What is S.M.A.C.K.?

SMACK is the Community and Service programme of Campus des Nations. It stands for Service Makes All Communities Kinder.

SMACK takes place in and outside of the classroom and promotes:

Awareness: Community and Service is the part of your education that helps you become aware of other people’s culture, challenges or needs.

A new role: You will acquire new skills in your activities; you might learn how to look after younger children, operate a machine or work with people you did not know before. It is the exciting part of Community and Service.

Experiential learning: You learn through personal involvement and human contact.

Values: Community and Service is an active way of developing the IB learner profile values and personal qualities.

Commitment: It is your responsibility not to let anyone down after committing yourself.

Reflection: Before starting a project, you need to set goals with your supervisor and after the project is completed, you will have to look back and assess what you learned.

Growth: Through making a difference, you will become more independent and hopefully even more curious!

Modesty: Community and Service is not about feeling superior for delivering charity to the needy. It is important to remain focused of the fact that you are there to learn.

Fun: It is wise to choose activities that you can be passionate about then there is potential for loads of fun!

REQUIREMENTS:Students are required to complete:

One long term activity throughout the year (or one per semester)

2 short term activities Participation in International class projects An organised portfolio with visual evidence of

activities, reflections and comments from supervisors..

SMACK is conducted through activities that you perform to help others or to raise awareness. The programme’s morphology promotes a gradual development of organisational skills and commitment to global citizenship. The SMACK programme of Campus des Nations has three components:

Short term projects: activities taking place in or outside of school, focusing on one main event (helping organise a Kermesse, Performing in a Christmas concert, organising a bake sale, etc…).Done throughout the yearLong term projects: activities taking place in or outside of school and relying on longevity and commitment for success.

International class projects: each year-group is assigned an international project to work on. This might or might not lead to a trip to the countries. Each student needs to be involved in raising awareness and fundraising for the organisations his/her class works with. The International class projects will be launched in Reflection for year 7, 8 and 9 and during year-level assemblies for years 10 and 11. Each international programme is led by a Campus des Nations teacher.

SMACK in the classroom

Community and service is an Area of Interaction. Some of your class projects can give you SMACK credits if through them, you help others or promote awareness of local or global issues. You can choose to use one class project to count as a short term SMACK activity.

International Class Projects 2011-2012

What are we talking about?

The International Class Projects are an original component of our Community and Service or SMACK programme at Campus des Nations. They allow students to explore a country and to discover a charity working in that country. The pedagogical aim of this is to develop our interest in global issues and nurture intercultural awareness. In the spirit of Community and Service, International class projects allow us to plan and work together as a year group. After being introduced to our country and NGO, we are asked to plan for an action day. It is a team building exercise for years 7 to 10

Students are encouraged to be creative and daring. They usually discover how much further they can go if they unite their efforts.

At the end of the school year, during the SMACK presentations, all MYP students will be asked to reflect on their participation in and contribution to their International Class Project. Thanks to the fact that these projects are entirely student led, with the support of adult supervisors and reflection teachers, the whole school often benefits from colourful and original initiatives planned by the pupils themselves.

POOL OF IDEAS for year 7s

What can I do from home?

A few tips for students in year 7: You can get S.M.A.C.K credits through work done from home. Your activity needs to be helpful and reasonably challenging and stimulating. You cannot count everyday tasks that you would perform anyway as S.M.A.CK. Here are a few examples of interesting short or long-term projects:

Possible Activities Potential supervisors Walking a neighbour’s dog or

dog sitting daily or weekly Reading to an old person or a

small child regularly looking after a patch of

vegetables or part of a garden Building a shelter for birds Teaching a friend how to play

an instrument -Making an intricate work of art

and donating it Used toy or garage sale Making artistic photo-albums

for friends or family. Re-organising the family photos

or library Promoting environmental

awareness or recycling in your neighbourhood

Helping clean or decorate your church or your sports club

Voluntary participation in a talent show, a concert, a fundraising event in your neighbourhood

Compiling a beautiful book of international recipes as a present

Parents, neighbours, community members, sports’ coaches, etc…

YEAR 10: THE INTERNATIONAL AWARD ADVENTURE

What is the International Award?

The Award concept is one of individual challenge. It is a balanced, non-competitive programme of voluntary activities which encourages personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility to themselves and service to their community. Participants set themselves challenging personal goals in four different Sections.

How will it happen at Campus des Nations?

We will start with the Award in Year 10 as part of the Outdoor Education Program and SMACK, at the Bronze level.

There are four mandatory Sections: Service (SMACK ) Adventurous Journey (Outdoor education) Skills (World of work and International Class project) Physical Recreation (extra-curricular sports)

YEAR 11: THE ECOLINT-RED CROSS COMMUNITY AND SERVICE CERTIFICATE

In year 11, the SMACK requirements remain the same but students work in priority with the Geneva Red Cross. In order to obtain the Ecolint-Red-Cross community and Service certificate, students will complete one long term activity and at least one of the two short term ones with the Geneva red-Cross.

LETTER FOR SUPERVISORS

Dear sir/Madam,

Thank you for your time and energy. Through your activity, you will be helping an Ecolint student complete his/her S.M.A.C.K. programme.

S.M.A.C.K. is the community and service component of Campus des

Nations’ curriculum. It stands for ‘Service Makes All Communities kinder’. Through this programme, students are encouraged to reflect on how they can contribute to the different communities they belong to. The values that underline Community and Service in our school are contained in the IB learner profile that you can consult on the following site:

http://www.ibo.org/programmes/documents/learner_profile_en.pdf

In the context of SMACK, a supervisor’s role is:

To establish clear and stimulating goals with the student(s) before starting an activity (through a SMACK proposal form brought by the student)

To help the student(s) fulfill these goals To give them oral and/or written feedback

LETTRE POUR LES SUPERVISEURS D’ACTIVITES

Madame, Monsieur,

Voir :

http://www.ibo.org/programmes/documents/learner_profile_en.pdf

Cordialement,
