UPES wins Technology Leadership Award

The 11th edition of SAP ACE Awards 2018 was held in Mumbai to recognize and celebrate some of the best accomplishments of digital innovation from across India.

UPES received one of the most coveted awards in the industry for one of the projects nominated under the category of “Running a Live, Real-time Enterprise. ”

Emerging as the winner of SAP ACE Awards 2018 for this category testaments our forward thinking approach and being one of the best run businesses in India.

Over 300 nominations for projects across 16 award categories were seen this year, focusing separately on large and midsize companies. The nominations were put through a stringent evaluation process to select the final winners in each category.

The award was received by Dr. Ashish Bhardwaj, CIO, UPES at a glittering ceremony held in Mumbai on 20th April 2018.

Awarded‘Best University with Placements and Employability Award’

Strategic Collaboration with BSE

With an objective to establish a road map for a successful execution and rollout of industry modules in all MBA programs, UPES inked a strategic MoU with BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) Institute Limited on 11th April 2018.

The MoU is signed for the courses under School of Business, Department of Accounting and Finance to facilitate incorporation of industry aligned modules in Finance & Accounting and Corporate Finance. The aim is to provide relevant education and knowledge to students pursuing education in management.

This collaboration covers two compulsory modules in the areas of Finance & Accounting and Corporate Finance which would be incorporated in the curriculum as a credit module in Finance & Accounting across all MBA programs. Besides, BSE experts would teach and provide software for mock trading to students.

ET Now features UPES India’s Finest Educators

UPES was featured as ‘India’s Finest Educators’ in an half special episode on leading English news channel ET Now (by Times of India group).

Though we all know and are proud of being in that league but to be featured on a news channel was a different feeling all together.

The episode was telecasted on ET Now on 14th April at with a repeat broadcast on the penultimate day.

Proud Winners of Rs. 1 Lakh

A group of engineering students from UPES won a cash prizes worth Rs.1,00,000, at National level competition “NAVADHARA- 2k18.”

The competition was held at Dev Bhoomi Group of Institutions in association with UCOST on 16th to 17th

April 2018.

More than 20 students in 6 categories participated through projects namely Smart Emergency Response, Mind controlled robotic arm, Tirth yatra surakshaChakar (TYSC), IoT based Intelligent motes for environment monitoring, T-point monitoring system and Hydro care.

Students won awards in categories like Best Innovation, Best Futuristic Model and so on.

Prestigious L. Austin Grant Earn

Two of our students, Arun Ravi of B. Tech geoscience and Ashutosh Kumar from B. Tech APE upstream course, earned a prestigious L. Austin Grant from the AAPG Foundation $ 500/- each.

The AAPG Foundation's L. Austin Weeks (LAW) Undergraduate Grant program annually awards deserving undergraduate geoscience students and student-led geoscience associations (student chapters, associations and clubs) with grants to geoscience students and student associations annually.

These grants are intended to support the educational endeavors of undergraduate geoscience students and their student-led organizations.

AAPG stands for American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation and UPES has a student chapter of this association which is proactively working in this front.

Students selected for Prestigious ProgramsTwo of our B. Tech Aerospace Engineering final year students namely Shreshth Kanugo and Akash Patel got selected for Master’s Program in one of the prestigious Space program funded by Erasmus Mundus also known as Space Master Course.

It is a joint Masters program in Space Science and Technology 2018-20. These students are among the only 20 students selected throughout the world for this program. The 1st year of this course would be completed in Lulea University of Technology.

Both these students would go to Cranfield University for their academic semester which is the pioneer for aerospace engineering in the world.

Consortium of Universities responsible for the SpaceMaster Course includes prestigious institutions in Sweden, UK, Japan and France.

Taavishe Gupta, a 3rd year student of B. Tech Aerospace Engineering has been selected to participate in the Visiting Students’ Research program to be held during May 7 to July 4, 2018 at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai in the Department Of Astronomy & Astrophysics.

She will primarily work on a research project in the Department Of Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Eklavya Award for Outstanding PerformanceA team of two B. Tech Power system Engineering students, TanishkaAgarwal & Ayush Goyal calling themselves as team ‘Pryolyzers’ secured 1st prize and received “Eklavya Award” for their outstanding performance in project prototype competition.

