Project Management

Inadditiontoproductionandassemblyof“stand-alone”RFcommunicationsystems,IASofferscompleteproj-ect management services. Our project managementpartnersareveryexperiencedinallfacetsof“turn-key”systemsimplementation.

A conventional system is fine forsmaller organizations, but mayoverload some channels whilenotutilizingother, openchannels.Conventional systems are afford-ableandcanbetheidealsolutiontomany systemneeds. However, operating a conventional systemis not always an efficient use ofspectrum.

Conventional

What is a System?

Private system owners may load 4-5timesmoresubscribersperchannelbyusingatrunkedsystem.

Trunked Trunking is the automatic sharing of repeaters in amultiplerepeatersystem.

The basis of operation is that individual subscribersactuallyusethesystemasmallpercentageofthetime,forshortperiods.Andalargenumberofusersdon’tusethesystematthesametime.Thisisthesametheoryforthepublictelephonesystem.

Conventional System(beforetrunking)

•Onechannelisbusywhileothersarenotbe- ingusedatall.Thisispooruseofspectrum andlimitsthecapabilityofthesystem.

Trunked System

• All channels are connected and calls are directed to open channels by a continuous exchangeofdatabetween the trunkingcon trollerandtheindividualsubscriberunits.

• In LTR® trunking, the repeater is held only for the duration of the transmission. A conversationofmanytransmissionsmaytake placeonseveralchannels.

• Called “transmissiontrunking”, LTR providesmaximum efficiency.Thetimebetweentrans-missions can be usedbyothers.

SYSTEMS FOR PEOPLE WHO MAKE SMART CHOICES 6

What is a System?

Other System Types Interconnect

Youcanmakeor receivea telephonecallwitha2-wayradio when the repeater has a telephone interconnectfeature, whichconnectsittothepublictelephonesystem.

During telephone interconnect operation, the PushToTalk button (PTT) must be pressed to speak andreleasedtolisten.Thisistermed“halfduplex”operation.

Dispatch Operation

“Dispatch” iswhenoneunitcallsall theotherunits ina group. It could be the actual dispatcher or anothermobileunit in thefield. This issometimescalled“onetomany.”

Despite cellular technology advances, dispatchoperation is best done by 2-way radio systems.Communicationisinstant,dependableandeconomical.

• All channels areutilized inLTR trunking.Other protocols requirea “control channel”, noavailablefornormaltranmissions. LTR is moreefficient.

IDAS™ TrunkingIDASisthebestchoiceofprofessionaldigitaltwo-wayradiosavailabletoday.IDASisacommunicationsplat-formthatwillgrowwithyourcompanyintothefuture.

Greater audio quality, enhanced security, integrateddataareallinherentinIDAS,whichisavailablenowinconventionalmode for systemsorwith IDAS trunkingwhere radiousersfind ithard togainaccess tobusychannels. IDAS trunkingmakes themostof the radiospectrumyouhave.

IDAS takes the ideaof radio spectrumefficiencyonestepfurther.ItsurpassestheFCCcurrentmandatetogotonarrowbandvoicechannelsbyleapfroggingthe12.5kHztargetandgoingdirectlyto6.25kHzchannels.ThisalignswiththeFCC’svisionofgettingthe6.25kHzinthenearfuture.

IDAS trunking is similar in approach to other populartrunking methods. IDAS uses in-band control mes-sages, but instead of sub-audible tones, IDAS usesdigital controlmessages in the packet. IDAS trunkinghas more capacity than other means, and the bigadvantage of automatic switchover to a secondaryhomechannelintheeventtheprimaryfails.

Types of Systems

Despite the differences, an analog LTR® system canhave a smooth migration to IDAS trunking since thesubscriberradio(handheldormobile)canunderstandbothprotocols and can scan between the two. Of course, sincescanningrequirescheckingnumerouschannels, careshouldbe takenas thesystemscales insizesoun-duedecodingdelayisnotexperienced.

Another featureof IDAS trunking is thecontroller isamodulethat is insertedintotherepeaterchassis.Thissaves rack space in the communications room, andsimplifiesset-up.

IDAS Multi-SiteAn IDAS conventional IP network can extend yourcommunciationcoverage. It letsyouconnectup to16dispersedsitesandallowsyou tocommunicate likeasinglesite. In thenear future, IDASmutli-site trunkingwillbeavailable.

P25 TrunkingTheneedforinteroperabilityiswellknownintheLandMobileRadio(LMR)industry.Onemeansofimplement-ing interoperability is theCommonAir Interface (CAI)definedbytheP25standardthatallowshandsetsfrommultiple agencies to communicate in the same area.Interoperability however is a much larger issue thansimply having fire and police staff communicatingbetween theirhandsetsat thesame incidencescene.Thattypeofinteroperabilitycurrentlyonlyexistsinthetelephonenetwork.

A second technology being used to achieve interop-erability is IP (InternetProtocol). IP technologyallowsmultiple communications devices (telephone, LMRradio, andcellphone,PC) tobe interconnectedsincethey are all communicating in the common format ofalldigital IPpackets.Voiceover IP (VoIP) is themostfamiliar formof this typeofcommunicationallowingastandards telephone to talk toaPCbased telephone. That same technology is now being used in LMRnetworkstoachievetrueinteroperability.
