“Wall of Shame” The past couple of weeks there have been some angry emails sent out due to the list of names that were posted in the club and on the dock notice boards. I would like to take a few minutes to explain to our members what happened. In my July article, I mentioned that we had a number of people that did not have the required insurance documentation on file for their slips. The Board decided to send out letters to these people so we could get their information into the club because of insurance issues. Prior to the letters being sent out, our Dock Master Nigel Veater, asked if he could have an additional two weeks to call members on the list personally. After the two weeks passed, another audit was done and there were still 26 members that were out of compliance. The Board decided previously to post the names of any member whose name was on the list after the second audit was completed. The problem was that some people had sent in their information at the same time the letters were being sent out and other people were on vacation during the two week period so they felt that their names should not have been posted on what was being called “The Wall of Shame”. I want to personally apologize to those people. We should have waited an additional week after the letters went out before posting names, however, in less than one week the list went from 26 people down to 4 so it seems that posting got results. In the future we will also be posting names of people that owe money to the club. At the time I am writing this article, we have 16 people that have outstanding bills. Our Administrative Assistant has told me that she has sent out bills repeatedly and no one is sending in their money. Going forward after members have been contacted at least two times with either a bill or a letter their names will be posted on the event and dock notice boards for all to see. The BOG is hoping that this will get everyone to pay their bills on time. The summer is almost halfway over but there are still so many events scheduled to take place before we put our boats to rest for the long winter season. This past weekend I had the pleasure to attend both the NERYC Invitational Sailing Regatta Party and the Donzi “Thunder on the Bay” opening party hosted by fellow NERYC member Woody Jackson at the Nauti Goose Restaurant & Marina.. NERYC members, both power boaters and sailors made their presence known at both of these events, and for the first time ever, NERYC was not just a stop on the “poker run” but the first stop, giving us a lot of exposure to Chesapeake Bay boaters outside of our own club. We also hosted the wedding of IPC Budd Neff of the Outcast YC who had over 150 people attend his reception, many of whom were OYC members who have close ties with many of our NERYC members. As their wedding wound down, our after race party was kicking into full gear, with DJ Bob Cross entertaining at both events. There were cars parked on the picnic grounds and up the hill on King St. as our lot was busting at the gills. Some members may have looked at this as an inconvenience, but personally, I feel that this represents the ongoing momentum we are beginning to experience as a premier destination on the Upper Bay! We ended this past weekend on John Sheldrake’s Foxy Lady with a “Full Moon” celebration hosted by both the Hakemian/Brawleys and the Sheldrake/Hubers. I am now in need of a weekend to recuperate from my weekend!

The rest of the summer appears to hold more of the same by way of boating and social events at NERYC. This weekend, we set out to Crescent YC for another wonderful fleet cruise hosted by FC Roger & Linda Hughes and ably assisted by AFC Robert & Regina Leigh. The following weekend, we have our annual cardboard dinghy race/dog show and member’s picnic and NERYC’s marketing committee will be hosting an open house as well. RC Jon Fowler is planning a Hawaiian Luau and Pig Roast at the end of August, then the Annual Labor Day Cruise and Commodore‘s Cocktail Party will take place in Annapolis. The fall series of NERYC’s sailing season will commence and the small boat racing will continue on Thursday evenings. All of these events leave little time or energy to work but I, like most of you, will continue to bear it as someone’s ‘gotta’ do it.

After another month of all this activity, I will be ready for my vacation. Kenny and I plan to visit Italy and Greece in early September. We will spend a week on the Amalfi Coast of southern Italy and then board a ferry for Corfu, Greece where we will meet our crew and sail around the Ioanian Islands aboard the SV Sensation, a 5o foot Privilege catamaran. Once we get back and are well rested, we will once again join our NERYC buddies, and pick up where we left off with the Frostbite Cruise, land cruise to the Annapolis Sail & Power boat shows, monthly Birthday nights with DJ Bob Cross and the NERYC Karaoke Krooners and watch the remainder of the fall series races. Right after fall work day, I plan to spend my last week as Vice Commodore at Disney World in Florida with my 2 grandsons and my 3 children and daughter in law, mentally preparing myself for an exciting year as your Commodore. I am anxiously awaiting heading up this fabulous club with the most phenomenal group of people on the Bay. We have surely turned the corner and our future holds nothing but growth and more fantastic times with people I am proud to say are my family.

