The New Year is a time of resolutions, new paths taken, and of choices that can improve your life.

Please take a moment to check out our Winter 2011 brochure for your favorite class. There are over 20 new class offerings to keep things new and exciting! Join your friends, old and new, and resolve to have a new learning opportunity.

We are also in our planning stages for our 12th year of College For Kids Summer Camp at both the Northwest and Andrew Center campuses as well as our Super Science Summer Camp at the Watson Center. Community Education wishes to recognize two extraordinary teachers who have been sharing their knowledge and love for learning with our community for over 25 years

Janos Shoemyen (nom de plume Lawrence Dorr) began

teaching Creative Writing at Santa Fe in 1980. His third story collection “A Slight Momentary

Affliction” was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1987.

Thank you gentlemen for being a part of Community Education at Santa Fe College. You are both exceptional teachers who have enriched the lives of your many students.

George Sternfels has been a wine educator since 1946 and has been teaching wine appreciation classes for Santa Fe Community Education for over 25 years.

BAXTER’S HORSE DRIVING Enjoy the thrilling sport of driving by horse and buggy and exploring quiet,

back roads. This intensive workshop covers basic harness identification, fitting, steps in schooling a horse to drive, lungeing, long lining, hitching and driving. Experience with horses preferred.

BEGINNING OIL PAINTINGLet out the artist in you! Learn color, color theory, materials, and the delight of working with paints. A different topic is covered each week. Janet Porcelli passed away from illness earlier this year. She was an instructor for Community Education for over three years for our Wildlife Art with Pencils course. She had also been with the Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts (GACA) which recognizes the positive relationship among education in the arts, academics, and self-esteem for 15 yrs. She was well loved by her students and will be missed by everyone that knew her.

CERAMICS WITH MAJOLICA GLAZESWe will dig into pliable stoneware clay

to create hand built and wheel thrown ceramics. Learn; pinch, coil and slab techniques. Make functional pottery from scratch. Every student will get time on potter’s wheel. Glaze your pieces with white majolica and paint designs with brightly colored majolica stains. Ware will be fired at studio.

2. Click the Courses link, choose the department and course title you are interested in and select the Enroll Now button. Follow the instructions to enroll and pay for your course. Here you will choose a username and password that will grant you access to the classroom.

3. When your course starts, return to our Online Instruction Center and click the Classroom link. To begin your studies, simply log in with the username and password you selected during enrollment.

SF Community Education Discover Digital Photography Join us and explore the world of digital photography! Discover Digital Photography provides an introduction to the fascinating technology that has catapulted the photographic world into the 21st century. You’ll explore a broad overview of the basics of digital photography, equipment, software, the digital darkroom, printing, using photos on the Internet and with e-mail, along with commercial and personal applications. You’ll learn how to decide what equipment and software is best for your personal digital photography needs, what you can do with digital photography after you’ve taken the pictures, and what you can expect to invest. Whether you’re new to photography or a long-time photographer looking for a complement to traditional photography, this class will provide an introduction to new opportunities for putting digital photography to use. This course serves as an excellent introduction before taking Secrets of Better Photography where we focus our time on camera settings, features, and the mechanics of taking better pictures.

GED Preparation Technological advances in the workplace have made a high school diploma essential for almost all workers. If you want to obtain employment or advance in your career, you will need to demonstrate to you employer that you have at least a high school education. If you never finished high school, the GED exam will serve as proof that you have acquired the equivalent of a high school education on your own. If you are comfortable reading newspapers and you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide without a calculator, you’re halfway there! This course will help you develop the additional reading and thinking skills you’ll need to succeed in all five GED test areas: Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Literature, and Math. After completion of this course, you should be well-equipped to take--and pass--the GED! Seniors - 60+ ClubCommunity Education classes only. Seniors 60 years and older may have their registration fees waived for their classes if: 1) they register the first night the class is held - students who register before the class begins or register online will pay full price for the course; no refunds, no exceptions; 2) space is available in the class, and 3) the class has met the required minimum seats filled. The student must pay all lab fees or additional fees for any course. Please check space availability by calling 352-395-5193 the day before, or day of 1st class. Some classes do not allow Senior Waivers.

• Enrollment in Community Education classes is open to any person regardless of race, creed, color, sex, age, handicap, or marital status. Some classes may not be suitable for children.

General Information

Onsite RegistrationCall 352-395-5193 the day before, or day of 1st class to see if space is available. Classes without sufficient enrollment will be cancelled.

You may drop a class and receive a full refund by calling the Community Education office DURING THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION TERM for any class 2 weeks or longer in length. For classes shorter than two weeks in length, regardless of the week of the term, you must drop the class at least 2 business days before the class begins to receive a refund.

After the first two weeks of the Community Education term, and once a course is in progress, you must fill out a petition for refund. Refunds are not automatic, and a legitimate reason must be stated. After the FIRST THREE WEEKS OF THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION TERM, only partial refunds will be granted upon approval. Full refunds will NOT be granted except in special cases.

Outdoor adventure classes require additional lead drop time. You may drop an outdoor class/trip, but you must petition for a refund. The petition will go before a review committee, and if approved, you will receive a partial refund.*

NO PETITIONS WILL BE RECEIVED OR REFUNDS PROCESSED once the last day of the term has passed. Call 352-395-5193, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., if you wish to drop within the appropriate drop time. You will need to provide the following student information: student ID, name, address, telephone number, and course number(s) of class(es) you wish to drop.

You will receive a refund check in the mail in approximately 4 - 6 weeks. Your credit card account will NOT be credited for the amount.

NOTE: Online classes have varying drop dates for refunds. Check online courses for details.
