GES Case StudyA global events company based in Coventry is investing in the skills of its staff after

joining forces with one of the UK’s leading education and training providers.

GES is a global events company with over 50 locations in the U.S., 10 in Canada, and 20 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. They specialise in bringing brands and customers closer together through events and exhibitions.

GES in Silverstone Drive is helping two team members to progress up the career ladder. Phil Burrows and Sara Hargreaves are working with assessors from PET-Xi Training after signing up for framework in business administration.

Gary Drake, head of contracts at PET-Xi Training at Westwood Business Park, said upskilling programmes are the most effective and popular choice of work-based training.

“Over the last 23 years, we have worked with over 150,000 learners and we are finding that more and more businesses are willing to invest in the training and development of their employees,” he said.

“GES is a perfect example. They deliver events, exhibitions and event management on the global stage with a team of 3,800 worldwide.

“Their standards are high and we have started working with GES to provide their team members with the opportunity to improve their qualifications and increase their skill set.

“As Phil and Sara are proving, the positive impact is that it leads to higher retention rates, a boost in productivity and improves standards of work.

“Phil and Sara are both working really hard to fit in their studies around their jobs and are working with a dedicated assessor and team leader to complete the 12-18 month programme.

“They have a choice of 50 different units to choose from which are bespoke to their roles within GES and they are both developing different skills which will benefit their careers and their company.”

Phil, a floor planning department supervisor, is head of a team of nine who are focused on compiling floor plans for shows throughout the UK as well as Europe, Australia and Asia.

He said: “Our team is involved in around 400 shows a year including Gardeners World, Auto Sport and Good Food and it is important the floor plans are right for visitor flow to ensure each event is a success.

“The framework has involved quite a lot of research into the principles of business and looking after staff. It has been useful because it has emphasised the importance of listening to your colleagues and getting your points of view across in a way which is understandable as well as putting the research into practice.

Sara, ServiCentre Manager who manages 22 direct reports and oversees a 45-strong on-site team, works on over 400 shows each year as well as dealing with customer queries, providing expert advice, processing orders for core services and delivering customer service in the office and at the shows.

She said: “The qualification has been a useful platform to better understand best business practice and methodology in applying this across my team. Training and quality assurance is an integral part of our team and the framework has also assisted in looking at other avenues for deploying this across the ServiCentre.”
