Pipeline RehabilitationWithin the APS Pipeline Rehabilitation Division we are able to provide turnkey service to our customers in the utility, power, oil and gas industries. The choice of the most suitable pipeline rehabilitation system depends upon which performance parameters the pipe fails to meet and why the failures occur. Criteria like; condition of the existing pipeline, requirements for the desired performance, hydraulic capacity and structural design data, as well as nancial considerations have to be taken into account. Since there is no single solution that covers each and every pipeline rehabilitation project, APS prides itself in providing a very broad range of pipeline rehabilitation methods from which we can oer a tailor-made solution tting the specic circumstances of the project. Compact Pipe is one of these solutions.

The Compact Pipe system belongs to the technique family Close-t lining. With this process the new inserted pipe is brought in close contact with the inner wall of the host pipe. The result of this close-fit l ining is a structurally independent pipe with the quality and durability of a newly installed pipe.

Compact Pipe, a system owned by Wavin, is a unique system for trenchless rehabilitation of water and gas pipelines. This technology is specically developed in cases where there are space limitations and can be installed in heavy trac areas, where open trench construction is not possible.

COMPACT PIPE TechnologyCompact Pipe is a close-t lining technique for damaged utilities, ranging from sewers to gas-, water and industrial lines. The pipe itself is a continuous string of polyethylene pipe, folded into a 'C' shape along its length. This compact shape is created during manufacturing, when the pipe, while it is still hot, is folded. It is supplied from the manufacturing plant wound on a drum. Through its folded shape, the pipe has become substantially smaller in cross sectional area, allowing it to be easily inserted into the existing pipeline.

Compact Pipe is made from regular polyethylene, PE80 or PE100, and is available in diameters ranging from 100 to 500 mm. Dierent wall thicknesses/SDR classes are available for each diameter fullling the various requirements in terms of e.g. coverage, groundwater table and internal pressure.

The pipe is designed to be an independent liner capable to bear all loads itself and, in case it is applied as a pressure pipe liner, is classied as Class A. Compact Pipe is coiled on drums. The pipe length per drum depends on the nominal diameter.

Installation Guidance COMPACT PIPEOn site the pipe is taken directly from the drum, which for that purpose usually is held by a dispensing unit on a trailer. The winch cable can be connected to the pulling head xed to the pipe. The pipe's axial exibility allows direct insertion via small sized access points, such as manholes in the case of sewers, thus avoiding any excavation work and becoming a true no-dig method.

Once pulled in, the ends are sealed and a purposely built installation unit is activated supplying steam and compressed air. Steam is fed into the pipe to trigger o the memory of the plastic, making the pipe revert to its original 'o' shape. Subsequently, pressurised air is used, to make the pipe close tting with the inside bore of the existing pipeline. The result is a new structurally self-supporting pipeline inside the old deteriorated one.
