2012 annual report

The Council of Michigan Foundations

thanks you for the opportunity to be

your partner as you advance your work

and achieve your mission. This past

year was a busy one, filled with many

activities and programs that connected

you with resources, professional

development, networking, advocacy,

knowledge, and a community of your

peers including:

• The Community Foundations Retreat

• The 12th Biennial Family Foundations

Retreat

• Essential Skills and Strategies for New

Grantmakers offered in Detroit and

Grand Haven

• The Biennial Corporate Giving Survey

• Passing legislation to exempt Charitable

Gift Annuities from state taxes

• Innovative toolkits on College

Readiness, Rural Transfer of Wealth,

Bridging the Generations for Family

Foundations and Lucy Bernholz’s

Navigating the New Social Economy

• The Mentor Program, nurturing new

leaders through our Michigan Forum

for African Americans in Philanthropy

• Raising awareness statewide with

Opinion Editorials published on public

private partnerships, philanthropy’s

support for education and the

importance of the charitable tax

deduction

These accomplishments—and many

others—would not be possible without a

dynamic staff and an engaged Board of

Trustees under the leadership of David

2Sebastian (past chair) and Brenda Hunt

(current chair). This 2012 Annual Report

highlights our year and features member

perspectives on a variety of programs.

It has also been a year of staff transition

as we expanded our capacity to

increase our membership and to better

meet member needs. We are pleased

to welcome two new leaders to our

team: Cathy Merritt, vice president of

Membership Development and Debbie

McKeon, senior vice president of

Member Services.

At the Annual Members Meeting at

the Annual Conference, we welcomed

Marsha Smith from Rotary Charities

of Traverse City to complete the term

of Susan Broman, formerly from the

Steelcase Foundation, and four new

trustees—Jim McHale, W.K. Kellogg

Foundation; Eileen Curtis, Bay Area

Community Foundation; Ellie Frey,

Frey Foundation, and Tonya Allen, The

Skillman Foundation.

These new trustees will continue the

work of term limited trustees Carol Goss,

Sterling Speirn, Dave Sebastian and

David Page. We thank them for their

service and for beginning our journey

to ensure that CMF remains the number

one investment that you can make for

the future of philanthropy in Michigan.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and

staff, we thank you for your support and

look forward to working with you in the

coming year.

INTERGENERATIONAL TOOLKIT

Bridging the Generations: A Guide for Family Foundations

Bridging the Generations: A Guide for Family Foundations“The Values Inventory exercise from the toolkit sparked a

deep discussion among our Board. We reflected on our

past but, more importantly, it spurred us to look ahead

to where we wanted to be in the future. This strategic

discussion helped put everyone on the same page and

will be an important touchstone for us moving forward.

In a word, this was phenomenal.”

~ Jenee Velasquez, executive director,

Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation

“CMF’s focus is Michigan and that is vitally important

to us. Whether we’re working collaboratively with

others or simply on our own work, the family of CMF

is collectively working toward a common goal – to

strengthen the state in which we live and work.”

~ Carolyn Bloodworth, secretary/treasurer,

Consumers Energy Foundation

Peer Action Learning Network“The Peer Action Learning Network moved the Ruth

Mott Foundation from rhetoric about diversity and

inclusion into action on a very personal scale. Guided

by a knowledgeable team of facilitators, the PALN

experience both informed and challenged us over a

sustained period of time, bringing out the best in me,

my team, and my CMF peers.”

collaborationState of Opportunity: The Road Ahead for Michigan“This symposium surfaced

a strong desire by diverse

grantmakers to come

together and find new,

creative and workable ways

to define, understand and

close the opportunity gaps

that now exist in our state.

And that gives me hope for

Michigan.”

~ Karen Aldridge-Eason,

Governor’s Office of

Foundation Liaison

Green and Blue Network Action Fund“Our vision for the fund

is to provide a vehicle

that would make it easier

for small foundations to

work together to support

projects of common

interest. We can do the

work much more easily

if we join together and

pool our resources for

maximum impact.”

community12th Biennial Family Foundations Retreat“I really enjoy the opportunity to talk

with other family foundation members

and learn what they are doing. Just

being with people who share our

beliefs and dedication to philanthropy

is uplifting. CMF does a wonderful job

of bringing us together.”

~ Elizabeth Welch Lykins, trustee,

James C. and Jane N. Welch Foundation

Community Foundation Retreat“I highly value the Community Foundation retreats. The

fact that you learn a lot about current trends is important,

but even more critical to me is the opportunity to come

together with peers and informally share information and

ideas on issues that we all have in common. That’s where

the real learning takes place and it is great to be part of a

community that extends far beyond the day of the retreat.”

~ Dennis W. Fliehman, president & CEO,

Capital Region Community Foundation

Michigan Forum for African Americans in Philanthropy“The Forum has created a new, diverse professional

network which is a highly valued resource for its

members and a unique, connected “asset” for the

philanthropic community in Michigan. The Forum’s

mentoring initiative focuses much needed attention

and action on the development of future leaders,

challenging us to think about diversity in new

and different ways, which is vital to the future of

philanthropy in our state.“

Summer Youth Leadership Conference“Being part of the summer

conference has helped me realize

how much I, even as a young adult,

can actually make a difference. It is

amazing to understand that I have

something important to say and to

receive tools and resources from

summer conference to do just that!”

voiceFoundations on the Hill“For me, Foundations on the Hill was a rich

networking experience that not only broadened

my perspective from both the state and national

level, but it allowed me one more opportunity

to connect with the Michigan congressional

delegation and enhance the work The Wege

Foundation has already been doing through

Great Lakes on the Hill. Multiple messages,

multiple paths – critical to our work.”

~ Ellen Satterlee, CEO, Wege Foundation

Advocacy“As we were considering our role in advocacy and public policy, Rob Collier met with our

board to help us better understand the parameters. Rob’s guidance gave us a framework

that ultimately led to a new policy that has moved us forward, making Rotary Charities

much more thoughtful about our role and effective in our response.”