It’s easy to join the team! You can log on to the web site www.relaybythebay.org and follow the di-rections. (At the home page, click “sign up”. Check “join a team” and type in Cruising For A Cure.) We have another basket raffle as a fundraiser for this year. It’s on display at the club and is filled with an array of great items and valued at over $700. Tickets are- 5 for $20.00 - The winning ticket will be drawn on September 21, 2007. The winner does not need to be present. August is coming up with a blow out assortment of activities for everyone to enjoy and participate. If you haven’t looked for awhile, take another look at the club calendar and see how busy this club is. For instance, the Sail program has two out of town races, the Governor’s Cup race and the GRF Bay Jam Race and later in the month will be the start of the local Fall Race Series. The Fleet Captain also has a busy agenda with a summer cruise to Crescent Yacht Club early in the month. This is then followed several weeks later with a cruise on Labor Day weekend to Annapolis. Not to be outdone, a full set of activities has also been put together at your clubhouse. We have Birthday Night (Aug. 10) with DJ Robert Cross, a Board of Governors meeting (Aug. 17), a Cardboard Boat Race / Dog Show (Aug.11) and a Hawaiian Luau (Aug. 25). I can’t think of a better day on the bay than to show up early, go boating and later enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow Yacht Club members in the evening. In past years we had a Crab Feast and Auction as noted on the calendar for late August. However, I have changed this event to a Hawaiian Luau accompanied with steel drum music. Since there will not be an auction, a small part of the ticket price will go toward the Commodores Ball Fund. We hope that everyone can attend and enjoy the last big social party prior to the November Commodores Ball. On July 13th, we had another one of our famous Birthday/Anniversary/New Member nights. As you know by now, the club is still experimenting with crowd control and seating. This time the DJ was located upstairs in the main dining room where the music could be heard while the members dined and conversed. A good crowd showed up and turned out to be a very successful evening. Miscellaneous: There is nothing wrong with slip holders having work done on their boats by outside contractors. But we do require all contractors to have on file at the club a certificate of insurance document when working on our boats. Please tell your contractor to re-submit an up to date copy of their policy to Linda at the Club office. At this time, only one contractor (Walden Rigging) is in compliance. Roster update: All new members have been entered into the database and an updated membership roster has been distributed by e-mail. RC Jon Fowler

I am again thanking the waterfront volunteers that offer their time as OOD’s and all the other work that goes on behind the scenes that most of us are very unaware of.

Most of my life was spent coaching high school basketball in Indiana and college ball at the University of Arkansas. Watching young people in the classroom and on the court has definitely made me an advocate for the work that goes on with our young people

Rick Hanson has taken on the responsibility of the Junior Sailing Program for our club. For the past several years NERYC under Rick’s direction has offered a sail camp for the children and grandchildren of our members, as well as non-members. This year three of our young sailors were able to achieve their Instructor Certification through the US Sailing organization. This, together with our growing fleet of sailing dinghies, can only continue to grow the program.

The club also was able to provide a great experience for some young men and there parents from Troop 400 of Cincinnati, Ohio. As an ex cub scout, boy scout and explorer I was also very proud that we could provide sailing instruction for this large group. I am sure that the few days spent in North East will provide positive and wondrous memories for the folk from the mid-west. This article does not have the space to tell it all, so catch Rick and hear “The rest of the Story”.

We have twenty six guests and twelve boats listed for the cruise to the Crescent Yacht Club on August 4th and 5th, three sail and nine powerboats. I will be departing on Friday at 11 am and anchoring out about half way to Middle River. Any sail or power interested in doing the same please contact me to coordinate the departure times and anchor location. Just in case there are not any floating signs giving directions to the Crescent Yacht Club the lat Long coordinates are: 39 18 16.73 N, 076 25 05.64 W. The Labor Day Weekend Cruise to Annapolis is on August 31 to Sept. 3rd, and it is traditional for the Commodore to host a cocktail party at this event. The party is open to all club members. Even if you are not attending by boat, we invite you to drive down for the occasion. See flyer for details.

Finally, good luck to all our sailors who will miss the next cruise, because they are representing NERYC in the 2007 Governor’s Cup Race from Annapolis to St Mary’s City on August 3rd.

Roger Hughes Fleet Captain

FROM THE FLEET

For the members who could not make it down to Great Oaks for our mid-summer cruise, you missed one heck of a party. We had 57 members and guests on 20 boats that shared in the festivities on the beach. The Fleet Captain's locker returned to S/V Traveleighing empty. Five boats anchored out in Fairlee Creek with the other 15 in slips. The level of camaraderie dis-played between members no matter if they were power or sail in assisting in docking and ensuring that as venues changed all stayed informed was heart warming. We had a number of 1st time cruisers with either new or new to them boats exercising their navigation and docking skills in an unfamiliar marina.

The festivities centered on appetizers brought by the members and adult liquid refreshments provided out of the Fleet Captains Locker. Each boat crew offered up a volunteer to represent them in a competition which simulated the skill needed to throw a life ring to an overboard crewmember. It became very appar-ent that the majority of the crews need to ensure that they don't fall off the vessel. The winners of the com-petition were Dave Andrews in 1st place, Mark Coffman in 2nd place and Barry Lotter in third place. See you on the next cruise.

