Commodore’s Message

Hi all, With Labor Day behind us, we are officially headed into the

Fall season. It was great to see all of the boats on the river this past weekend sailing in our annual Labor Day Regatta. Sally Post unveiled a perpetual trophy honoring her late husband, George, who served as regatta chair for this regatta for many years. Marvin Day was this year’s recipient after selflessly dropping everything to assist a fellow competitor who had capsized. Con-grats Marvin!

I cannot say enough about our volunteer program and all of the

people who choose to participate. After former hurricane “Hermine” passed through last Friday our General Manager, Mitch McGuigan, was able to pull together a dozen volunteers on very short notice. They spent most of Saturday making the club look like nothing had happened. That enabled another team of volunteers led by David Roos, Jim Thomas and Marilyn Marino to order up some great weather and put together a great event on Sunday and Monday. We will be looking for ways to expand the program in the near future.

The weather is beautiful and the pool will be open all month so

come and enjoy your club John Potter Commodore

General Manager’s Message: Mitch McGuigan The high heat and humidity are finally gone and we can enjoy the wonderful fall weather. I hope that many

members will enjoy the great line-up of fall events. I encourage you to mark your calendar with the Annual Gen-eral Meeting on October 27, the Change of Watch Party on November 12 and the Holiday Party on December 11.

Based on the great success of the Wine Tasting event held in the spring, we will hold a second tasting on No-

vember 16. We are limited to 50 guests, so sign up right away when the official invitation is sent out. To give everyone a fair chance, we will not accept reservations until then.

Steak Night

We can comfortably seat and feed 75 only people. Reservations will be accepted for the first 75 who sign up. We cannot take reservations at the door.

The online sign-up or email reservation will be closed Monday, September 12 at 5:00pm or before if we reach 75 guests.

We prefer you use the following link to sign up. Steak Night. Note: you can use your credit card even if you do not have a PayPal account. Paypal will acknowledge your reservation.

Volunteer Work Days

The Board has approved quite a few projects that will enhance the club. Below is a partial list. I encourage members to come out and help. We provide a great lunch. Look for an email outlining dates and details.

Replace damaged siding on the sail shed and clubhouse Replace lighting in the sail shed and workshop. Renovate the kitchen Repair the docks Improve landscaping Paint the clubhouse porch and trim Sunset Friday Favorites There has been some interest in recipe sharing from some of our members for the great appetizers that show up at Sunset Friday. If you have a favorite you would like to share, please email it to the club and we’ll include the recipes in the upcoming Bow Watch publications. I look forward to seeing you at the club. Mitch

Fall Series 2016 Sailing Instructions

12. Finish Position Each competitor shall try to record the “Boat Ahead” and “Boat Behind” of them AS WELL AS THEIR OWN TIME OF FINISH.

This will be used to alleviate any discrepancy in finish position and aid scoring. These records shall be delivered to the BYSC PHRF Class Captain for scoring purposes.

13. Time Limit The time limit for each race on COURSE A/B will be 2 hours. Boats that do not finish within the 2 hour time limit will be scored DNF. The time limit for COURSE C will be 3 1/2 hours. Boats that do not finish within the time limit will be scored DNF. 14. Protests Protests are discouraged, but shall be delivered to BYSC PHRF Class Captain within thirty (30) minutes after the last boat finishes. All parties involved will be notified ASAP. Hearings will be held as soon as possible after a racing

committee can be mustered. This may not be on the same day – depending on CC’s availability. 15. Scoring A minimum of six races are scheduled in the Series. There will be one “throw-out”. One race constitutes a series. The Low Point Scor-

ing System will be used. Ties will be broken in accordance with The Racing Rules of Sailing for the first 4 places. 16. Engine Use A boat may only start and/or use their engines… In an emergency situation…to protect craft or personnel from injury. That boat’s captain will notify the Class Captain and the rest of

the racing fleet, via radio channel 72 that they had started their engine. There will be a 2 (two) point penalty added to their score. If a craft uses their engine to recover from grounding, or other “non-emergency” situations or is deemed to have gained a “significant advantage” that competitor will retire from that race.

On Course “C” to pass through the bridge. Undue acceleration through the bridge will be deemed to be ungentlemanly and skippers

should refrain from this con-duct.

NOTICE OF RACE THE DATAW ISLAND CUP – October 29, 2016

Sponsored by the Dataw Island Yacht Club RULES: The race will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing. A life jacket is re-

quired to be on board for each sailor. All participating boats must have at least two people on board during the race.

manual that are at least 18’ LOA. Spinnakers will be allowed in this race. REGISTRATION: Boats may register in advance by using the Registration Form that accompanies the No-

tice of Race and sending it to Roy Crocker, 1013 Curisha Point North, Saint Helena Island, SC 29920 or by E-mail to [email protected]. Registration will also be available at the Skippers Meeting on Dataw Island on Fri-day, October 28.

