Thursday, December 15, 2016 Sheridan, Noblesville, Cicero, Arcadia, Atlanta, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield Vol. 3, No. 247 Mostly sunny and cold today, increasing clouds tonight. A wind chill advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. TODAY’S WEATHER HIGH: 12 LOW: 7 From Jan. 5-7, nearly 200 students from a six-state region will gather at the Noblesville location of Ivy Tech Community College, 300 N. 17th Street, for a regional speech and debate tournament sponsored by The National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA). For this tournament to succeed, over 250 community judges from the surrounding area are needed to sign up as soon as possible to provide real-world feedback to these students who are presenting a wide variety of speeches and two styles of debate. Judges from the community need only be over the age of 18; no experience is needed to judge. “Community judges provide competitors with a fresh perspective,” explained Bridget Rogers, tournament coordinator and leader of REJO!CE Speech & Debate Club of Central Indiana, a local speech and debate club that draws families from several counties to its north side meeting location. “We’re helping students to think critically, articulate winsomely and communicate graciously. For them to develop those skills, we need objective input. That’s where community judges come in.” Whether a student is performing a humorous interpretation, presenting a persuasive speech, or sparring in team policy or Lincoln-Douglas debate, lay judges from the community give debaters and speakers a chance to practice their skills in front of audience members who represent the kinds of people they are most likely to address in their adult lives. But students aren’t the only ones to benefit. “I hear people say how frustrated they are that the next generation doesn’t seem to be stepping up,” Rogers continued. “This is a chance to observe students working hard to develop Community judges needed for regional speech and debate tournament The City of Noblesville is exploring a potential east-west corridor – known as the Pleasant Street expansion and White River bridge. This future project would help alleviate current traffic congestion along Pleasant Street and through Noblesville’s historic downtown, and support Noblesville’s vision for the future and its infrastructure needs. On December 13, 2016, the city hosted a public information session and open conversation about its findings from an east-west corridor study. At the meeting, city officials presented a historical perspective on past studies of a new east- west corridor, the challenges of this project and shared information about the most recent data – including vehicular traffic and budget estimate comparisons for four potential routes. Noblesville officials stated, the information in the study is a necessary step to the potential design and funding of a new corridor – so precise real estate impacts have not yet been determined at this point. Renderings presented on Tuesday indicated a “bypass” of downtown Noblesville that extends southeast from the area of Hague Road and State Road 32, crossing Cicero Creek, River Road and White River near Vine Street then extending southeast between 5 th and 6 th streets to connect with Pleasant Street. The cost of the Pleasant Street project is expected to be nearly $41 million. A total of four options were identified by Noblesville. Option A – Conner Street, Option B – Pleasant Steet, Option C – Irving Street and Option D – Carbon Street. After the city’s presentation, the public was invited to share their feedback in an open, constructive format, and ask questions about the project. While Noblesville Common Council members were in attendance at the meeting, no timetable has been set for any decisions on the potential project. The purpose of the meeting was to inform the public, gather feedback and answer questions. More meetings of this type will be held in the future. The complete presentation can be found on the City of Noblesville’s website www.cityofnoblesville.org . By WHEAT HOTCHKISSCourtesy nbacompacersThe Pacers up-and-down season

continued on Wednesday night Indiana(13-13) fell to the Heat (9-17) in Miami95-89 snapping a two-game win streak ThePacers have yet to win or lose more than twoconsecutive contests all season long

The Pacers struggled to find a rhythmearly on Wednesday connecting on just7-of-23 shots (304 percent) in the firstquarter But Indiana was good enoughdefensively to force the Heat into 10turnovers and got to the free throw line eighttimes in the period which allowed the Blueamp Gold to head into the second quarter witha 21-20 lead

The Heat moved back in front early inthe second period and led for the vastmajority of the period extending the marginto as many as seven points

The Pacers however strung together a9-2 run to tie the game at 45 on MylesTurners layup with 228 left in the halfThey eventually retook the lead on a massive

fast break dunk from Thaddeus Young with21 seconds to play but Tyler Johnsonknocked down a floater on the other end asthe buzzer sounded to push the Heat back infront by one heading into halftime

Indiana struggled to contain Heat centerHassan Whiteside in the first half The7-footer scored 20 points over the first twoquarters on 9-of-12 shooting and alsocollected 14 rebounds six of them offensive

Whiteside basically just dominated thepaint with offensive rebounds and hisscoring and his putbacks Pacers headcoach Nate McMillan said We really justdidnt have an answer for his paint presence

After going just 3-for-11 from the fieldthrough the first two quarters Pacers All-Star forward Paul George heated up shortlyafter halftime PG buried his first four shotsin the third quarter knocking down two3-pointers and converting an old-fashionedthree-point play to help the Blue amp Goldsurge back ahead

Indiana led by as many as seven pointsin the third period and took a narrow 79-78lead heading into the fourth

But the Blue amp Golds offense went coldfor a prolonged stretch allowing the hoststo move back in front The Pacers failed toscore for a 703 stretch spanning the end ofthe third and start of the fourth quarters

Miami managed nine points over thattime opening up a five-point lead beforeAaron Brooks jumper with 609 to playsnapped Indianas scoreless streak

After George scored with 238 to playtrimmed Miamis lead to 92-89 the Pacershad three chances to tie the game ButGeorge missed a deep 3-pointer in transitionon Indianas first possession and MylesTurner missed a three on each of Indianasnext two trips down the court

With the shot clock turned off afterTurners last miss the Pacers fouled theHeat but werent yet in the bonus On theensuing inbound Miami utilized quickpasses to evade Indianas foul attempts andeventually found Josh Richardson for anuncontested dunk that sealed the victory forthe hosts

I thought we played a little slow in thatfourth quarter George said after the loss

I took a couple tough looks One particularthree that I could have avoided I thought wejust played slow which kind of sped us upwhen it got late in the shot clock where wehad to try and make plays

George led the Pacers with 22 points inthe loss but was just 8-for-22 from the fieldCJ Miles added 15 points off the benchgoing 3-for-6 from 3-point range Turneradded 11 points seven rebounds and fiveblocks

Whiteside led all scorers with 26 pointsand 22 rebounds though he converted justone field goal after halftime

He was aided by James and TylerJohnson both of whom gave Miami bigminutes off the bench James Johnsonfinished with 14 points on 6-of-9 shootingand six assists Tyler Johnson added 15points five rebounds three assists and fourblocks

The Pacers return to action on Thursdaynight in New Orleans when they take onAnthony Davis and the Pelicans on thesecond night of a back-to-back
