensive, religious and utilitarian)