COST: The fee is $30 per boat if entered by October 19. For boats entering after October 19 the entry fee is

$35. SCHEDULE: Friday, October 28 – Skippers Meeting at the Gazebo at Dataw Island Marina at 6:00 PM. Q&A, Sailing In-

structions and registration. Informal cocktail party - provide your own beverages, appetizers welcome. Saturday, October 29 – Warning gun for start of race planned for 11:30 AM - depending on conditions this

time could be changed slightly. Dinner and awards at 6:00 PM at the Gazebo on Dataw Island. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS and NOTICE of RACE: Sailing Instructions and Notice of Race will be available

at the Skippers Meeting and on the racecourse. THE RACECOURSE: The plan is for the race will start in the area of Green “201” in the Coosaw River (just

east of the Brickyards) and proceed down the Coosaw River to St. Helena Sound. Boats will round Green “11” in St. Helena Sound and sail up the Morgan River to finish at Dataw Island Marina. Total distance is about 22 miles. Low tide is at about 2:24 PM in St Helena Sound; this means that, for the most part, boats will have a fa-vorable current both heading down the Coosaw River and up the Morgan River.

Depending on conditions the Race Committee may change or shorten the planned racecourse. If there is a course change the change will be announced at the Skippers Meeting and/or on the water.

SCORING: The fleet will be divided into two classes based on PHRF ratings with the lower rated boats in one

class (A), and the higher rated boats in the other class (B). Places will be awarded to each class. The intent is to have more similarity in ratings among boats sailing with each other. The makeup of the classes will depend on the number of boats and the range of PHRF ratings of the boats entering the race. Boats will be started in groups based on their PHRF rating with the higher rated boats starting earlier. Individual times will be kept for all boats and the corrected times will be used to determine the order of finish.

PRIZES: Keeper prizes will be presented to the top finishing boats in both Classes A and B depending on the number of entrees. The boat with the lowest corrected time from both classes combined will be the winner of the Dataw Island Cup. There will be a keeper trophy for the winner of the Cup, and the Dataw Island Cup with the winners name on it will be permanently displayed in the Yacht Club Room at the Community Center at Dataw Island.

DOCKING: There is ample space to dock at Dataw Marina for visiting boats,

www.Datawmarina.com. The Dataw Island Yacht Club www.Datawyachtclub.com will pay docking fees for participating boats the night of the race.

Dan Stover’s trip to Edisto Island Yacht Club There’s a new opportunity for club members thanks to the efforts of our Club Manager. One of the great

things about being a yacht Club member is the ability to visit other yacht clubs near and far. BYSC has en-tered into an informal reciprocity agreement with the Edisto Island Yacht Club located on Big Bay Creek at the southern tip of Edisto Island. This is a very nice “informal” club located a reasonable day sail offshore or about a six hour trip via the ICW and St Helena Sound. It is about 39 NM from the BYSC via the offshore route and about 30 NM via the ICW (if you are able to take the short cut based on the tides).

Check your charts very carefully as there is a lot of thin water at the mouth of St. Helena Sound between

Harbor Island/Hunting Island to the Southwest and Edisto Island to the Northeast. You may have to either go a few miles out and back into Edisto or thread your way through some shallow passages to get over to Big Bay Creek. Make sure your charts are up to date and be careful if you decide to take the short cuts. I didn’t try the short cut since it was dead low tide when I left the Edisto Yacht Club.

The entrance to Big Bay Creek is deep as is the creek itself. The Edisto Island Yacht Club is about 1 mile

up the creek on your starboard side past the Edisto Island Marina. There is an 80 foot T-head floating dock parallel to the river making it easy to tie up. To the shore side of the dock there is a large, elevated covered deck and on shore an attractive white Clubhouse overlooking the creek. Like our club, there is no signage in-dicating it is a yacht club but you might see their burgee flying (blue and red) and an American Flag. There is no electricity at the dock but there is fresh water.

The club itself is comfortable with a full tended bar as well as a large dining area. They serve meals there

and the fresh flounder I had was excellent and at a very reasonable price. They also have specials on certain days. Dress is casual for even Sunday dinner (shorts are fine but I don’t think I’d go in a swimming suit.) You’d be way out of place in a tie at this club, which is the way I like it. Everyone was quite pleasant and welcoming as I know our club members will be if they come to visit us.

It is about a ½ mile walk directly across the island to Edisto Beach. If you keep your eyes open you may

find a handful of small (very small) shark’s teeth along the beach. There are other restaurants within reasona-ble walking distance. I didn’t ask if there are taxi’s available on the island but you can check when you call the club if you decide to visit. To arrange your visit call Charlie Vincent, the Edisto Island Yacht Club manag-er at 843-869-4189. Their website is http://www.edistoislandyachtclub.com. I know I’ll sail back there soon . Marshmellow has been a well maintained boat throughout her years and is in great shape outside of some scratches on the hull from the mooring ball. In the three years that we have owned her, we have kept that tradition alive. Upgrades include: Raymarine chart plotter 2014, new Ulman mainsail 2015, new Ulman roller furling 135% jib 2015 and added new stainless steel exhaust in 2016. She has served us well in club racing consistently finishing in the top three at our club rac-es. She has also been great for overnight trips. As our horizons have expanded, so have our boat dreams.
