“The children had so much fun reading
books, playing games, colouring and just
spending time with their families! It was so
nice to see that,” explains Nicole. “All the
students even got to go home with a free
book!”
Big thanks to everyone that helped put it
on, including caterer, Janice Crowe.
Family Literacy Night
On October 29th, Chief Payepot School
held their monthly Family Literacy Night.
The event was held from 4:30-6pm and
included a book giveaway, games night
and a free “Taco in a bag.” The event
attracted over 140 guests and was a huge
success.
“Children introduced to reading early on
tend to read earlier and excel in school
compared to children who are not exposed
to language and books at a young age,”
explains Chief Payepot School Principal,
Nicole Crowe.
Did you Know?
Parent involvement is the number one
predictor of early literacy success.

taking the win in their last game. We hope you enjoy the Toronto trip!
Boxing Classes Keeping Youth
Active
Every Tuesday and Thursdays,
boxing lessons are offered to youth at
Chief Payepot School gym.
Wesley Sunshine, a certified boxing
coach provides the lessons to youth
ages 9 years and up. The lessons are
courtesy of the partnership between
QBOW and Piapot First Nation.
“Classes average around 30 kids per
class and it seems to be a really
popular activity for them,” explains
Ranae Fourhorns, QBOW Prevention
Worker. “We hope by offering
activities like this we can keep our
youth active and out of trouble.”
For any inquiries, contact Wesley at:
Teaching Cree to our Little Ones
Every Wednesday, Cree Instructor,
Kokum Margaret (Rockthunder) visits
the Daycare & HeadStart to provide
interactive Cree lessons to the children.
“Young children are better at learning a
language than older children and adults.
To speak a language at a fluency level,
it is important to start as early as
possible,” explains Jackie Francis,
Director of Daycare & HeadStart. “The
children learn Cree in different ways at
the center, including
using flashcards, listening/singing
songs in Cree, playing games etc.”
“It’s more important than ever now to
ensure that our young people are
exposed to their Cree language,”
explains Margaret. “Language is the
foundation of a culture and that
language holds stories, songs, dances,
family histories and connections. When
a language dies so does the link to the
cultural and historical past.”

Indian Day School Information Session
On Nov. 14th, our External Relations team, Kristin Francis, and
Allery Carrier, held an Indian Day School Info Session at the
school. Over 180 people attended and received important info
regarding the settlement.
Highlights include:
- Recent court challenge could delay the implementation date -
which was expected to begin mid-December.
- Former Payepot students can sign consent release form at Band
Office to allow Piapot to retrieve school records from National
Archive on their behalf. For any school record inquiries,
contact Allery Carrier at [email protected]
- Survivors are invited to register online to receive updates related
to the Indian Day School Class Action at:
https://ca.gowlingwlg.com/dayschoolclassaction/
Note - Registering does not apply you for compensation. The
claim process will be sent to you as it comes available.

Ensuring that everyone has
access to safe clean water is a top
priority for our community.
The construction of the new
biological water treatment plant
is currently underway and is set to
be completed November 2020.
Biological treatment is used
worldwide because it’s effective
and more economical than many
other mechanical or chemical
processes. Our Water Treatment
New Water Treatment Plant Development on Track
Plant Operators, Marnie Francis
and Rowena Fourhorns are
required to have advanced training
to operate this type of plant.
“We are excited to be able to
provide a new and safer method to
provide clean water for our
community,” explains Marnie.
“The contractors are doing a great
job and are making good
progress!”
New Youth Centre Construction Underway
On November 5th, over 100 youth
gathered at the Chief Payepot gym
to learn more about the upcoming
youth centre and to participate in
an engagement session hosted by
our External Relations team;
Allery and Kristin, and Youth
Centre Project Manager, Darlynn.
The goal of the session was to
gather feedback on the youth’s
community development priorities
and to gather insight on the types
of activities that the youth would
like to see offered at the new youth
centre.
Construction for the new youth
center is currently underway.
The center will be located just
east of the school and is expected
to be completed by early summer.
Darlynn Lavallee, Youth Centre
Project Manager, says the youth
centre will be a welcoming place
for youth to meet and socialize as
well as participate in variety of
programming that will provide
them with the necessary tools to
develop practical skills and
leadership qualities while
improving the community.
“Piapot is dedicated to helping
our youth achieve their full
potential and by providing this
space we hope we can achieve
that,” explains, Chief Jeremy
Fourhorns. “Our youth remain
our top priority, by investing in
them now we are assisting in their
future success.”
