“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 A Word from Pastor Mark Dear Friends, It’s said that “confession is good for the soul”, but that’s not nearly the most powerful benefit. Confession is what brings complete forgiveness, the canceling out of our sin, and the healing that not only we seek, but that all around us is so desperately needed. Scripture is very clear: Confession brings about real change, in heart, soul, life and the world around us. On Sunday, June 24 th , we will have a service of Confession and Repentance in place of our regular worship hour – why? Primarily because we have not been faithful in keeping Christ’s Great Commission in Mahew 28:19 “Go and make disciples of all naons, bapzing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” We have not, as a whole, made disciple making a priority for us. We have forsaken a central part of the church’s calling. We have been good at keeping the Great Commandment: “Love God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”. And “love your neighbor as yourself”. (Ma. 22:37-39), but that’s not the whole of who we are to be as Christ’s disciples. We are called to be not only disciples who are loving but who make other disciples. That Sunday, the 24 th , promises to be a beauful Sunday, full of prayer and refreshment as we come clean before our Heavenly Father and he forgives us. We’ll go through the neighborhood aſterwards, we’ll meet for a meal and share communion together. In short, what we will experience will be healing, as well as transforming. I hope that you will join us and make that Sunday, in parcular, a priority. Together, we’ll find God hearing us, forgiving us, cleansing us, and healing us. A Word from Pastor Mark

Dear Friends, It’s said that “confession is good for the soul”, but that’s not nearly the most powerful benefit. Confession is what brings complete forgiveness, the canceling out of our sin, and the healing that not only we seek, but that all around us is so desperately needed. Scripture is very clear: Confession brings about real change, in heart, soul, life and the world around us. On Sunday, June 24th, we will have a service of Confession and Repentance in place of our regular worship hour – why? Primarily because we have not been faithful in keeping Christ’s Great Commission in Matthew 28:19 “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” We have not, as a whole, made disciple making a priority for us. We have forsaken a central part of the church’s calling. We have been good at keeping the Great Commandment: “Love God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”. And “love your neighbor as yourself”. (Matt. 22:37-39), but that’s not the whole of who we are to be as Christ’s disciples. We are called to be not only disciples who are loving but who make other disciples. That Sunday, the 24th, promises to be a beautiful Sunday, full of prayer and refreshment as we come clean before our Heavenly Father and he forgives us. We’ll go through the neighborhood afterwards, we’ll meet for a meal and share communion together. In short, what we will experience will be healing, as well as transforming. I hope that you will join us and make that Sunday, in particular, a priority. Together, we’ll find God hearing us, forgiving us, cleansing us, and healing us. With you for the healing,

Pastor Mark

Getting to Know your Deacons & Elders

This year, we will be featuring

one Deacon and one Elder

each month. We hope you’ll

take a few moments to get to

know these leaders who are

currently serving CPC in

various roles through ministry.

And we ask that you would

pray for them as the seek the

Lord to lead and guide their

way through 2018 and beyond.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself: ED: I was born, raised, graduated from high school (Reese High) and college (Michigan Tech) in Michigan, and was working for General Motors when I enlisted in the Air Force in November 1968. After completing Officer Training School in Texas and Undergraduate and Advanced (C-141) Pilot Training in Oklahoma, I reported to Travis AFB in June 1970. I met and married Judy in 1972. I finished my military career as an Aircraft Commander in February 1974. I went back to graduate school and got my Masters Degree in Engineering from UC Berkeley in 1976 and worked as a Materials/Welding/ Environmental/Design Engineer in the Bay Area until July 2013. We have two children and two grandchildren who have all attended PEP School here at CPC. Tim is a tax attorney in Los Angeles (but lives in Simi Valley) and Becky is now a school psychologist at Jepson here in town. Becky and Rudy and our grand children live in Sacramento but the kids attend Orchard (Trino is finishing the 5th grade, while Louise is a kindergartener). We still help with our grand children on a daily basis. LYNNE: I grew up in New Jersey. I received my teaching credential in Marketing at Rider College. My college roommate moved to San Francisco and invited me to come out for a visit. I fell in love with the City and California and never moved back. I entered the Master’s program at San Jose State University while teaching at Fairfield High School. I retired from teaching Marketing & Business after 30 ½ years and I still work my Mary Kay business. I met my husband, Dan, at the San Francisco Airport bus stop. We were married 7 months later and that was 37 years ago. We have one son, Danny, and 2 daughters and 3 granddaughters who live on the East Coast. We have a cat, Tux and a horse, Sedona. Riding has always been my passion and fortunately, Dan has his golf passion.

Q: What is your “job” on the Deacon or Elder board? ED: This is my second tour as a Deacon. My current Deacon assignment is as Treasurer, while I backup Thomas Burkhart as the Usher and Communion Server Coordinator. I had served in that position during my first Deacon tour. LYNNE: My job with Session is the MDO ministry. I work with a wonderful group of women. We oversee the operations of the program through fundraisers and other activities. I feel blessed to be working with such a worthwhile and rewarding ministry.

