The Community Foundation 2010 Annual Report

A Remarkable Year It is our pleasure to report a set of organizational milestones

that indicate we are better prepared than ever to effect

lasting, positive change in our community and beyond – and

to continue to grow this capacity to serve into the future.

The most immediately visible recent change is the addition of

two new faces to the Foundation workforce:

Ditas Kaag, Finance Officer, is a Certified Public

Accountant with extensive nonprofit foundation

experience.

Lisa Biever, Program Officer, is spearheading

Foundation programs like scholarships, the Women &

Girls Fund and Youth in Philanthropy.

Teri McNally, Executive Director, continues to lead the

Community Foundation forward in its mission to foster

permanent charitable funds and philanthropic programs that

support outstanding community projects.

The results of other Foundation changes will become visible

in the year to come. With a gift of $2.325 million from the

estate of “Duff” McDuff Green, Jr. the Community

Foundation endowment has grown to $6.8 million in assets.

This Green gift will allow us to offer $112,000 in grants to

promising area projects bringing youth, recreation and/or

preservation programming to the region. This is in addition to

our ongoing donor-advised, field of interest and unrestricted grantmaking programs.

To date, the Foundation has delivered over $3 million back to the community. We

are on track to grow to $25 million over the next 5 years – tripling the available

funding we can distribute to critical issues throughout the area.

Additional Foundation highlights for the 2009/10 period include:

• The inaugural award of grants through the Women & Girls Fund: following

a live ballot voting event in May, grants totaling $22,000 were made to area

projects that address needs identified in the Women & Girls Fund Status

Report, which was released in January.

• The development of a new Senior Leaders track for high school seniors

enrolled in the Youth in Philanthropy program. “YIP” awarded five grants in

2009/10 totaling $12,000.

• The award of $35,000 in college scholarships to 28 area high school

students from among a pool of 152 applicants.

• The completion of a new comprehensive organizational strategic plan.

A community foundation is a vehicle for people of all means to make a lasting

difference in the community causes they care about. Our central purpose is to serve

the needs and philanthropic aims of donors who wish to better their community,

now and in the future. We do this by providing donors with flexible, efficient, and

tax-effective ways to ensure their charitable giving achieves the greatest possible

impact. Because our region’s civic leaders choose the Community Foundation as the

most effective way to actively champion the causes they care about, we are actively

growing a vital set of resources that will benefit the Rappahannock River region in

perpetuity. It would be our pleasure to help you reach your own charitable goals -

here where you live, and beyond. As our partner in giving, you can rely on the

simplicity and tax advantages of a public charity combined with the personal

recognition, involvement and flexibility of a private foundation. Please contact

Executive Director, Teri McNally to set up an informal meeting where you can

learn more about how we can support your philanthropic goals, by e-mail at

[email protected] or by phone at 540 373-9292.
