THE oFFiCE oF THE prESiDEnT

For the Next GenerationBY PRESIDENT JOHN MAURICE

MiD-ATlAnTiC CHriSTiAn UniVErSiTY is filled with excitement! Students are excited about Christ, eager to learn and grow, build-ing friendships, supporting Mustang athletics, worshipping God during chapel services, and volunteering in our community as the hands and feet of Jesus. There is a spiritual buzz on campus this year – culminating in five baptisms this semester alone!

The majority of our students today come from what is referred to as Generation Z. They are very different from students who enrolled here in 1948, some of whom are remembered as “The Greatest Generation.” In fact, they are very different from the students that enrolled in the mid-seventies when I was a student. Our Generation Z students have been nurtured by omnipresent, optimistic, and focused parents. They have never known a world without computers, cellphones, or tablets. Students feel enormous academic pressure and are driven to succeed like no previous generation. They have always had access to instantaneous information at the touch of a button. They are more diverse than any other generation. In fact, George

Beall’s article 8 Differences Between Gen Z and Millennials notes that “kids today have more in common with their global peers than they do with adults in their own country.” (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/george-beall/8-key-differences-between_b_12814200.html)

Whether we were from the Greatest Generation, Baby Boomers, Gen-X, Millennials, or Gen-Z, Psalm 145 is relevant to our lives. David writes, “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts” (Ps. 145:4). The greatness and majesty of our God must be passed from one generation to another. The gospel is for all people in every generation and in every location. The Great Commission is a command for Christians to “make disciples” of all nations (Matt. 28:19).

In Winning the Next Generation for Christ (Dec. 26, 2017), author Becky Fischer cites a Barna Study and concludes that “only 10% of Americans possess a biblical worldview.” She says that the Millennial Generation is “the most biblically illiterate generation in American History.”

The mission of Mid-Atlantic is “to impact the world for Christ by transforming ordinary people into extraordinary Christian leaders.” Students preparing for ministry in the church or the marketplace are “set for the defense of the gospel” so that they can impact a new generation for Christ (Philippians 1:17).

Through your partnership with Mid-Atlantic, a new generation of leaders is being educated. Students are being challenged to transform their minds, obey the Scriptures, live out the gospel, and share the good news. It happens in the classrooms, the dormitories, discipleship groups, the cafeteria, and Muddy Waters Coffeehouse. This generation of students is being prepared to tell their generation . . . and the next generation of the mighty acts of God (Psalm 145:4).

Faithful until He comes,John W. Maurice

At MACU I have found people who believe in me and see worth and potential where I saw shame and depression. Here I have experienced God in a beautifully unique and deeply personal way at my own pace. I am currently a youth minister and a full-time student seeking a degree in Cross-Cultural Ministry. I want to travel to the edge of the world spreading the Gospel and also to start two non-profit businesses, one for adults with special needs and one for the millions of kids stuck in a broken foster system. I cannot stress my gratitude enough for the love and encouragement to dream big.

The conference, being held at the University of Presov in the Republic of Slovakia, develops the topics of “Economics and Economic Practice - Analysis and Trends” and “Sustainable Development and the Environment.” MACU is proud of Dr. Skultety as he represents the university and a Christian worldview in the important areas of economics and the environment.

New Programs Start Fall 2019MACU HAS AlWAYS trained preachers and at various times has offered a concentration, a major, and/or a minor in preaching. We are pleased to announce the return of a formal program. Starting fall 2019, students may enroll in a preaching minor program or in a preaching concentration within the ministry major.

Two other new programs are a biopsychology major and a Human Resource Management concentration within the current Business Administration major.

The current four- or five-year program B.S. Biblical Studies (from MACU) with Associate Degree in Nursing (from COA) is being replaced by an associate degree, A.A. General Studies (Nursing Preparation Track). This is a two-year program taught solely on campus (65 credit hours) that will cover all the prerequisite courses necessary for someone to complete an associate degree RN program at the local community college (and nearly all other such programs at any school). Someone would only have to take the courses specifically in nursing to complete an RN or could continue longer to complete a BSN.

Assistant to the RegistrarWEnDY K. FlorES is the new Administrative Assistant to the Registrar. She is retired and has moved from the west coast to be near

her children and grandchildren who live in the area. She worked 33 years as an admin-istrative assistant with Kaiser Permanente and is an active member at New Community Church in Elizabeth City. Welcome, Wendy.
