2.4.8 IT DEPARTMENT

The IT department of Roots is said to be one of the corporate departments. All the servers,

controls and machine are located at the Coimbatore head office of Roots. The ERP that was used

in Roots around 5 years back was called the Intuitive ERP MRP 9000 Which was completely

based on MS Access database backend. The main shortcoming of this ERP system came down.

Hence from April 2011, SAP was implemented in RMCL alone and is now in the introduction

phase across Roots group of companies. They have a separate SAP maintenance team which

provides internal team which provides internal support while the external support is provided by

Bosch for RIL alone.

There are 3 types of servers that are maintained – the development server which hold 6

months historical data that is mainly used for testing purposes and development uses. The next

server is production server that houses the central database and is the main repository of all

company data and the 3rd server is the application server on which the various applications such

as SAP etc run. This server is mainly used for load balancing for the production server.

Coming to the network, Roots previously had a leased line network whose speed was limited

to 512 Kbps and the cost of this network was very high. Currently Roots has implemented ISDN

for managerial network which works on a Radio frequency network attaining a maximum speed

of 12 Mbps. The internal network is connected through VPN and the LAN connections are made

through a single RF network.

Data backups of the critical company data is taken on weekly, monthly and quarterly basis.

bring it under in-house team responsibility.

Page 18: company profile of roots india limited

FORTIGATE firewall which provides security during browsing and for internal purposes and the

2nd one is the WATCHDOG firewall which is extensively used for securing mails and VPN

connections. Internal audits are regularly conducted by the IT Department to rule out any

software licensing issues and for installation and up gradation of antivirus software in all

desktops in the premises.