The competition was organised under ‘Swatchh Bharat’ theme of ‘Navarachanaa 2018’ National Project Competition that held at Indore on 6th - 7th April 2018.

This team won 1st prize in the competition with a cash award of Rs. 51,000/- competing against 35 teams after few rounds.

Along with this, their mentor Dr. G. Praveen Kumar, Asst. Prof has been also awarded with Best Mentor “Dronacharya Award.”

Alumni Returns as an Expert

Nothing can satisfy more than to see an alumni returning back to the campus as an industry expert on the subject he studied at his college. The feeling was same when Dr. Divyanshu, alumnus of B. Tech in Automotive Design Engineering, 2006-2010 batch visited campus and delivered insightful workshop as an expert on the subject.

As an initiative to build industry, academia relationship and to bridge the gap between them, UPES organized a two-day workshop on Vehicle Dynamics Development (OEM's Perspective) on 10th and 11th April, 2018.

Dr. Joshi is working as the Lead Engineer in Vehicle Dynamics Research, Advanced Technology Mahindra Research Valley at Chennai and holds a doctorate in Vehicle Dynamics and Control from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Electra Encourages Technical Ideas

Electra 2.0 is an annual fest of IEEE student branch and this year the fest was organized on 6th to 8th April 2018 with an aim to provide students platform to showcase their innovative scientific and technical ideas in front of renowned technologists.

With a total of 16 technical/non-technical events, 3 technical workshops and a environmental consciousness activity was organized focusing on technical expertise & fun and frolic events as well.

Mr. Amit Sinha, IG Police, TELE & Director ITDA was invited as the Chief Guest at the inauguration of the Tech Fest. Over 450 students participated with full zeal and enthusiasm in various events.

Besides technical sessions, an environmental consciousness activity ‘Parivesh’ was conducted that witnessed placing of 150 clay pots around the campus to provide a favorable surrounding for the bird throughout the campus.

Knowledge Shared

The IEEE Special Interest Group onHumanitarian Technology (SIGHT) program isa global network of groups of volunteersconsisting of IEEE members and othervolunteers who identify and address localproblems by applying their technical skills andpartnering with their local communities.

UPES holds a Student Chapter of IEEE Computer Society that organized “IEEE SightActivity on Humanitarian Technology” on 20th April 2018.

The Chief Guest for the event was Prof. Dilip Kumar Sharma, Vice Chairman ofIEEE Computer Society, IEEE UP Section. Mr. Pravin Dagdee, Industry fellow, UPESDehradun and Dr. Dilip Kumar Sharma were the Keynote speakers.

Aeroclub, UPES organized a knowledge synchronizing workshop on hovercrafts to motivate students in developing practical skills in model development and fabrications. The lecture session focused on demonstration of components along with model fabrications.

Renaissance‘Renaissance’ is the 1st National Space Convention of UPES that concluded its 3 day long technical symposium successfully.

The convention was jointly organized by ‘Infinity Space Club’ of the Astronotical Society of UPES Students in collaboration with ‘Uttarakhand Science Education & Research Centre (USERC)’ & the ‘Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) having its headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

The convention aimed at promoting awareness about the Cosmos amongst the young minds. Renowned scholar Dr. Durgesh Pant, Director, USERC inaugurated the event as the Chief Guest.

Dr. Manvendra Singh, Scientist - IRDE, DRDO Dehradun; Dr. Shefali Agarwal, Head - Remote Sensing Department, IIRS, Dehradun and Dr. Abhai Mishra, Scientist - DEAL, DRDO were among key speakers. The event saw a participation of over 600 students through 300 teams.

‘International Conference on Management of Infrastructure

International Conference on Management of Infrastructure was organized jointly by the ‘School of Business (SOB)’ UPES and ‘Strömstad Acadmey’ Sweden. The conference was sponsored by the ‘State Infrastructure & Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. (SIDCUL)’ a Government of Uttarakhand Enterprise incorporated to promote Industrial development in the State.