The weather is commonly considered to be the least predictable aspect of any plan, so when the Sail Race Committee started planning our Invitational Regatta months ago, we knew weather could be an issue. During my professional career (while I had a real job, as the girls refer to my life before I became a consultant), I dealt with the challenges presented by the planning of complex tasks almost on a daily basis and I like to think that I adopted a fairly simple, yet proven approach. When you create a detailed plan of all the activities, you communicate every activity with everyone involved, you determine the critical path and when you perform a PDA (Potential Deviation Analysis) on all the critical activities, few things can go terribly wrong.

During the PDA of the “what if there is no wind” question, we concluded that short of serving a massive free breakfast of broccoli and baked beans, there was not much we could do. We also knew that when you organize anything involving sailors, the party is the one thing that compensates for all the other misgivings. It makes the loser-blues go away in minutes and foes on the water become friends over a beer. So when the race was called after drifting, swimming and waiting for three hours, we knew that events scheduled back at the club, would have to compensate and it most certainly did. It also meant that there were no losers this time. More than two hundred people showed up at the club and hundred and forty-nine had dinner with us. The end of the story is that the event that never was, generated more than $6,000 in revenue for the club. That is not including income from the bar and as we all know, that could potentially double the figures.

Special thanks to our sponsors and their representatives: John Fallon of Tidewater Marine Outfitters; Bruce Taylor of Whitford Land Transfer, Jay Patel of Northeast Liquors; Dobbs and Suzanne Fryberger of Walden Rigging; Sew Nautical. Without their generous contribution we would not have been able to make the much needed investment in the event during the planning phase. It also means that we already have at least eighteen beautiful trophies, fully engraved for next year’s event. Another spontaneous sponsor came in the unlikely form of one of my crew members. Garth and Sue Hitchens are long standing friends from the Lake Deneys Yacht Club days, where Lyla and I started racing seriously about 33 years ago. They are also the owners of Annapolis Yacht Sales (Beneteau, Wauquiez and Sabre Dealer) and were so impressed with the quality of our event that they immediately wrote a fairly substantial check to help cover the cost.

Sail Racing at NERYC is not just supported by the sailboat owners, but many powerboat owners crew on race boats and thoroughly enjoy it. The race management function is almost entirely hosted by power boat owners and we are extremely grateful for this. The Race Committee for the Invitational was hosted on board LUCKY SEVEN the luxurious Silverton Power Yacht of Rocco and Judy D'Armiento. The VIP/Press and Sponsors Boat was FOXY LADY John Sheldrake's Stately Carver 52 power yacht and Doug Cain in his (no not BAD BOY) Parker power boat was the official

FROM THE RACE COURSE

NERYC Jr. Sail Program successfully completed their fourth annual sail clinic with quite a few changes that left the camp looking more professional than ever. Upon completing the tough US Sailing Small Boat Instructor certification course over Memorial Day weekend, Kyle Hanson, Bryan Whittington, and myself were more than ready to take the camp into our own hands and run the show. With over 25 years of combined sailing experience between us, we were more than happy to share our knowledge and passion for sailing with our eighteen eager campers. Aside from the classroom talks and ‘very old’ sailing videos, land and water drills aided our ‘hands on’ teaching approach, which gave each camper the opportunity to really engage in the sport. Following the NERYC sail camp, we had the pleasure of hosting thirty six boy scouts and parents from Cincinnati, Ohio. With only three days instead of four, and with such a large group to teach, the instructors were hard pressed and had to step up their game. It was tough to get everyone ready to sail and out on the water in such a short time, but we are proud to say that by the third day, their skills were so improved that they were all out and racing! The Jr. Sailors would like to thank everyone who helped with the camps, especially Brad Eckman who acted as a fourth instructor and was there from start to finish, Greg Eckman for his expert advice on race tactics, the Jr. Sailor parents (way too many to mention) who always pitch in to assist with catering etc. and last but not least, Rick Hanson for always being an example to follow!

We hope to see all of your children, and more next summer!

FROM THE DOCKS

On April 20th Barry & Jenn Lotter, Gill Louw and myself represented NERYC in the Eastport Yacht Club’s 27th Annual Solomon’s Island Invitational Race. At around 7pm, 140 boats gathered at the start opposite the Naval Academy in Annapolis. A moderate and steady NE breeze, which remained solid throughout the night, allowed the racers to hoist their spinnakers at the start and fly them all the way to the finish, making this year a truly great racing experience. Lottery and her intrepid crew took on a highly competitive Beneteau 36.7 one design fleet to place fifth overall. After a glorious 45 mile romp down the Bay, with only 57 seconds separating the 3rd and 8th place finishers in our class, I think we showed that we can ‘bark with the big dogs” too.
