Commander’s Corner
The weather caused us to cancel last week’s meeting, but we will meet again tonight, 2
March with both Seniors and Cadets. We will have a clean-up night next Monday, 9
March in preparation for our upcoming Subordinate Unit Inspection. We had a good
turnout at the XCOR Aerospace/CAF Museum activity on 21 April. We had about 35
people from 6 units in attendance.
Upcoming Events:
SLS - There is a Squadron Leadership School (SLS) in Lubbock scheduled for 21-22
March. This is a great opportunity for newer members to obtain the training they need
and to get a better understanding of Squadron level operations within CAP. It is one of
the requirements for completion of Level II in the Professional Development Program.
Wing Conference - The annual Texas Wing Conference is 15-19 April at the DFW
Airport Marriott South. The Texas Wing Conference page is
http://www.txwgcap.org/conference. There are pre-conference seminars and courses
that have already been announced. This is a great opportunity to attend a Region or
Wing level course.
Inspection - Midland Composite Squadron has a Subordinate Unit Inspection due by
April 30, 2015. We will begin working on this at tonight’s meeting. In the meantime,
Staff can go to the following link and download the worksheets for each section to be
inspected. The Unit Staff should review the appropriate worksheet and provide the
required documentation to be uploaded in e-services:

Recruiting – We have had some success recruiting new Senior members lately, but as
always, we need to continue to focus on recruiting Senior and Cadet Members. Please
always be talking up CAP. Also direct people to check out the following websites:

The Safety Beacon is for informational purposes. Simply reading the Beacon does not satisfy your monthly safety education requirements, but unit safety officers are encouraged to use the
articles in the Beacon as topics for their monthly safety briefings and discussions. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________
What’s in This Month’s Beacon?
- Announcement of the 2015 CAP National Safety Officer College
The Safety Officer College will be held June 1-5, 2015, at Kirtland AFB, NM. Check out the information at the bottom of this page, and the official announcement on page 2 of the Beacon.
- Mishaps that were closed out in December 2014
Take a look at the mishaps that were reviewed and closed out in December
For each of these mishaps, take the time to think about how the person might have gotten into that situation, how they might have gotten out of that situation, and whether or not you are at risk to have the same thing happen to you.
Any idea how some of these could be prevented? - Post-Mission Stress Management
We all feel stress in our everyday lives, and that stress can mount when we add our CAP missions and duties into the mix
Page 3 and 4 of the Beacon is a bi-fold handout how to deal with Post-Mission Stress, provided by our new CAP CISM Chief, Lt Col Tom Janisko.
For more CISM resources, check out the CAP CISM webpage at http://www.cism.cap.gov/index.html
2015 National Safety Officer College
The National Safety Officer College will be held this year at the Air Force Safety Center at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM, June 1-5. This is year’s curriculum will be totally new. Attendees will become experts in the theory and practical application of CAP’s new Safety Management System (see December 2014 Beacon). There will be presentations on how we in CAP can engineer a new safety culture. Learn how to conduct basic mishap reviews and effectively write-up the review. Study Risk Management and learn how to apply it at the Strategic, Operational, and Everyday levels. Learn how hazard assessment and risk mitigation will be worked into every process and program in CAP. This is your chance to be in on the ground floor as CAP transitions to a new safety system. Read more in the Beacon.

Spartan College unveils new drone program
By ROBERT EVATT World Business Writer
The Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology has offered all kinds of aviation education
and training, so it’s no surprise the school would step into the world of drones. But the college
plans to do something different with the cutting-edge category. On Monday, the college
announced it would soon offer classes focusing on the electronic systems of drones.
Ryan Goertzen, president of the Tulsa-based, for-profit aviation college, said Spartan will be
among the first in the nation to offer classes devoted to the inner workings of unmanned aircraft.
―We wanted to do something that’s out of the box and not tied to the traditional maintenance
and piloting realms,‖ he said.
The course will have students build a four-bladed, hovering quadracopter from basic parts,
including the assembly of motors, electronics and technical boards, Goertzen said. Other
portions of the course include FAA regulations, mission planning and control, payloads and
electronic data links. And yes, students will be able to keep their flying creations.
Though the course will focus on quadracopters, the skills students will learn will apply to all
kinds of drones, he said. ―We want to focus on the fundamental aspects of technical education,‖
he said. ―It doesn’t matter if it’s a quadracopter or a predator — the same types of skill sets are
required.‖
