When the NBA Community Assist Award is given, recipients receive a plaque with the inscription, “Following the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson, who improved the community piece by piece.”

While you are certainly well known for your NBA career, your philanthropy and dedication to giving to society are also noteworthy.

In your first six seasons in the NBA, you won Rookie of the Year, MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards, in addition to a rebounding title, a scoring crown, six All-Star bids, three selections to the All-NBA First Team and three selections to the All-Defensive First Team. You posted career averages of 21.1 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks and you were part of two NBA title teams – the second title coming in your final season – to stake your claim as one of the NBA’s greatest legends.

You are a two-time Olympic Gold Medal winner, a two-time Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee (one for your individual career, and one as a member of the 1992 US men’s Olympic basketball team) and a two-time Olympic Hall of Fame inductee (both individually and as a member of the 1992 team). You even have a video game named for you – following your 1989-90 season, Sega produced a game titled David Robinson’s Supreme Court, a 16-bit cartridge game for the Sega Genesis.

You were born in Key West, Florida, although because your father was in the Navy, your family moved many times until, following your father’s retirement, you and your family settled in Woodbridge, Virginia. There, you excelled in school and in most sports, except, ironically enough, basketball.

However, by your senior year you had reached 6 feet, 6 inches, and the high school coach added you to the basketball team. There, you earned all-area and all-district honors. You chose to go to the United States Naval Academy, where you majored in mathematics.

In your final two years at the Academy, you were a consensus All-American and won college basketball’s two most prestigious player awards, the Naismith and Wooden Awards, as a Naval Academy first classman (senior).

You were selected by the San Antonio Spurs as the number one draft pick in 1987, although because of your commitments to the Navy, you put off your rookie season until 1989. The rest is legendary.

But philanthropy has always been where your heart is. In 1991, you visited the 5th-grade class at Gates Elementary School in Texas and challenged the class to finish high school, promising each of them a $2,000 scholarship if they did. When 50 of those students graduated, you gave each of them an $8,000 scholarship.

In 2001, you donated your own money and founded the Carver Academy in San Antonio, a non-profit private school named for George Washington Carver to provide opportunities for inner-city children. In 2012, the school became a public charter school and its name changed to IDEA Carver.

In 2008 you partnered with Daniel Bassichis to form Admiral Capital Group, a private equity firm that invests in opportunities that provide both financial and social returns. Today its portfolio is worth more than $100 million. In addition, Admiral Capital Group also partnered with Living Cities to form the Admiral Center, a non-profit created to support other athletes and entertainers with their philanthropic initiatives. Today, Admiral Capital Group continues to fund and support worthy community endeavors.

You married Valerie Hoggatt in 1991, and are the proud father of three sons, David Jr., Corey, and Justin.

For your outstanding passion for excellence, community support and making a true social impact, the University of Charleston is honored to present the Doctor of Humane Letters degree, honoris causa to you, David “The Admiral” Robinson.
