YouTube clip of the cars powered by Rolls Royce Merlin motors. Imagine the sound of that passing by. Then there is the sight and sound of the 48 cylinder Kawasaki motorcycle. 48 cylinders, 4,200cc, made from Kawasaki S1 250 motors and Jaguar distributors. Anyway I am now starting to freeze, if I hang about much longer I will be frozen solid just like an Alaskan wood frog…amazing little creatures, wood frogs. I used feel a bit like a wood frog when I get to work on those frosty early mornings we had last year. Thankfully this year has been a bit warmer. We recently had a social ride out to watch the sunset from the Bach around in Island Bay. It wasn’t too cold, well not compared to a winter morning ride, or our computer room. It was just a bit breezy around some of the bays, though. About 18 of us went on the ride with another 10 joining us for the meal.

Not that we saw the sun go down over the horizon. It was clear and sunny enough, it’s just that the sun goes down behind Red Rocks at this time of the year. We should have Googled it, but not to worry, it was a really enjoyable social occasion anyway.

Camp Mother, aka Colleen, is taking names of those interested in doing our Hanmer Springs trip in January. Accommodation is limited this year, although the camp will be letting us know of any cancellations, so get in quick, as this is a ride that is usually well subscribed. Hopefully she will hear me banging on the door and I can be let out now - I have done more than my 800 words.

Ride safe

Jimbo

RIDER PROFILE Warwick Austen Ulysses # 7181 Current Rides Coordinator. Ed:How long have you been riding bikes? Ans:I started riding in my teens, however, a serious head injuy following an off when an 18 year old, meant bikes were ruled off my agenda by my parents. Next bought a bike 16 years later to use as a commuter for a temp job, selling it around 12 months later when the commute was finished. Returned to motorcycling 20 years after that, out of an interest in riding again, that was almost 8 years ago!Ed: What bikes have you owned? Ans:In my teens, started with a step-thru Honda 50 then a Francis Barnett 125,Kawasaki 100 trail bike and an Ariel Arrow 250. The latter caused the head injury. The commuter bike was a Honda 250 twin.

My more recent bikes since resuming riding in 2006 have been a Hyosung 650GT, Susuki SV 1000, Susuki DR 650 and my much loved and current bike, a Honda VRF800. Ed: If money were no object, what would be your dream bike Ans: My thoughts of owning a fast Ducati sport bike or a Goldwing or a ST1300 have long been overtaken by the practicalities of having a bike that I can handle safely and store in my garage, so I don’t think I would go past the VFR, it has the sports feel I enjoy, and a touring capability which I have been doing lots of, especially since retiring. Ed: What type of riding do you prefer Ans: I do like riding on my own and in groups. As Rides/ Run Coordinatorover the past year, I’ve enjoyed gaining experience in leading large groups as well. Ed: What attracted you to Ulysses Ans: It seemed a great idea to join a group to meet other riders, improve my riding skills, and have others to ride with. All this has been realised and more! Ed: Your most memorable ride? Ans: My most memorable rides have been long ones, over several days. The most recent was the trip to Invercargill, down the West coast which included side trips, and back through the East coast and centre, 3100K in all over 9 days. Loved it all! One other question comes to mind How long will I keep on riding? Not sure of the answer to this, though hopefully up to 5 more years or so. I am well aware of the heightened risks as one gets older. Warwick # 7181

Editor: There is an unprecedented rumour that Warwick has a new bike? Exactly the same as the old bike?? How could this be???

Good afternoon. Well it seems that, despite the drizzle around the Wellington area, the MetService did get the forecast pretty well spot on for the  Wairarapa - sunny, mild conditions.

Page 7: COMMITTEE 2014 · 2020. 8. 13. · AUG/SEP ISSUE 84 Wellington@ulysses.org.nz Wellington.sec@ulysses.org.nz COMMITTEE 2014 CO-ORDINATOR: Jim Furneaux 971-2893 021-2442091 furneaux@paradise.net.nz

The eight of us had a mix of wet and dry roads, diesel on the Rimutakas, cow poop, and a few slippery shady spots on the back roads.

Coffee and a muffin at Martinborough then through to Wainuioru.

All was going very well until Bernie decided to try an adventure ride into a ditch (to be fair, he was avoiding an oncoming car on the very narrow Lees Pakaraka Road). He's feeling a bit sore, and is now getting his ribs checked out at the After-hours Emergency Centre. The Beemer fared well - just a few scratches and twisted controls. He was able to ride back to Wellington.

Many thanks to the group for the company, and for getting Bernie back up on his way again so smartly.

Regards

Ross