Q: What was your first job? ED: My first paying “job” was helping my Dad in his second daily job. He helped a local car mechanic work the family farm he had inherited when his father passed away. I mowed the lawns, helped reload the planter with seed and fertilizer, and hoed the fields on the farm while Dad drove the tractor. Later, I plowed and worked the ground, but was never steady enough to drive the planter straight down the field. I argued that my crooked rows were longer, so they produced more crops per field. But Dad pointed out that it took him longer to cultivate my crooked rows because he had to go slower to avoid taking out all the “good” plants. LYNNE: My first job was working in my Dad’s pharmacy. I ran the register and assisted the customers.

Getting to Know your Deacons & Elders CONTiNUED

Q: Who would you want to sit next to on a 10 hour flight? ED: I would like to sit next to the pilot (i.e., in the co-pilot’s seat) on a long flight. It would be great sport to get back in the cockpit again and see all the advances that have been made. I wonder if he or she would let me make the landing again!! LYNNE: Mary Kay Ash would be my choice to sit beside for a 10 hour flight. She is such an inspiration to women around the world. She gave, and her company is still giving, women an opportunity to better themselves. Mary Kay believed that if your priorities were God, family and Career you would have a blessed and happy life.

Q: If you could go back in time, when and where would you go? ED: If I could go back in time, I would revisit my grade and high school years. My best friend had a very hard time learning, and eventually was held back a year in junior high. I should have, I certainly could have, spent more time helping him. Even though he was a very good, and popular, athlete, in school, hopefully his later life would not have been so difficult. LYNNE: If I could go back in time I would go to the Holy Land during Jesus time.

Q: Can you tell us how you came to know Christ? ED: I was raised in a small Methodist Church and was active in the teen group (MYF). I also attended a weeklong camp (Lake Louise) during the summer for many years. Our minister during this time was Calvin Rice and our Lay Leader was Marion Barcalow. They invested a lot of time and energy helping us understand what being a Christian really meant. I participated in an Inter-racial youth weekend in Detroit in 1963 and stayed with a black family for two nights and had a great time and learned a lot of what the common black people were having to deal with in the big city. When I came back and reported on the things I had experienced, the reaction of several of our church members really shocked me. That summer at Lake Louise, when the call for Christian Commitment came at the evening campfire, I joined several other campers in making my commitment publicly. LYNNE: I grew up in a church family. I sang in the choir and attended Sunday school and youth group. I was in 8 th grade when I was baptized and I can still remember how strong my belief was in accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

Q: Anything else you’d like to share with us? LYNNE: I feel blessed with my wonderful church family at CPC. Through their encouragement and support, I became involved in End 68 Hours of Hunger. Recently, I have started a group for disabled adults called SODA (Social Opportunities for Disabled Adults).

“I REMAIN CONFIDENT OF THIS: I WILL SEE THE GOODNESS OF THE LORD IN THE LAND OF THE LIVING.” PSALM 27:13

Greetings! Summertime is almost here and with it comes all sorts of fun including BBQs, water games, movie nights, snowballs, summer camps, mission trips, ice cream cones, vacations, baseball games, pool parties, camping trips, family reunions, and for better or for worse, hot dogs…lots and lots of hot dogs. Summer break is indeed a time for rest, relaxation, and family fun but summer also presents abundant opportunities to do God’s work…to pursue His mission…to make new disciples for Jesus Christ. Isn’t it amazing that our God is powerful enough to work miracles through the simple act of sharing conversation, eating a hotdog, and enjoying a summer evening with our neighbors? Are you confident that God can work through you in amazing ways? In that we are all ambassadors for Christ, I encourage us to step out in faith and show up in places where God can work through us in ways that we might have thought impossible. Confidence is living like we believe what God says is true. God is stronger than anyone and He can do things that would be impossible for you or me. He has proved this throughout history, but nowhere is this more evident than in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Because of what Jesus has done, we can have confidence. And when you put your faith in Jesus, you can live fully alive. This confidence in Christ is what we will be focusing on throughout the month of June in our combined

SPARK/IGNITE children’s program. Take a look at the bottom line for each week…

This summer, let’s not just teach our kids these lessons in the safety and comfort of our classrooms but let’s show them how to live out these principles by showing up and letting God use us no matter what….and if that means hanging out at a BBQ and eating hotdogs so that you might get a chance to talk with someone who doesn’t know Christ…then so be it and thank God for the opportunity…and the hotdog!

Love and prayers,

Brendan Kavanagh

Presbyterian Enrichment Preschool

PEP School closed the 2017-2018 school year with a celebration of songs held in our Church Sanctuary. Families then enjoyed refreshments on our playground.

Ice Cream Social/Basket Raffle Report: We had a great time creating yummy sundaes with Baskin-Robbins ice cream and the many toppings donated by our preschool families. Several baskets of various themes were donated and raffled at our event. Our fundraiser was a success and we thank all of you who supported this event and the other fundraisers throughout the year.

Summer Fun at PEP: PEP School will be in session Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays, June 5 - 28 and July 3 - 26 from 9:00-11:30 a.m. with many outdoor activities and science projects planned. We still have a few openings in both June and July sessions. Please contact the PEP School office at 448-1626 for enrollment information.

Thank you so much for your continued prayers and support of PEP School!

The Good Samaritan Ministry has seen a jump in requests for food as of late and so they have a few items needed to restock their shelves:

Peanut butter, jelly, canned fruit and applesauce, canned soup, spaghetti sauce and pasta, cereal and jello.

Please bring your donations to the church office or leave it in the basket in the narthex. ALL donations are greatly appreciated!
