Over the past year, we’ve supported philanthropic partnerships, provided charitable grants and encouraged endowments - all of which have contributed to the vitality of our great city. Many generous people, charities and corporations call Burlington home and, as your community foundation, we’ve built a centre for philanthropy that is sustaining our city’s vitality.

Throughout our 2012 - 2013 fiscal year, we discovered the most pressing needs in our community, responded to these needs through our grantmaking activities and, with the support of our fundholders, volunteers as well as local charities, charted a course for the future. We welcomed seven new funds and celebrated accomplishments including:

• Publishingourfirst-everVitalSigns® 2012 report - a transparent, reliable and unbiased assessment of community needs that uncovered some hidden and pressing concerns in our community and shaped our 2012-2013 grant application focus, process and guidelines.

• Increasingoureffortstoengageandretainmorelife-longsupporters-wewelcomed18volunteers, formalized our program standards and shared some of our keenest supporters’ stories on our website.

Removing financial barriers for talented young people to participate in visual arts and fine crafts programming is at the heart of the BaC’s scholarship program for youth. Charitable agencies and teachers first identify eligible students and then work with parents or guardians to get youths registered. Once accepted to visual arts classes, no one in the class, including the instructor, is aware that the student is a scholarship recipient.

TheYMCAofHamilton/Burlington/Brantford’sRonEdwardsFamilyYwasselected as the fund’s first grant recipient in February 2013.

This specialized program focuses on music and provides a flexible drop-in format for local youth. The opportunities to jam with a variety of musicians are limitless. as well, the Underground program has a business element, helping young participants discover ways to record and market their musical projects. Combining an outlet for musical creativity while also nurturing skills that could lead to a musical career, this program is helping Burlington youth and building on the pieczonka family’s performing arts legacy.
