Agenda
Community Days and Employee Giving Campaign
• Every year, 1.6M Americans are diagnosed with cancer
• 22% of individuals with cancer, including patients with medical insurance, report using up all of their savings as a result of the financial burden of treatment
• 11% of individuals with cancer report the inability to pay for food/necessities while paying for cancer treatment
The Need
• Founded in October, 2012 with seed funding from the McKesson Foundation
• Provides cancer patients throughout the country with the comfort items they need while going through chemotherapy
• Employees are encouraged to volunteer for Giving Comfort during Community Days and are given the option to donate/fundraise during the Employee Giving Campaign each fall and at other events throughout the year
• 100% of individual donor dollars go directly to patient Comfort Kits – not overhead
• The Foundation matches employee donations dollar-for-dollar! Apply at www.mckessonfoundation.com.
Giving Comfort Background
• Delivers free cancer care packages, known as “Comfort Kits,” to low-income cancer patients via Distribution Network Partners – hospitals, cancer care centers and oncologists.
• Comfort Kits can also be purchased online and sent directly to friends and loved ones.
What Does Giving Comfort Do?
What’s in a Kit?
• Items vetted and voted upon by 1,000 patients, survivors, nurses and oncologists.
• High-quality, non-medical items that meet safety and regulatory requirements.
• Items were selected to soothe discomfort caused by chemotherapy treatment and to show patients that people care about them.
What’s in a Kit?
• Each Comfort Kit contains handmade items and handwritten notes from volunteers.
• These items help patients feel that they are not alone in their struggle.
Volunteers Add a Personal Touch
• 60+ Distribution Network Partners (DNPs) representing 165+ patient care facilities throughout the U.S.
