Current Issues

Parkville is a very diverse school with a wide range of minor issues, but a few that span across all disciplines. Areas of need:

• Student Motivation – Many of our students are removed from the interest of the content, and therefore do not apply themselves to succeed. •College and Career Readiness – Students are not aware of what skills they need to be successful in the careers they are interested in (and often are not aware of the careers themselves). • Attendance – As a school, our attendance rate is still averaging at, or below, the required percentage of student participation. • Self Esteem – Following along with motivation, many of our students are lacking the understanding of their potential, and often lack the support they deserve outside of school.

Current Actions - Content With teaching so many diverse learners, I’ve found that creating websites for each unit profoundly increases the delivery of content as well as the workflow and self-directed learning. Additionally, I create tutorials for very technical concepts that can consist of step-by-step screenshots to full video tutorials. They allow students to review at their own pace, and develop a workflow that best suits their learning style.

Benefits: •Paperless and Organized •Instant and constant review of content (discrete viewing too)

•Limitless resources (images, links, examples, video tutorials, audio,

etc)

•Interactivity, Review, and Inquiry •Easily updated (Ex. Stages of an assignment

meant to be hidden until a later date)

•Available for parents and students outside of the classroom

Current Actions - Content

Unit Website: •Interactive Media Productions 3 •“CEO Project”

Unit Website: •Photo 2 •“Model Mashup”

Technique Tutorial: •Photo Studio •“Dragan Effect”

Unit Website: •Photo Studio •“HDR Photography”

Video Tutorial •Photo 1 •“Building a Pinhole Camera”

Working with Universal Design for Learning in mind, I’ve found that note-taking in Microsoft OneNote can become an interactive collaborative conversation, kept and accessed digitally for all students, all the time.

Benefits: •Paperless (Easily updated and reused)

•Instant and constant review of content (discrete viewing too)

•Student-centered content (Ex. Anecdotes as fast as you can type, per

student, per class)

•Mix of photographic, drawn, and typed content (Students can

actually read my “handwriting”!)

•Always online - available for parents and students outside of the classroom

Examples: •Class notes •Shot Lists

Current Actions - Content

Developing a classroom of rigor, respect, and unity creates an experience that students want to be a part of, and teachers want to work with. It allows students to have a sense of ownership over their work, but also feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes since they know they will ultimately succeed through it all.

Benefits: •Student-centered content with collaboration – Students learn to work with their peers, not against them (real-world projects)

•Students learn to synthesize, reflect, empathize, and criticize (critiques, online, peer

reviews, etc)

•Independence and personal pride and ownership (personally-driven projects,

photographic proposals)

•Confidence in positive risk-taking from peers, teacher, and instruction (personally-

driven projects, photographic proposals)

•Dynamic instruction that can reflect student interaction and the personal learning styles of each individual student •Intrinsic motivation to succeed because we all succeed together

Current Actions - Community

Implementing Edmodo in your classes brings a world of collaboration to your students’ fingertips in a social media environment comfortable enough for them to give real feedback. And content managing sites like Edline offer thorough options for presenting and archiving data.

Benefits: •Student-centered content and collaboration •Apps for iOS and Android (Constant access)

•Link to all media on the Internet (Apps integrate)

•Students upload images for critique (Instant feedback)

•Multiple “groups” and options (Badge achievements, closed conversations, optional public pages)

•Available for parents and students outside of the classroom •Includes tools for classroom use (Quizzes, library, timers, etc)

Current Actions - Community

Being part of the curriculum writing team allows me to really help push content into a current state that pulls students back into the learning process. Over the last 12 years, we’ve added new and cutting edge concepts and techniques, all of which have prepared our students for success after high school.

Benefits: •Student-centered content •New media •Up-to-date with current trends and interests •College readiness •CTE coursework tied to community college so students gain credit for their high school accomplishments •Career training in fields of expertise •Advanced projects offer problem-solving techniques unique to each student

Current Actions - Curriculum

Baltimore County Public Schools Project LiVE Video Game Concept Contest

Current Actions - Curriculum

Student Concept Art (Click to Advance)

Some of the results in my classroom: •Open-ended critiques of student work •Upper level students propose their own artistic problems to solve •CTE students entering community college with courses already complete •100% pass rate for my AP students •Numerous art shows and competitions that help build self esteem and openness to reflection •Almost zero incidents of inappropriate behavior (Only 2 referrals this year)

•Student enrollment continues to grow; Added to magnet program •2 students attending Corcoran College of Art and Design for Photojournalism (Only a few collegiate programs in the US devoted to a BFA in Photojournalism – University of Missouri, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the Corcoran)

•Numerous students following their artistic passion into art schools like MICA or CalArts or to Towson University for Art Education •Students have gone on to work in major fields of photography, graphic design, industrial design, web design, and Art education