The first amongst the key speakers, Dr. Lars Broman, Vice Chancellor, Strömstad Akademi, Sweden & co-host of the conference elaborated on ‘The Swedish Way of Adopting Science & Technology in Public Policy, Planning and Implementation for Sustainable Development’. Mr. Ravi Teja Bommireddipalli - CEO RobosoftTechnologies, Udupi, Dr. Tara Chandra Kandpal - Professor, IIT Delhi, Mr. Tanay Kediyal - Country Head, Wells Fargo India and Prof. Samo Bobek from University of Maribor, Slovenia.

Conclave to Set the Research Spirit

Two day Research Conclave on “Business, Economics and Social Sciences” held on 22nd and 23rd March, 2018. Jointly conducted by SCMS Cochin School of Business Cochin, Kerala and School of Business, UPES. The Major focus of the Research Conclave was to cover broad topics around research, literature review, gaps, formulation of objectives, design, Blue print, etc.

The program was jointly coordinated by Dr. C. Sengottuvelu(SCMS Cochin) and Mr Akhil Damodaran (SOB, UPES).

The dais was shared by Dr. Tarun Dhingra, School of Business, UPES along with eminent resource persons from academia across India namely Dr. S Sunita (NIT Calicat) , Dr. R sridharan (NIT Calicat).

The occasion also concluded with signing of an MoU between UPES and SCMS School of Business Cochin.

Panel Discussion on IP Law and Policy

UPES-UCOST-IPR Cell, Dehradun organized a panel discussion on “Role of IP Law and Policy in India’s Economic Development: Challenges and Prospects” on April 26 to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day.

The panel comprises of prominent personalities in the field of IPR including Dr. Rajendra Dobhal, Director General, UCOST, Prof. Dinesh Abrol, Professor, Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISID), Delhi, Prof. (Dr.) Zafar M. Nomani, Professor of Law-Aligarh Muslim University, Dr. Raman Mittal, Associate Professor of Law, University of Delhi and Prof. (Dr.) Tabrez Ahmad, Professor & Director, UPES School of Law (Moderator).

Deliberations were delivered around various aspects relating to intellectual property and address specific issues as to how far economic development of the country is linked with the level of intellectual property rights (IPR) protection, and where does India stand from this viewpoint.

Paras Diwan Memorial International Moot Competition8th edition of “Dr. Paras Diwan Memorial ‘Energy Laws’ International Moot Court Competition” concluded on 8th April, 2018. This annually held competition saw a participation of 26 reputed Law Universities: 25 from 15 states of India & 1 from Bangladesh.

UPES has been organizing this annual competition since 2011 in the memory of Dr Paras Diwan: an eminent jurist & legal luminary known for his immense lifetime contributions in the field of law.

The moot court theme for this year was based on ‘Oil exploration & Underwater Cultural Heritage’.

Former Governor of Chhattisgarh & Retd. IAS, Mr. Shekhar Dutt inaugurated the event as the Chief Guest.Other luminaries gracing this 3 day event as the ‘Guests of Honor’ included Padma Shree Dr. Avdhash Kaushal, Founder - RLEK; Dr. Parag Diwan, Founding VC, UPES; Dr. R.B.S. Rawat, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Uttarakhand; Dr. Sushmita Dutt, Former UNICEF Officer and Dr. A.C. Kher, Retd. IAS. The Chief Guest for the Valedictory Session, Hon’ble Justice (Retd.) Woodless Pencil to generate Income

Under DST sponsored project, “UPES - Women Technological Park,” (WTP) is on the path of women’s empowerment giving them opportunity to be financially independent.

Under the flagship of UPES WTP, environmental friendly ‘’Woodless Pencils” were made. These pencils were made up of waste newspaper by the rural women of nearby villages of UPES.

The income generated from the selling of these pencils went to the women, which provided them the sense of security, motivation and enthusiasm to work.

Record Breaking Blood Donation

The ability to donate and save a life is possible only in human beings. UPES shared this invaluable gift for someone in need.

In association with Blood Bank of Indian Medical Association and Shri Mahant Inderesh Hospital Trust, UPES organised the annual Blood Donation Camp across the campuses.

It was an overwhelming response as total donations in five days were 1858 and 658 deferred donors making a total count of 2516 students and faculty / staff which is a record in history of UPES as we have broken our own record on 2509 participation in 2017.
